IKEA Wardrobe vs Built-In Wardrobe
Cost, Fit & Installation in Malaysia (2026)

Planning a PAX wardrobe or thinking of a carpenter? What decides the real cost, and which suits your room.

Modular wardrobe in a condo bedroom with an empty gap between its top and the ceiling beam

An IKEA wardrobe such as PAX is a kit of frames, doors and fittings sold separately; a built-in wardrobe is measured, built and installed to your wall by a carpenter. PAX suits a square room with enough ceiling height, a tight budget, or a renter who wants to take the wardrobe along. Built-in suits rooms with beams, odd widths, a low ceiling or a damp wall. On ClickBina's guides a built-in wardrobe is RM180 – RM350 per foot run in melamine and a standard three-door wardrobe in melamine RM2,500 – RM4,500, installed (indicative 2026, Klang Valley).

The short answer: it depends on the room, not the brand

Most people searching for an IKEA wardrobe in Malaysia are really asking one question: is it cheaper than getting a carpenter to build one in? The honest answer is that it depends on the room. A modular wardrobe system is a set of fixed-size boxes. When the wall, the ceiling and the floor suit those boxes, the system is quick and good value. When they do not, every fix costs extra: a filler strip, a gap at the top, a beam the frame will not clear, a carpenter to make it fit.

A built-in wardrobe starts from the opposite end. Someone measures your actual wall, including the beam, the skirting, the socket and the ceiling line, draws a wardrobe for that space and builds it to size. You pay for that fit, and you lose the option of taking the wardrobe with you when you move.

This page compares the two routes the way a contractor would: what you actually buy, whether it fits, who installs it, how it copes with humidity and what the built-in route costs.

What you actually buy with a PAX wardrobe

IKEA sells PAX as a system, not as a finished wardrobe. On IKEA Malaysia's product pages the frame is sold on its own, and doors, hinges and interiors are sold separately. A complete wardrobe is therefore a shopping list: frames, doors, hinges, rails, shelves, drawers or baskets, handles and sometimes a sliding door track. The total on the planner screen is the total of that list. It does not include anyone to carry, assemble, level or fix it.

The frames come in a small set of sizes. IKEA Malaysia lists frames 50 cm and 100 cm wide, 58 cm deep, and 201 cm or 236 cm high, plus a shallow 35 cm deep frame. The frame board is listed as particleboard and fibreboard with a honeycomb paper filling, finished in foil and melamine with plastic edging. That is a sound, dimensionally accurate kit, and the hardware is consistent across the system.

What the kit does not include is responsibility for your room. If the frame does not suit the wall, that is a separate problem for you or your installer to solve.

Ceiling height, beams and the gap at the top

Height is where Malaysian rooms and modular wardrobes most often disagree. IKEA's own assembly notes say the 201 cm frame can be stood upright only if the ceiling is at least 202 cm, or 205 cm if you add a sliding door. For the 236 cm frame the figures are 237 cm and 240 cm. Measure the lowest point on the wardrobe wall, not the middle of the room.

Many Malaysian bedrooms are taller than both frames. ClickBina's plaster ceiling guide assumes a standard ceiling height of 9–10 ft slab to slab, so a PAX wardrobe usually leaves a strip of empty wall above it. That strip collects dust and looks unfinished unless someone builds a top box or filler to close it, which is carpentry on top of the kit.

Beams cause the opposite problem. A beam that crosses the wardrobe wall can sit lower than the frame, so the frame either does not fit under it or has to stop short. A built-in wardrobe simply steps down under the beam: the carpenter measures the beam and builds the top of the wardrobe around it. Condo bedrooms in particular rarely have square walls, as ClickBina's wardrobe pricing guide notes when it describes the site measure.

Module widths against a wall measured in feet

Built-in wardrobes in Malaysia are quoted per foot run, so the length of the wall sets the price. A PAX wardrobe is built from 50 cm and 100 cm frames, so you add boxes until you run out of wall. If the wall length is not a neat multiple of the frames, there is a gap at the end. Small gaps take a filler strip; bigger ones leave you choosing between a narrower wardrobe or a custom piece made to close it.

Depth matters too. The PAX frame is 58 cm deep, while ClickBina's wardrobe pricing guide gives a standard built-in depth of 22–24 inches (560–610 mm) for hanging space. Both need that depth for a side-to-side hanging rail. Where a small room cannot give it up, the shallow 35 cm frame or a built-in with a forward-facing rail is the answer; ClickBina's wardrobe door types guide explains how frame depth decides the rail direction.

Assembly, wall fixing and who installs it

IKEA's product page says two people are needed to assemble a PAX frame, and that the wardrobe must be fixed to the wall with the enclosed fastener because of the tipping hazard. It also says different wall materials need different fixing devices, sold separately. In practice that means drilling into brick, concrete or a partition with the right plug and screw, and checking for concealed wiring and pipes before drilling.

