Concealed doors, jib doors and flush panels that disappear into a joinery wall — the hardware ratings that actually exist, the reveal tolerance that decides the result, and why we price the leaf at a measurement.

The single most useful thing to know before you buy one is that no hinge maker publishes a kilogram rating for an individual cabinet cup hinge. What a hidden door actually is

A hidden door — a jib door, a concealed door, a “secret” door in the estate-agent listing — is a door leaf finished so that it reads as part of the wall or the joinery around it rather than as a door. There is no architrave, no visible frame, no handle, and usually no lock face. When it is shut, the only evidence it exists is a line.

Two quite different jobs get called by the same name, and confusing them is how quotes go wrong:

  • Cabinetry-integrated. The leaf is a panel in a run of joinery — a wall of wardrobe fronts, a library wall, a TV feature wall — and one of those panels opens. The leaf is a cabinet component, sized and faced like its neighbours.
  • Architectural jib door. The leaf sits in a plastered wall and is finished flush with the plaster, painted the same colour, sometimes with a continuing skirting. Structurally this is a door in a wall, not a piece of furniture, and it is heavier.

The hardware ladder below runs from one to the other, and the correct rung depends on which of those two you are actually building. Most disappointment we are called in to fix comes from an architectural leaf hung on furniture hardware.

Where hidden doors make sense in a Malaysian home

Hidden doors earn their cost in four situations, and are decoration everywhere else.

A door that interrupts a joinery wall. This is the commonest and the most justified. A wardrobe wall or a TV feature wall runs to a store room, a bathroom or a utility passage, and a conventional door with an architrave slices the composition in half. Making that leaf match the panels either side is not vanity, it is what stops the wall looking accidental.

A store room or a service riser in a condo. Malaysian condo layouts put a lot of small utility doors in living space — store, DB box, water heater cupboard, riser access. A flush panel keeps the wall clean while leaving proper access.

A wet-kitchen or yard door in an open-plan terrace. Where the dry kitchen is the showpiece and the wet kitchen behind it is not, a flush door lets the visible side stay clean without hiding the working side behind a curtain.

An en-suite or dressing-room door in a master bedroom. Particularly where the bedroom already has a full wall of built-in wardrobe: the fourth door in a run of three wardrobe doors is the classic case, and the leaf has to match whichever of the wardrobe door types the rest of the run uses.

Where it does not make sense: a main entrance, a fire-rated door, anything that needs a proper lock set, or any door where an unfamiliar visitor has to find it in a hurry. A door nobody can see is a door nobody can find.

Pivot, concealed hinge and push-latch hardware

Three families of hardware do this job, and they are not interchangeable.

Concealed door hinges. Mortised into the edge of the leaf and into the frame, invisible when the door is shut, and rated in kilograms against a hinge count. This is the standard answer for a flush leaf in a normal opening.

Pivots. The leaf turns on a point rather than on an edge, which lets it be wider, taller and heavier than a hinged door, and lets it open both ways. Pivots also change the geometry: part of the leaf swings backwards past the frame line, so the reveal detail and the floor detail both change. FritsJurgens pivot hinges are fully mortised into the door and carry the range in the table below; note the minimum door thickness of 40 mm, rising to 50 mm for the M42+ variant. A 35 mm leaf is not a pivot door.

Push latches. With no handle, something has to hold the leaf shut and release it on a push. Magnetic and mechanical push latches both work; the thing to specify is that the latch is rated for the leaf weight and that it is adjustable, because a flush leaf that pops proud by two millimetres has failed even though it is technically closed. On a heavy leaf we use more than one.

Handle-free operation also has a maintenance consequence people do not anticipate: the leaf is pushed by hand, always in roughly the same spot, so the finish at that point takes the wear that a handle would normally take. Choose a face material that cleans.

Why no hinge maker publishes a kilogram rating — and what they publish instead

This is the most important section on this page, and it contradicts most of what is written about hidden doors online.

There is no published kilogram-per-hinge rating for a standard cabinet cup hinge. Not from Blum, not from Häfele, not from Hettich. We went looking specifically for one: Blum’s full technical documentation runs to reveal tables, boring distances, overlay and mounting-plate tables and an operating temperature range, and contains no load figure at all. The omission is deliberate, and you can prove it is deliberate by watching what the same makers do the moment the product is door hardware rather than cabinet hardware — then they publish kilograms immediately, as the second table below shows.

