The four wardrobe fronts we build in the Klang Valley, what each one really costs, and the rated door weight that decides whether a sliding wardrobe still runs sweetly in year eight.

Every built-in wardrobe we fit in the Klang Valley uses one of four fronts, and the honest way to choose between them is to stand in the bedroom and look at the floor rather than at a catalogue. A swing door needs the space in front of it kept permanently clear. A sliding door needs none, but gives you only part of the wardrobe at a time. A bi-fold splits the difference and buys that compromise with more hardware. An open front gives you everything at once and asks you to keep it tidy forever.
The carcass behind all four is usually identical, which is why the door type moves the price less than most people expect. What actually changes is the ironmongery and the reveal — and, in a Malaysian bedroom, whether the leaf will still run sweetly after five years of humidity and hair-dust in the track.

💬 Get Your Instant QuoteOne dimension underpins all four. A built-in wardrobe frame is 58 cm deep on an IKEA PAX unit and 60 cm on a Rauch one, depending on maker. Read that carefully: it is the external frame dimension, not the usable internal depth. No maker publishes an internal figure, so treat any quote that promises “580 mm inside” as a guess. For scale, a standard wooden clothes hanger is 43 cm wide — though we would not tell you the frame depth is caused by the hanger, because no maker says so and the arithmetic does not close.
If your bedroom cannot give up that depth, the fix is not a shallower rail but a different hanging direction. Below the standard depth the maker changes the hanging orientation rather than the rail: a forward-facing rail lets a 40 cm deep frame hang clothes at all, whereas the conventional side-to-side rail is sold only for the 58 cm frame. A forward-facing rail turns a corridor-width alcove into usable hanging space, at the cost of seeing one garment face-on instead of a row of shoulders. It is the single most useful trick in a small Malaysian condo bedroom, and it works with every door type on this page.
The default, and still the right answer in most bedrooms that can spare the floor. A swing front gives you the whole wardrobe open at once, takes the cheapest hardware, seals best against dust, and is the easiest of the four to adjust years later — a European cup hinge has three adjustment screws and a competent carpenter can bring a dropped door back to a straight reveal in two minutes.
The number that matters is not a load rating, it is a count. There is no published kilogram-per-hinge rating for a standard cup hinge anywhere — Blum, Häfele and Hettich all express capacity as a hinge count against door weight and height instead. Blum puts it plainly: two hinges are optimal for door weights of 4–6 kg and three for 6–12 kg, valid up to a 600 mm door width, with an extra hinge required from 600 to 650 mm wide. Häfele publishes a stricter chart — 2 hinges for 2–4 kg, 3 for 4–6 kg, 4 for 6–8 kg and 5 for 8–10 kg, again at 600 mm door width, over a door-height axis of 500–2500 mm. One caveat travels with that chart and we will not drop it: it is published on Häfele’s 95° mini-hinge page, and its applicability to full-size 110° hinges is unconfirmed, which is consistent with its more conservative bands.
Those two makers do not agree, and you should know that before a supplier quotes you a number. They agree only to within about a factor of two, with Blum the most permissive: at two hinges Blum says 4–6 kg where Häfele says 2–4 kg; at three hinges Blum says 6–12 kg where Häfele says 4–6 kg. All of them anchor to a 600 mm door width, and all of them say height and narrowness push the count up. Blum is explicit that a tall narrow door may warrant a third hinge even at a weight that does not strictly require one, and that hinges should sit as far apart as possible. On a full-height 7 ft wardrobe leaf we fit more hinges than the weight bands alone would ask for, because the leaf is tall, narrow and hung in a humid room — three things that all push the count up.
There is no published floor-clearance or swing-arc figure for a hinged wardrobe door. We looked: no manufacturer and no issuing body states one. Anyone quoting you a millimetre gap for the bottom of a swing door is quoting a workshop habit, not a standard. What we set on site is a reveal that stays even along the full height of the leaf and a bottom gap that clears the actual floor finish, measured after the tiles or laminate are down — not before.
