The spread between the cheapest and the dearest handle of the same size runs to more than an order of magnitude, and the handle line is normally quoted supply-only alongside the cabinet job rather than sold on its own, so the number only means anything once we know the run, the number of fronts and the specification. Standard hole centres: 96, 128 and 160 mm

The measurement that decides whether a handle physically fits is the hole centre — the centre-to-centre distance between the two fixing screws. It is not the length of the handle. A 160 mm handle and a 230 mm handle can share the same 160 mm centres, because the ends overhang the screws.

96, 128 and 160 mm are genuine catalogued handle hole-centre (centre-to-centre) spacings, confirmed independently at Häfele and Hettich; 192 mm sits alongside them. Independently, hettich lists 96 / 128 / 160 / 192 mm together as the drill-hole-spacing options for one handle family.

But here is the thing most guides get wrong by omission, and it matters when you are trying to reuse existing holes: 96/128/160 are a recognised series, not the only spacings sold. The same Häfele catalogue page also lists 156, 177, 277, 306, 327, 356, 450, 477, 595, 632, 758 and 860 mm, none of which are multiples of 32.

On the 32 mm story. You will read that the spacings exist because of the 32 mm cabinet module. Half of that is documented and half is not, so here is the split. Documented: 32 mm is the documented base increment of cabinet construction (“System 32” / Blum “Process 32”) — used for hinge plates, drawer runners and shelf-pin rows. Arithmetically 96 = 3 × 32, 128 = 4 × 32, 160 = 5 × 32. Not documented: any manufacturer statement that handle hole centres were derived from that module. We searched for one and did not find it, and the same catalogue lists a dozen spacings that are not multiples of 32 at all. So treat the arithmetic as a handy memory aid, not an explanation.

On imperial sizes. Do not assume an imperial handle drops into metric holes. 3¾ inches is 3.75 × 25.4 = 95.25 mm, which is not 96 mm; 5 1/16 inches is 128.59 mm, which is not 128 mm. Those are close enough to look interchangeable in a catalogue and far enough apart to fight you at a 3 mm screw hole, especially across two fixings. We could not verify any manufacturer table that pairs the imperial and metric sizes as equivalents, so measure the actual centres rather than trusting a conversion.

Handleless designs and the cost impact

“Handleless” is not one thing, and the three routes to it cost very differently:

  • J-profile or C-channel. An aluminium profile runs along the top edge of the front and your fingers hook into it. There is no separate handle to buy, but the profile, the extra machining and the neat corner joints replace that cost. Whether it is cheaper than handles depends entirely on which handles you were comparing against.
  • Recessed grip rail. A continuous channel is built into the carcass between the drawer tiers. It gives the cleanest line and it is the most expensive route, because it changes the cabinet, not just the front.
  • Push-to-open. Mechanical or magnetic latches on ordinary doors and drawers. The hardware is modest, but you are adding a moving part to every front, and every one of those is something that can eventually fail or go out of adjustment. Drawers with any real weight in them are the ones that give trouble first.

Two honest cautions. First, handleless fronts get touched on the face, so a matte or textured finish that shows fingerprints will show them everywhere — this is the most common regret we hear. Two tests before you commit. Ask what the base metal is, not just the finish colour — “chrome” describes a coating, not a material. And pick up the sample: a solid stainless or brass handle has a weight that a plated zinc casting does not. Matching handle size to door and drawer size

There is no published standard that tells you what length of handle belongs on what width of front, and we are not going to invent a ratio and dress it up as a rule. What the catalogues do tell you is the shape of the answer: the same Häfele page that lists 96, 128 and 160 mm centres also lists centres running up to 860 mm. Those long ones exist for a reason — wide drawer fronts and full-height larder doors take long handles.