What they publish for cabinet hinges is a count: how many hinges a door of a given weight and height needs.

Häfele’s chart is published on its 95° mini-hinge page and its applicability to full-size 110° hinges is unconfirmed, which is consistent with its more conservative bands. We carry that caveat rather than presenting the two columns as equivalent.

Notice three things. First, the two makers disagree by roughly a factor of two, with Blum the more permissive throughout. Second, both anchor to a 600 mm door width, and Blum adds a hinge from 600 to 650 mm — beyond that width the published guidance simply stops. Third, and this is the practical one, the tables top out around 10–12 kg. A full-height flush door leaf is not near that; it is off the end of the chart entirely.

Blum is also explicit that height drives the count independently of weight: a tall narrow door may warrant a third hinge even at a weight that does not strictly require one, and hinges should sit as far apart as possible. That matters for a hidden door, which is by definition tall and relatively narrow.

Now the honest bit about what that gap means. The numbers above are all verified from manufacturers’ own documents. The conclusion — that a jib door is heavier than a cabinet door and therefore needs door hardware rather than cabinet hardware — is our reasoning, not a sentence any manufacturer writes. We think the data supports it plainly: cabinet hinge guidance ends around 10–12 kg, concealed door hinges start at 45–50 kg for two, and there is nothing published in between. But we would rather tell you which part is sourced and which part is us than blur the two.

One rule that follows immediately, and that we see broken constantly: never divide a count rating by the count. Sugatsune’s HES3D-E190 is rated 100 kg per 2 pieces and 125 kg per 3 — which is not 50 kg each and then 41.7 kg each. The rating is for the assembly at the published count, because load does not distribute evenly across hinges and the maker knows it. Specify the count, not a per-hinge share.

At door scale the count-by-height logic reappears in the same shape. Rixson’s commercial pivot literature states that doors from 60 in (1524 mm) to 90 in (2286 mm) tall should use one intermediate pivot, with another for each additional 30 in (762 mm) of height — and that its size and weight guidelines assume the appropriate number of intermediate pivots. That is commercial door hardware and a different scale from a cabinet, but it is the same principle: the maker sells you a configuration, not a component rating.

Reveal tolerance: the millimetre that decides success

A hidden door succeeds or fails on one thing, and it is not the hardware. It is whether the gap around the leaf — the reveal — stays the same all the way round.

The eye is extremely good at spotting a line that is not parallel and extremely bad at judging the absolute size of a gap. A hidden door with a consistent 3 mm reveal and a hidden door with a consistent 5 mm reveal both disappear. A door whose reveal is 3 mm at the top and 5 mm at the bottom announces itself from across the room, and no amount of matching the finish will rescue it. That is why this is the section that decides whether the money was worth spending.

Which means the reveal is a number to be agreed and then held, not a number to be copied off a website. We set it at the measurement against the actual leaf thickness, the hardware chosen, the frame construction and the finished floor level, and we set it once. Three practical consequences:

  • The opening has to be square, and it usually is not. A conventional door hides an out-of-square opening behind an architrave. A jib door has no architrave, so the frame has to be packed and shimmed true before the leaf is fitted, and that is real work that belongs in the quote.
  • A pivot changes the reveal on the hinge side. Because the leaf swings partly backwards, the pivot-side gap has to clear the rotating edge. Do not price a pivot door and detail it like a hinged one.
  • Timber-based leaves move. In a Malaysian house the humidity swing between an air-conditioned bedroom and an unconditioned hallway is real, and a leaf that was perfect in a dry workshop can grow. This is one of the few genuine arguments for a slightly generous, absolutely consistent reveal over a tight one.

Flush finishes and grain matching

The second half of the illusion is the face. Three levels of ambition, in rising order of cost and difficulty:

Painted flush, matching the wall. The easiest to get right, because paint has no grain and no batch direction that the eye can catch. The failure mode is sheen rather than colour: a door face rolled in the same paint as a sprayed wall will read differently in raking light. Match the sheen, not only the colour code.

Laminate or melamine, matching the joinery. Now direction matters. A wood-effect laminate has a grain direction printed into it, and if the flanking panels run vertically and the door runs horizontally the door is visible from ten metres. Batch matters too — the same code from two production runs is not always the same sheet. Order the door face from the same batch as the panels either side, at the same time, and tell your fabricator that it is a matched set rather than four separate panels.

