Drawer Runners & Slides
Ball-Bearing vs Undermount vs Tandem Box (2026)

The runner decides whether a kitchen drawer glides for years or sags within months. Here is how the types compare, what to ask for, and how to fix the common faults.

Kitchen pot drawer at full extension on a concealed undermount runner

Drawer runners (drawer slides) come in three main types: cheap roller runners, side-mounted ball-bearing runners, and undermount runners that sit hidden under the drawer, including full metal drawer systems such as tandem boxes. For kitchen drawers that carry pots and plates, ball-bearing runners are the sensible minimum and undermount soft-close systems the premium choice; roller runners sag and rattle under load. As a guide, a pair of side-mounted ball-bearing runners is typically RM25 – RM60, and a branded metal drawer system RM150 – RM400 per drawer. When comparing cabinet quotes, check the runner type, extension, soft-close and brand, not just the board.

What a drawer runner does

A drawer runner is the pair of tracks that lets a drawer slide in and out. It carries the weight of the drawer and everything in it, keeps it level as it opens, and, on better runners, closes it gently. Drawers fail more often than cabinet doors because they carry more weight and move further, so the runner is the piece of hardware most worth paying attention to in a kitchen.

Runners are sold under many names: drawer slide, drawer channel, rel laci, runner laci. The words differ; the three types below are the same everywhere.

Extension: how far the drawer comes out

  • Partial extension: the drawer stops short, leaving the back part of the drawer hard to reach. Common on cheap roller runners.
  • Full extension: the whole drawer box clears the cabinet so you can see and reach everything at the back. This is what to ask for in a kitchen.
  • Over-extension: the drawer travels slightly beyond the cabinet front, useful under an overhanging worktop.

Full-extension runners are one of the cheapest upgrades that make a kitchen feel better every day, because the back of a deep drawer is no longer dead space.

Soft-close and push-to-open

Soft-close runners catch the drawer in the last part of its travel and pull it shut slowly, so drawers never slam. Push-to-open runners let a handle-less drawer open with a push on the front; they suit flat, minimalist fronts but can be opened by an accidental knee in a busy kitchen.

⚠️ Do not mix soft-close and push-to-open on the same drawer unless the runner is designed for both. The two mechanisms fight each other and the drawer either will not stay shut or will not open.

Load, length and drawer size

Every runner has a load rating and comes in set lengths. The right runner depends on what the drawer will hold and how deep the cabinet is:

  • Pot and pan drawers need a heavy-duty rating; a wide drawer loaded with cast-iron pots is the hardest job in the kitchen.
  • Cutlery and utensil drawers are light, but open dozens of times a day, so smoothness matters more than load.
  • Length should match the cabinet depth so the drawer uses the full space; a short runner in a deep cabinet wastes storage.
  • Wide drawers rack and twist; undermount systems with a synchronising bar keep them square.

Ask the carpenter which rating and length each drawer has; a good quotation lists the hardware per drawer, not just “soft close”.

Reading the hardware lines on a cabinet quote

Two kitchen quotations can look identical per foot run and hide very different drawers. One may include full-extension soft-close runners on every drawer; the other may use roller runners and charge soft-close as an upgrade later. Before comparing prices, ask each carpenter to list, for every drawer, the runner type, whether it is full extension, whether it is soft-close, the brand and the load rating. If the answer is vague, assume the cheapest option and compare again.

The runner is only as good as the board it is screwed into

A runner fixed into swollen or crumbling board will work loose however good it is. That is why runners fail first in wet kitchens with particle-board carcasses, especially under the sink. Moisture-resistant plywood holds screws better; our plywood kitchen cabinet guide explains why hinge plates and drawer runners stay put in it under load.

Common faults and what they mean

SymptomLikely causeWhat to do
Drawer drops or sags when openWorn rollers or loose screws in soft boardRe-fix into sound board, or upgrade the runner
Drawer will not close fullySoft-close damper worn, or something jammed behindClear the back; replace the damper or runner
Grinding or rough movementDirt in the bearings, or a bent railClean; replace a bent rail
Drawer slams despite soft-closeDamper failed or disengagedRe-engage or replace the runner
Drawer front misalignedFront adjustment moved, or runner looseAdjust the front; tighten the runner fixings

Most runner problems are a screwdriver job if the board is sound. If the screws spin in the board, the fix is the carcass, not a new runner.

Replacing runners yourself

  1. Empty the drawer and take it out; most runners release with a lever or a lift at full extension.
  2. Note the runner type, length and mounting position, and measure the cabinet depth and the gap between drawer and carcass.
  3. Buy a matching type and length; side-mounted runners need a specific side gap, undermount runners need a drawer box made for them.
  4. Fix the cabinet member first, level and square, then the drawer member, and test before loading.

Converting a side-mounted drawer to undermount usually means a new drawer box, which is carpentry rather than a hardware swap.

Common Questions

What is the best drawer runner for a kitchen?
Full-extension, soft-close ball-bearing runners are the sensible minimum; undermount soft-close runners or a metal drawer system are the premium choice, especially for pot drawers.
What is the difference between undermount and side-mount drawer slides?
Side-mount runners fix to the drawer sides and are visible; undermount runners sit hidden under the drawer box, run more smoothly and usually include soft-close, but need a drawer box built for them.
How much do drawer runners cost in Malaysia?
A pair of side-mounted ball-bearing runners is typically RM25 – RM60, and a branded metal drawer system RM150 – RM400 per drawer.
Why does my drawer sag when I open it?
Usually worn roller runners or screws loosening in soft or swollen board. Re-fix into sound board or upgrade to ball-bearing or undermount runners.
Can I replace drawer runners myself?
Yes, if you match the type and length and the board is sound. Converting side-mount to undermount usually needs a new drawer box.
What does full extension mean?
The whole drawer box comes out of the cabinet so you can reach the back. Partial-extension runners leave the back of the drawer hard to reach.
Are soft-close runners worth it?
Usually. On built-in cabinets, soft-close hinges and runners add roughly RM50 – RM120 per door or drawer and noticeably improve the feel and lifespan.
