Sliding door jumping the track, a door that will not close, or a panel going soft? Most built-in wardrobe faults are repairable. Here is what causes each one, what a fix costs, and when rebuilding is the better call.

Wardrobe repair covers sliding doors that jump the track, swing doors that sag or will not close, hinges torn out of the board, and swollen or peeling panels. Most of these are repairable, and hinge and track faults are usually the cheapest to fix. Hardware is priced per piece: RM3 – RM8 for a plain hinge and RM8 – RM20 for a generic soft-close hinge, while a set of wardrobe hinges replaced is listed at RM100 – RM300 (market estimate 2026, indicative Klang Valley). A soft or swollen carcass is the point where rebuilding beats repairing. WhatsApp ClickBina photos and a short video of the fault for a free quote.
Built-in wardrobes fail in a fairly fixed order. Alignment goes before anything breaks. Next the sliding track fouls or the hinge screws loosen, and in humid rooms the board edges swell. Knowing which stage you are at tells you whether this is a ten-minute adjustment, a hardware repair or a rebuild.
| What you see | Likely cause | Usual fix |
|---|---|---|
| Sliding door hard to push, grinding | Hair, dust and grit in the bottom guide or track | Clean the channel; do not oil it |
| Sliding door jumps off or hangs crooked | Worn trolley wheels, a loose top track, or a guide knocked out of place | Re-seat and adjust; replace worn trolleys or guides |
| Swing door drops at the outer corner | Loose hinge screws, or too few hinges for the door | Tighten and adjust; add a hinge on tall or mirrored doors |
| Swing door will not stay shut, or slams | Worn hinge spring or failed soft-close damper | Replace the hinge |
| Hinge plate wobbling, screw holes chewed out | Screw seat stripped in particleboard | Fill and re-drill, or fit a repair plate |
| Door or panel edge thick and bloated | Moisture got in past the edge banding | Find the damp; replace the panel or door |
| Hollow sound when tapped, mud tubes | Termites | Treat the termites before any carpentry |

💬 Get Your Free QuoteAlmost all wardrobe sliding doors are top-hung: the top track carries the weight on small trolleys, and the bottom guide mainly stops the door swinging. That is why a sliding wardrobe that drags is rarely a broken door. The usual causes, from most to least common:
A basic 2-track aluminium sliding system is listed at RM200 – RM500 per door set (market estimate 2026, indicative Klang Valley). That covers only a basic 2-track system, not a heavy top-hung system for tall mirrored doors. The wardrobe door types guide explains why a track has to be chosen by its rated door weight, and we quote upgrades by system name once we know the door size and material.
A swing wardrobe door hangs on concealed cup hinges, the same type used on kitchen cabinets, and most swing-door complaints are fixed by adjusting them. Each hinge has three screws you can reach with the door open: side (evens the gap between a pair of doors), depth (makes them sit flush) and height (the mounting-plate screws). Tighten every visible screw first, because a surprising number of “sagging” doors are simply loose. Then adjust in quarter-turns, one door at a time. The soft close hinge guide walks through the sequence.
Adjustment stops working when the soft-close damper has died (the door slams however well it is aligned), the arm is bent, or the hinge has gone stiff with corrosion. Then the hinge is replaced. Tall wardrobe doors and mirrored doors are the ones most often under-hinged. If a full-height door keeps dropping, it may simply need a third or fourth hinge. That is cheap to add at repair time and is the fix that prevents the next failure.
The worst common failure is a hinge cup or mounting plate that has pulled out of the wardrobe side, taking a chunk of board with it. It happens most on particleboard wardrobes where a heavy door has been slammed for years. Driving the same screw back into the same hole never holds. Repairs that last give the screw fresh material: fill the void with wood-repair filler or glued dowels and re-drill once cured, move to a slightly larger screw that bites into sound board, or fit a repair plate that spreads the load. If the board around the hole is soft or swollen rather than just broken, none of these will last. That panel, or that wardrobe section, needs replacing.