Veneer, continuous across the wall. The most convincing and the most demanding. Here the grain is meant to run through the door as if the wall were one board, which requires the veneer to be sequence-matched and the panels cut in order. It is a workshop decision made before anything is cut, and it cannot be retrofitted.

Whatever the face, the edge is where a hidden door gives itself away first, because the reveal puts the door edge on permanent display at eye level. What it costs

We do not publish a figure for a concealed door leaf, and the reason is not coyness. The cost of this one item genuinely swings on things we can only see on site: whether the opening is square, whether the wall is masonry or a stud partition, whether the leaf is a cabinet panel or an architectural door, which rung of the hardware ladder it needs, whether the reveal continues a skirting, and whether the face is painted, laminated or sequence-matched veneer. Two jobs described in the same sentence can differ by a multiple.

What we can give you is the surrounding scale, so a quote can be sanity-checked. The wall of joinery a hidden door usually sits in is dry-zone carpentry priced per foot run — the rows above (market estimate 2026, indicative Klang Valley). If a quote prices the flanking cabinetry sensibly and then carries a hidden door as a small round number, that is a sign the hardware and the frame preparation have not been thought about. Worked example: a concealed store-room door

The brief: a store room off a living area, existing opening about 900 mm wide and just over 2 m tall, in a wall that will carry a run of full-height joinery. The client wants the store door to disappear into that run.

Step 1 — where does the leaf land on the published ladder? Start at the bottom. Cabinet cup hinges: Blum’s published bands run to 6–12 kg on three hinges and assume a 600 mm door width, adding a hinge from 600 to 650 mm. Our leaf is 900 mm wide, which is already 250 mm past the widest width any of the three makers publishes guidance for, and a full-height faced leaf is well past 12 kg. So the cabinet-hinge tables do not merely say “use more hinges” — they stop. Adding a fifth cup hinge to a door that is off the end of the chart is not engineering, it is hoping.

Step 2 — step onto door hardware. The first rung is a concealed door hinge: Häfele publishes a maximum door weight for 2 hinges of 50 kg, and Startec’s concealed mortice hinge 45 kg for 2, with a minimum door thickness of 25 mm. For a heavier or thicker leaf, Sugatsune’s HES3D-E190 is published at 100 kg per 2 pieces and 125 kg per 3. For our store-room leaf, a concealed door hinge at the published count is the right rung.

Step 3 — would a pivot be better? Only if the leaf is thick enough. FritsJurgens requires a minimum door thickness of 40 mm, and 50 mm for the M42+ variant, with widths from 400 to 5000 mm and door height unlimited. A 35 mm store-room leaf simply does not qualify. A pivot is the right answer for a statement door in a hallway, not for a store cupboard.

Step 4 — what is the frame fixed to? If the opening is in a masonry wall, fixings have a real load path. fischer publishes recommended loads per single DuoPower anchor of 0.40–5.30 kN in concrete of grade C20/25 or better and 0.30–1.35 kN in solid brick, against only 0.12–0.15 kN in 12.5 mm gypsum plasterboard. In kilograms — our conversion at about 102 kgf per kN, not the maker’s own wording — that is roughly 41–540 kg per anchor in concrete against about 12–15 kg in plasterboard. fischer also states that its recommended loads already include the required safety factors and are valid in dry base material at substrate temperatures up to 24 °C. A door frame screwed to plasterboard with no stud or noggin behind it has no rated path at all, and a hidden door is exactly the leaf that will find that out, because it is being pushed rather than pulled by a handle.

Step 5 — the reveal and the face. Frame packed square first. Reveal agreed on site and held constant top to bottom. Door face ordered from the same laminate batch and in the same grain direction as the flanking panels. Push latch adjustable and rated for the leaf. Then, and only then, does the price mean anything — which is why we quote this one at the measurement.

Why hidden doors fail

In the order we get called out for them:

  • The reveal goes out of parallel. Almost always because the opening was never made square, or because the leaf has moved with humidity. The most common single failure, and the most visible.
  • Furniture hardware on an architectural leaf. Cup hinges on a full-height flush door. It sags, the reveal closes at the top and opens at the bottom, and the screw seats eventually strip in the board. This is the failure the section above exists to prevent.
  • The push latch is not rated or not adjustable. The leaf sits proud, or it does not stay shut, or it needs a shove that leaves a mark on the face.
  • The frame is fixed to nothing. A stud partition with no noggin where the frame fixings land. It works for a year.
  • The leaf drops and starts to bind. Once it does, it is an adjustment or a re-hang rather than a new door — see door repair.
  • The face does not match after all. Different batch, different grain direction, or paint of the same colour in a different sheen. Nothing can be done afterwards except re-facing.
  • The floor finish changed after the leaf was made. A leaf sized before the floor is laid, then a thicker tile or an underlay goes in. Now it binds.

