When a Malaysian kitchen cabinet dies, it almost never dies at the door. It dies at the box — the carcass — usually in the base unit under the sink, where a slow tap drip or a weeping trap has been quietly soaking the bottom panel for months. The door still looks fine while the shelf sags, the back panel goes soft, and the whole unit starts to smell. That is why the carcass specification is the single most consequential line in a cabinet quotation, and why plywood kitchen cabinets are worth understanding properly.
Plywood is made by peeling timber into thin veneers and gluing them together in odd-numbered layers with the grain of each layer crossed at ninety degrees to the last. That cross-graining is the entire point: it makes the panel dimensionally stable, resistant to splitting, and far better at holding a screw than any pressed board, because there is real continuous timber running in both directions instead of glued-together particles. Grade in plywood is mostly a statement about the adhesive holding the veneers together, plus the quality of the veneers themselves. These are the grades you will actually be offered in the Klang Valley:

That distinction is where most of the confusion in the market comes from, and it is worth its own section.
“Waterproof plywood” is one of the highest-volume searches in this category, and it describes a product that does not exist. WBP and marine grades guarantee that the glue lines will not fail when soaked or boiled — the sheet will not delaminate into its layers. They guarantee nothing about the timber itself. Wood is an organic material: left permanently wet, veneers still absorb water, swell, lose strength, and eventually host fungal rot regardless of what is holding them together. A marine-grade panel sitting in a puddle for a year is a marine-grade panel that has rotted.
The practical translation is simple. Buy the best glue line you can justify, because delamination is a real and common failure. Then seal every cut edge, every drilled hole and every screw penetration, because that is where water actually enters — and treat any standing water in a base unit as a plumbing fault to be fixed today, not a durability question. If a supplier tells you their plywood is waterproof and needs no sealing, that is a claim to test, not a specification. Sixteen millimetres is the bare minimum for a kitchen carcass and eighteen is the standard worth paying for. The two millimetres sound trivial and are not. Screws driven into the edge of an 18 mm panel get meaningfully more material to bite into, so hinge plates, shelf pins and drawer runners stay put under load. Shelves in 18 mm deflect noticeably less across a wide span — the sag you see in an old kitchen full of crockery is usually a thin shelf, not a heavy one. And a thicker panel resists the racking that pulls a tall unit out of square over a decade.
Ask specifically about the back panel too. Many quotations that promise an 18 mm carcass quietly use a thin 3–5 mm back slotted into a groove, which is fine structurally but is the first thing to go soft if water gets behind the unit. On a base cabinet under a sink, a full-thickness back and a raised, sealed bottom panel are worth asking for by name. And check whether the plinth — the recessed strip at floor level — is plywood at all: in a wet kitchen it should be PVC or aluminium, because that is the part that meets mop water every week.
Termites do not care that a board has been glued and pressed. Plywood is timber, and subterranean termites will tunnel through it exactly as they will through a solid frame, particularly in ground-floor landed homes and anywhere joinery meets a wall that touches soil. The classic discovery is a kitchen base unit that sounds hollow when tapped and collapses when opened, with the doors still looking untouched from the outside.
Two defences are worth specifying. First, chemically treated plywood — boards treated at manufacture against fungal decay and insect attack — costs a little more and is a reasonable insurance premium on ground-floor base units. Second, keep timber out of the highest-risk positions entirely: a PVC or aluminium plinth, a rigid PVC or metal carcass for the sink base, and no direct timber-to-masonry contact. The last row is the number most people want. The short version: particleboard is wood chips pressed with resin — cheapest, weakest at the screw, and the fastest to swell once wet. MDF is finer wood fibre pressed into a very uniform board — excellent for routed and sprayed doors because it machines cleanly and has no grain, but heavy and equally vulnerable to water at an unsealed edge. Plywood is real cross-laminated timber — the strongest at the screw, the lightest for its strength, and the most forgiving of an occasional soaking.

Do this before fabrication starts, not on installation day. The most reliable single move is asking for an offcut of the actual board and photographing the edge and the stamp — a supplier confident in the specification hands one over immediately, and the photograph is what you refer back to if a different board turns up.
Plywood earns its premium in the base units, under the sink, in the wet kitchen, in a bathroom vanity and anywhere a heavy undermount sink or a stone top needs a box that will not sag. It is over-specified in a dry-kitchen upper run holding cups, in a wardrobe, in a study or in a TV console — melamine on particleboard does that job for years at a fraction of the price, which is why built-in wardrobes are rarely plywood. And it is the wrong material entirely for genuinely permanent standing water or outdoor exposure, where aluminium, stainless or rigid PVC are the honest answers. A good board assembled badly still fails. The details that decide a plywood kitchen’s lifespan are the unglamorous ones: every cut edge banded, including the top and back edges nobody sees; sealed drill holes; a raised bottom panel in the sink base so a drip lands on the floor of the cabinet rather than soaking into an edge; adjustable legs rather than a timber base sitting flat on a wet floor; and a plinth in PVC or aluminium.
Fixings matter as much. Cabinets should be mechanically fixed back to the wall, not just to each other, and hinge plates should land in solid material rather than in a thin panel edge. Nothing on this page matters if the sink base is wet for six months. Check under the sink every few months with a torch and a dry hand: look for a dark ring on the bottom panel, a soft patch at a corner, or a musty smell, and trace any drip at the trap, the tap tail or the hose clip.