Most households hire someone for this. The installation fee for an IKEA wardrobe is a separate cost that depends on the number of frames, the doors and how much levelling and fitting the room needs, and it is the line most often left out when people compare a planner total with a contractor's quote. A built-in quote is normally an installed price.

A partition wall needs extra thought either way. A tall wardrobe fixed to a gypsum partition needs fixings made for that wall, or a support behind it, so ask your installer what they will fix into.

Particleboard in a humid Malaysian bedroom

Particleboard faced with melamine is not the weak material people sometimes assume. ClickBina's wardrobe pricing guide explains that the melamine face is effectively waterproof; the board fails where moisture reaches an unsealed edge, a drilled hole or damaged edge banding, and the core then swells. In a dry, air-conditioned bedroom that is rarely a problem, for a modular wardrobe or a built-in one.

The risk is the wall behind the wardrobe. An outside wall that gets wet in the rain, or a wall shared with a bathroom, can keep the back panel damp. The same guide notes that regular melamine will swell and delaminate within 2–3 years in humid conditions, which is why it recommends moisture-resistant plywood where damp is a real risk. With a built-in wardrobe you can choose that board; with a modular system you take the board the system supplies. ClickBina's mouldy wardrobe guide explains why back panels grow mould and why an air gap behind the wardrobe helps.

What the built-in route costs

The modular side cannot be priced from one table, because it is a basket of frames, doors, fittings and a separate installation charge, and IKEA's prices change. Price your own basket in the planner, then add delivery, installation, wall fixings and any filler or top box. The built-in side is published on ClickBina's wardrobe pricing guide (indicative 2026, Klang Valley, installed):

Compare installed with installed: the same wall width, the same door type, the same interior fittings, and on the modular side the installation, wall fixings and any filler or top box included. That single correction changes the answer for many rooms.

Middle routes that often work

  • PAX plus a carpenter's top box: the modular wardrobe up to frame height, with a built top cabinet or filler closing the gap to the ceiling.
  • Built-in carcass with branded hardware: a carpenter-built wardrobe that specifies soft-close hinges and good runners, so the hardware matches what a modular system offers.
  • Modular in the dry room, built-in on the damp wall: PAX in an air-conditioned bedroom with a sound inside wall; built-in MR plywood on an outside or bathroom wall.
  • Built-in shell, modular-style interior: a built-in body with rails, baskets and drawers chosen from a fittings range; ClickBina's wardrobe internal fittings guide covers the options.

Who should choose which

  • Renting, or moving within a few years: modular. You can take it with you; a built-in stays behind.
  • Square room, ceiling close to a frame height, inside wall: modular is genuinely good value.
  • Beam over the wall, odd width or bowed walls: built-in. The fixes for modular add up.
  • Tall ceiling and you want storage to the top: built-in, or modular with a carpenter's top box.
  • Outside wall or a wall shared with a bathroom: built-in in moisture-resistant board.
  • Landlord fitting out a unit to let: built-in, because it stays with the unit and suits tenants who arrive with no furniture.

Common Questions

Is an IKEA wardrobe cheaper than a built-in wardrobe in Malaysia?
On a square wall with a suitable ceiling height it often is. Once you add installation, wall fixings and fillers or a top box for a tall ceiling or a beam, the gap narrows. A built-in wardrobe in melamine is RM180–RM350 per foot run on ClickBina's guides, installed.
What ceiling height does a PAX wardrobe need?
IKEA says the 201 cm frame needs at least 202 cm of ceiling height to stand it upright, or 205 cm with sliding doors. The 236 cm frame needs 237 cm, or 240 cm with sliding doors.
Does an IKEA wardrobe have to be fixed to the wall?
Yes. IKEA's product page says the wardrobe must be fixed to the wall with the enclosed fastener, using screws and plugs that suit your wall.
Can a PAX wardrobe fit under a beam?
Only if the beam is higher than the frame plus the assembly clearance. A built-in wardrobe steps down around the beam instead.
Will an IKEA wardrobe survive Malaysian humidity?
In a dry, air-conditioned bedroom against an inside wall, usually yes. Against a damp outside or bathroom wall, a built-in in moisture-resistant plywood is the safer choice.
How deep is a PAX wardrobe compared with a built-in?
The PAX frame is 58 cm deep, with a 35 cm shallow frame. ClickBina's guides give a standard built-in depth of 22–24 inches (560–610 mm) for hanging space.
Can an IKEA PAX wardrobe be made to look like a fitted, built-in wardrobe?
Partly. A carpenter can add a top box or filler to close the gap to the ceiling and filler strips at the sides, so the wardrobe reads as fitted. It is still a modular frame inside, so it will not step around a beam the way a built-in wardrobe does.
What does a three-door built-in wardrobe cost?
On ClickBina's guides, RM2,500–RM4,500 in melamine and RM3,500–RM6,000 in MR plywood for an 8–10 ft wide wardrobe, installed (indicative 2026, Klang Valley).