Five of those six are decided before anything is fabricated. That is the argument for measuring on site rather than quoting off a plan.

Floor levels, thresholds and carpet clearance

The bottom of a hidden door is the one edge where the illusion meets the building, and it deserves its own conversation at measurement.

There is no published clearance figure to quote you here, for a cabinet front or for a jib door, so we will not pretend there is. What there is instead is a sequence, and getting the sequence right is what avoids the problem:

  • Measure after the floor finish is down, not before. Tile thickness plus adhesive, or laminate plus underlay, is easily enough to turn a good gap into a binding leaf. If the leaf must be made first, the floor build-up has to be confirmed in writing.
  • Watch for a change of finish under the door. A store room in screed or bare tile behind a living area in timber-look laminate means the floor level changes exactly where the leaf swings. That is a threshold detail, and on a hidden door there is usually no architrave to hide it against.
  • A pivot sweeps differently. Part of the leaf travels backwards over the floor behind the frame line, so the clearance has to work on both sides of the pivot point, not just in front.
  • Carpet and rugs. A rug that runs up to the door is the single most common cause of a hidden door that scrapes. If a rug is planned, say so at measurement — the leaf can be made to clear it.
  • Airflow. An undercut is often doing a job you have not thought about: return air for an air-conditioned room, or ventilation for a store cupboard. Closing the gap right down for the sake of appearance can leave a store room stuffy, and in Malaysian humidity a sealed store cupboard is where mould starts.

What to write into the quote

A hidden door quote you can hold someone to states all of the following:

  • Which kind of hidden door it is — a cabinet panel in a joinery run, or an architectural leaf in a wall. They are different jobs.
  • The hardware by name, with its published rating and the count. “Concealed hinges” is not a specification. Makers rate a configuration, not a component — so the count belongs on the quote.
  • The push latch, its type, and how many.
  • The reveal figure, agreed on site, and a statement that it is held constant on all four sides.
  • Who squares the opening. Frame packing and shimming is real work and it is where a cheap quote has quietly left a gap.
  • The face material, batch and grain direction, with the flanking panels named as a matched set.
  • Edge treatment, because the reveal puts the leaf edge permanently on show.
  • The floor build-up assumed, and who confirms it before the leaf is cut.
  • What the frame is fixed into, and what happens if it turns out to be plasterboard with nothing behind it.

Why is there no kg rating per hinge?
Because load does not distribute evenly between hinges, so a per-hinge figure would be misleading — and the makers clearly know it, because they publish kilograms the moment the product is door hardware rather than cabinet hardware. We extracted Blum’s full technical documentation looking for one: reveal tables, boring distances, overlay and mounting-plate tables, an operating temperature range, and no load figure anywhere. The practical rule is never to divide a count rating by the count. A hinge rated 125 kg per 3 pieces is not three hinges rated 41.7 kg each.
Should a hidden door use a pivot or concealed hinges?
Concealed hinges for most jobs; a pivot when the leaf is genuinely large, heavy or needs to open both ways. What reveal gap should a jib door have?
There is no published figure, and any specific millimetre you are quoted off a website is somebody’s workshop habit rather than a standard. What actually decides whether a hidden door works is consistency, not size: a door with the same gap all the way round disappears, while a door whose gap is 3 mm at the top and 5 mm at the bottom is visible across the room. So the reveal is agreed at the measurement against the real leaf, hardware, frame and finished floor level — and then held on all four sides. In a Malaysian house it is also worth being slightly generous rather than tight, because a timber-based leaf moves between an air-conditioned room and an unconditioned hallway.
How do I make the hidden door match the wall around it?
It depends on the finish. Painted flush is the easiest, and the trap is sheen rather than colour — a rolled door face beside a sprayed wall reads differently in raking light, so match the sheen too. With laminate or melamine, the grain direction and the production batch both have to match, so the door face and the flanking panels should be ordered together as a matched set. Continuous veneer across the whole wall is the most convincing and has to be sequence-matched and cut in order in the workshop, which means it cannot be retrofitted later.
Can I put a hidden door in a plasterboard wall?
Yes, but only where the frame is fixed to real structure behind the board.