Sliding is what you fit when the bed, a walkway or a bedside table sits inside the arc of a swing door. It buys back that floor at two costs. The first is arithmetic: on a two-leaf run you can only ever open half the wardrobe, so the compartment planning has to assume it. The second is that you are now buying a rated mechanical system rather than a pair of hinges, and that system has a weight limit you cannot argue with.
Almost all wardrobe sliding gear is top hung. The maker’s own naming is the clue — “suspension fitting” and “trolley hanger” at the top, “bottom guide” at the bottom — and on Häfele’s heaviest system the bottom guide is optional altogether. Our reading of that, and we state it as our reasoning rather than as a manufacturer’s sentence, is that the top track carries the weight and the bottom part only stops the leaf swinging. It matters practically: the head detail above the wardrobe has to be solid enough to carry the doors, and a track screwed into a plasterboard bulkhead with nothing behind it will sag no matter what the leaf weighs.
The bottom guide on a furniture sliding door sits in the cabinet base panel, not on the floor, so there is no floor gap to specify. If a supplier hands you an “11 mm floor clearance” for a sliding wardrobe, they have read a component dimension off a drawing and turned it into a clearance. It is not one.
On standards, be careful how it is worded. Hettich states that its TopLine L furniture fitting is intended for application in furniture to EN 14749, for use in dry indoor environments, and that the fitting is tested to EN 15706 Level 3. That is the manufacturer stating what its fitting is for — it is not us telling you what EN 14749 requires. The text of that standard is paywalled and we have not read it, so we will not paraphrase its clauses. The useful part for a buyer is the phrase “dry indoor environments”: furniture sliding gear is not yard or wet-zone hardware.
A bi-fold folds in the middle, so the leaf projects roughly half as far into the room as a swing door of the same width while still opening most of the wardrobe. In a Malaysian bedroom that usually means a wardrobe can sit opposite a bed instead of beside it.
The trade-off is hardware density. A bi-fold front carries a hinge line down the middle of every pair, a pivot at one edge and a guide running in a track — more moving parts per metre of wardrobe front than any of the other three types. Every one of them is another thing to fall out of alignment, and alignment is exactly what a folding door is unforgiving about: a bi-fold that is 2 mm out will bind at the fold long before a swing door of the same tolerance would rub.
Folding and pivot-slide fronts also sit at the light end of the load range. Across makers, furniture pivot systems run about 25–50 kg — Häfele’s Finetta Spinfront is rated 30 kg for three hinges and 50 kg for five, with a maximum door width of 650 mm, and the HAWA Folding Concepta is 25 kg. Those are real ceilings. A mirrored bi-fold leaf can eat a 25 kg allowance quickly, and that is the usual reason a folding front feels flimsy: the leaf was specified before the hardware was.
The fourth option is no door at all, or a handleless front that reads as a wall until you push it. Open shelving is the cheapest front to build and by far the most demanding to live with: dust settles on every folded garment, and in an unairconditioned Malaysian bedroom the same open airflow that keeps clothes from smelling musty also carries humidity straight onto them. It works beautifully in a dressing area with its own door, and poorly in a bedroom that doubles as a landing zone for laundry.
Handleless fronts — push-to-open catches, J-profile lips or routed finger pulls — keep the doors and lose the ironmongery. They look calm, they cost more to make because the profile has to be machined into the door rather than screwed onto it, and they raise the accuracy the fabrication has to hit: a J-profile reveals every millimetre of misalignment along its whole length. This is the part of a sliding wardrobe quotation that nobody reads and everybody should. There is no such thing as “the sliding door track”. Häfele’s own sliding systems span 15 kg to 180 kg per door depending on the system — a twelve-fold spread inside one maker’s catalogue. Hettich’s furniture range is narrower and works the same way, from a 30 kg bottom-running SlideLine M up to TopLine XL at the top.