Most wardrobes are built from melamine-faced board. The melamine face itself resists moisture, but the board fails where water or humidity reaches an unsealed edge, a drilled hole or damaged edge banding. The core then swells and the face lifts. In a bedroom that usually means one of these:
Swelling is permanent: a swollen edge does not shrink back when it dries. An edge tape lifting on a hard, sound panel can be re-banded. A soft or bloated panel has to be replaced. Always find the damp first, or the new panel swells the same way. For wall damp and mould, see the wall damp and mould guide; for board edges, the edge banding guide.
Built-in wardrobes stand against walls and often reach the floor, which is exactly where termites work unseen. Signs include panels or skirting that sound hollow when tapped, mud tubes running up the wall behind, and discarded wings after a swarm. If you see them, leave any mud tube alone for the inspector and do not repair the wardrobe yet. New board fixed to a live colony is eaten too. Get the termites confirmed and treated first (the termite inspection guide covers what an inspection looks for), then decide which panels to replace. Plywood resists moisture better than particleboard, but it is not termite-proof either.
Repairs are quoted by scope after we see the fault. These are the published reference points (market estimate 2026, indicative Klang Valley):
| Item | Price (2026, Klang Valley) | What the figure covers |
|---|---|---|
| Set of kitchen / wardrobe hinges replaced | RM100 – RM300 | Hinge replacement across a set of doors |
| Standard hinge (no soft-close) | RM3 – RM8 per hinge | Hardware only |
| Soft-close hinge, generic / DTC | RM8 – RM20 per hinge | Hardware only |
| Soft-close hinge, Blum / Hettich / Hafele | RM18 – RM40 per hinge | Hardware only, European brands |
| Ball-bearing drawer runner | RM25 – RM60 per pair | Hardware only |
| Basic 2-track aluminium sliding system | RM200 – RM500 per door set | Basic 2-track system only, not heavy top-hung systems |
For hardware, multiply the per-piece price by what your wardrobe actually has. A swing door normally has two hinges, and more on tall or mirrored doors. We do not publish a flat “wardrobe repair” price, because re-seating a sliding door and replacing two swollen panels are very different jobs.
The comparison that matters is against a new wardrobe, which is priced per foot run with the doors included (market estimate 2026, indicative Klang Valley):
| New wardrobe build | Price per foot run | Repair is usually better when... |
|---|---|---|
| Melamine (18mm E1 board) | RM180 – RM350 per ft run | the carcass is dry and the fault is hinges, track or a single panel |
| Moisture-resistant (MR) plywood | RM350 – RM550 per ft run | only one section is damp-damaged and the rest is sound |
| Premium laminate on MR plywood | RM500 – RM800 per ft run | the wardrobe is a good one worth keeping |
| Solid timber (rubberwood / teak) | RM700 – RM1,200 per ft run | almost always, since solid timber is worth repairing |
For scale, a standard three-door built-in wardrobe lands at about RM2,500 – RM6,000 (market estimate 2026, indicative Klang Valley). Rules of thumb: repair hinge, track, drawer and single-panel faults on a dry carcass. Replace the doors when the boxes are sound but the fronts are damaged or dated, which is the wardrobe version of kitchen refacing. Rebuild when the carcass is soft, swollen along its base, or termite-damaged, or when the layout no longer suits the room. If you are changing door type, for example from swing to sliding, expect new doors, a new head detail and often a new front frame. At that point it is worth pricing against a new wardrobe.
Leave these to a carpenter: lifting a heavy mirrored door off its track, repairing stripped screw seats, replacing panels, and anything involving termites or a damp wall.
ClickBina builds cabinets and wardrobes in-house, so the same cabinet team that makes new wardrobes repairs existing ones: re-hanging and adjusting doors, replacing hinges, tracks, trolleys and runners, repairing torn-out hinge seats, and replacing swollen panels or doors.