So the sizing logic that actually works in a Malaysian kitchen, stated as workshop practice rather than as a standard:

  • Scale with the front. A wide drawer wants a long handle, and one of the smaller centres on a 900 mm-wide pan drawer looks like an afterthought. Move up the catalogued series rather than stretching a small handle’s spacing.
  • Two handles beat one over-long one on very wide drawers — it also lets you pull the drawer square instead of racking it.
  • Match by hand, not by eye on a screen. Print the outline at full size and tape it to the front, or hold a sample against it. Photographs of handles are meaningless for scale.
  • Keep one centre distance across the run where you can. Fewer jig settings, fewer mistakes, and swapping handles later stays easy.
  • Grip clearance matters more than length. A handle that sits too close to the front leaves no room for fingers — check the projection, not just the centres.
  • Watch the traffic. In a galley or a narrow condo kitchen, protruding handles on the walkway side catch clothing. Edge pulls or a J-profile solve it without going fully handleless.

Drilling, jigs and why alignment goes wrong

Handle holes are unforgiving because the error is visible at eye level and cannot be filled invisibly on a laminated or foil-wrapped front. Almost every failure comes from one of five things:

  • Measuring from the wrong reference. Marking each front from its own edge means every front repeats its own manufacturing tolerance. Use a jig referenced consistently to the same edge of every front.
  • No jig at all. A drilling template or an adjustable handle jig is inexpensive and is the difference between 22 identical handles and 22 nearly identical ones.
  • Drilling from the back. Always drill from the face side with the front supported, or the drill blows out the decorative surface as it exits.
  • No backing. Clamp a scrap board behind the front. This is the single easiest way to stop chipping on melamine and laminate.
  • Wrong screw length. Screws that are too long push a bump through a thin front; too short and they only bite two threads. Check the front thickness first, and remember that a drawer box behind the front changes it.

If a hole does go wrong, be realistic about the fix. On a solid timber or painted front, a plug and a repaint is genuinely invisible. On a laminated, foil-wrapped or acrylic front it is not, and the front is usually replaced — which is a good reason to have the fabricator drill the holes in the workshop, before the fronts are finished and hung, whenever the handle choice is already settled.

Replacing handles on existing cabinets

This is the cheapest meaningful change you can make to a tired kitchen, and it is worth doing in the right order:

  1. Measure your existing hole centres first, before you look at any handles. Take the measurement centre-to-centre between the two screws, on several fronts, because older kitchens are not always consistent.
  2. Shop to that number. If your existing centres are 128 mm, a 128 mm replacement drops straight in with no drilling at all. Given how many spacings are catalogued, there is usually something in your size.
  3. If the centres do not match, you have three options: drill new holes (visible old holes unless they sit under the new handle’s footprint), fit a backplate handle that covers the old holes, or move to a longer handle whose fixings straddle them.
  4. Knob to bar is easy; bar to knob usually is not. A single-screw knob leaves one of the two old holes showing.
  5. Check the screw length against your fronts, and buy a few spare screws in a couple of lengths — supplied screws are frequently the wrong length for the front you actually have.
  6. Do one front first. Fit a single handle, live with it for a day, then do the rest.

While the fronts are off, it is the natural moment to check the hinges, because a sagging door is not fixed by a new handle. Where the cheap ones fail

Handles are not a place where cheap is automatically wrong — a plain, solid, well-made bar handle is inexpensive. The failures are specific and predictable:

  • Plated zinc alloy in a humid kitchen. The plating pits, then lifts, then the casting underneath corrodes. It is the most common complaint we hear about hardware in year three.
  • Hollow extrusions that flex. A thin-walled tube bends slightly every time a loaded drawer is pulled, and eventually the screws work loose.
  • Undersized screw threads. Cheap handles come with cheap screws whose heads round off on the first over-tightening.
  • Non-standard centres. A handle at an odd spacing is impossible to replace like-for-like when one gets damaged, which forces you to re-drill the whole kitchen.
  • Sharp cast edges. Poorly finished castings catch cloth and skin; you notice this every day, unlike the finish.
  • Coloured coatings on high-use fronts. Under-sink and bin drawers wear first, and a worn patch on one handle in a run is more obvious than uniform ageing.

Read that table as leverage rather than as a bill. On a 20-foot kitchen, a handle that costs twice as much is not a one-off decision — it is twice as much, about 22 times over. That cuts both ways, and it is why we would rather quote your real count than publish an average. It is also the argument for spending the money on the fronts you use most: there is nothing wrong with a plain, solid handle on the wall units and something better on the drawers your hands are actually on every day.