Two things follow. First, a quote that says “aluminium sliding system” and nothing else has told you nothing: the rated door weight is the specification, and it should be written down. Second, be wary of a very heavy figure quoted for a bedroom. The 180 kg flat-track system is architectural gear for room dividers and barn-style doors up to 3.0 m tall and 44 mm thick. Quoting it for a wardrobe is not thoroughness, it is a mismatch.
One genuine conflict is worth carrying to your supplier. Hettich’s 2019 Quickfinder rates TopLine XL at 80 kg and 2600 mm; the current Hettich shop listing says 100 kg and 3000 mm. Both are the maker’s own words. We are not going to silently pick one for you — ask which figure your quoted system carries, because a mirrored 2.6 m leaf is exactly the door where the difference bites.
Sliding door gear is cycle-tested to EN 1527:2013, 100,000 cycles. That is the one durability number in this whole field that comes from a published test rather than from a salesperson, and it is worth understanding rather than repeating.
A cycle is one open and one close. Put a household rate against it and the figure stops being abstract. At 6 cycles a day — a guest bedroom or a second wardrobe — 100,000 cycles is roughly 46 years. At 20 cycles a day, which is a realistic master-bedroom wardrobe used by two people who both dress and change at home, it is about 14 years. That arithmetic is ours, not the standard’s: EN 1527 states the cycle count, not a service life.
Read it as a floor, not a promise. The test runs a correctly installed door on a correctly loaded track in laboratory conditions. It says nothing about a track that was undersized for the leaf, a head detail that was not solid, or five years of grit in a bottom guide that was never cleaned. In practice those three things, not the cycle count, decide whether your wardrobe still slides properly in year eight.
We will not give you a number of years per component, because no manufacturer publishes one and inventing one would be worse than useless. What we can tell you is the order things fail in, which is consistent across the wardrobes we are called out to repair.
Note what is not on that list: the track wearing out. On a properly specified top-hung system, the rated mechanical life is long enough that something else will always go first.
Here is the part of this page that will surprise people. A built-in wardrobe is quoted per foot run for the wardrobe as built, doors included, and the door type mostly moves you within the band rather than between bands (market estimate 2026, indicative Klang Valley):

What visibly changes with the door type is the hardware line. On a swing front that is the hinges, and this is the one place a per-foot comparison is genuinely available (market estimate 2026, indicative Klang Valley):

Hardware tier adds the per-hinge upgrade cost over a standard hinge, assuming about 1.3 hinges per foot run (one 18-inch door on two hinges). On an 8-foot wardrobe that is roughly RM48 – RM128 to move from bare hinges to generic soft-close, and RM160 – RM336 for Blum, Hettich or Häfele. Against a carcass at RM2,800 – RM4,400 for the same eight feet in moisture-resistant plywood, the hinge upgrade is a small fraction of the job and the part you touch every single day.
For sliding, we deliberately do not publish a single track price here. The systems in the table above span 15 kg to 180 kg, so a figure that does not say which rated system it covers is a placeholder rather than a price. That applies to our own numbers too: the built-in wardrobe guide quotes RM200–RM500 per door set for a basic 2-track aluminium system, and that is all it covers — it is not a rate for a 100 kg top-hung system carrying a tall mirrored leaf. We quote the track by name and rating at the on-site measurement, once we know the leaf size, the leaf material and whether it carries mirror or glass.

Condo master bedroom, bed close to the wardrobe wall. Sliding, almost always. The arc of a swing door usually lands on the bed or on the gap you walk through to reach it. Specify the track by rated weight, and accept up front that half the wardrobe is open at a time — then put the daily clothes on the side you can reach without moving anything.
Terrace or semi-D bedroom with real floor. Swing. It is cheaper, it seals better against dust, every compartment opens at once, and it is trivially adjustable in year six. There is no good reason to buy a mechanism you do not need.
Narrow room, wardrobe on the long wall opposite the bed. Bi-fold, if the budget carries the hardware, or sliding if it does not. This is the one layout where the half-arc genuinely earns its keep.
Dressing area or walk-in with its own door. Open fronts, and enjoy them. The dust and humidity objection largely disappears once the whole room closes.
Alcove shallower than a standard frame. Any door type, but change the rail to forward-facing, as above. This is a planning decision, not a hardware one, and it has to be made before the carcass is cut. Our bedroom design guide covers how the wardrobe position drives the rest of the room.
A wardrobe quote you can actually compare against another one states all of the following. If any is missing, ask — the gaps are where two quotes quietly differ.
