Tatami Platforms & Platform Beds
With Storage: Layout, Boards & Cost (2026)

Raising the floor to hide a room's worth of storage, and the checks to make before the carpentry starts.

A tatami platform is a raised timber floor built across part or all of a room, with storage boxes underneath and mats or a mattress on top; a platform bed is the same idea shrunk to the size of one bed. Both turn the space under the bed into deep storage, which is why they are popular in small condo bedrooms, box rooms and study-cum-guest rooms. They are built and priced like other built-ins, per foot run of carpentry: about RM180 – RM300 in melamine board, RM280 – RM420 in laminate and RM350 – RM600 on a moisture-resistant plywood carcass (market estimate 2026, indicative Klang Valley). A site visit is RM150, waived if you go ahead.

What a tatami platform actually is

In a Japanese house, tatami are thick woven mats laid on the floor. In a Malaysian renovation the word has come to mean something slightly different: a raised platform, built from cabinet board on a frame, that covers a corner, one wall or the whole room. The top is the sleeping and sitting surface; the inside is a grid of storage boxes opened by lift-up lids, pull-out drawers or hatches in the front face. Real woven mats are optional. Many owners simply lay a mattress on the deck, or fit thin cushions so the platform doubles as a day bed.

It is joinery, not furniture. The platform is measured to the room, assembled on site and usually fixed to the wall, the same way as a built-in wardrobe. That makes it closer to built-in cabinetry than to a shop-bought bed, both in how it is quoted and in how hard it is to move later. Whether the boxes are made in a workshop or cut on site changes the dust, the timeline and the finish; the factory-made vs site-built carpentry guide compares the two.

Tatami platform, platform bed or divan: which one

Three related builds get called by the same names in quotations. Settle which one you mean before comparing prices, because the amount of carpentry, and so the price, is very different.

A stand-alone bed frame is covered in detail in the custom bed frame guide, including how the feet of carpentry are counted. If the room is too small for any fixed bed at all, a fold-away wall bed is the other route.

Storage under the platform: lids, drawers and hatches

The storage is the reason most people build a platform, so plan it first. Each way of opening the boxes has a different habit attached to it.

  • Lift-up lids give the deepest, cheapest boxes and suit things used a few times a year: luggage, festive decorations, spare bedding. Large lids need gas struts or stays so they stay open safely.
  • Drawers in the front face suit daily items such as clothes, toys and school books. They need clear floor space in front to open fully, and good runners, because a deep drawer full of clothes is heavy.
  • Front hatches or swing doors sit between the two: easy to reach, but the space behind them is awkward unless it holds boxes that slide out.
  • A hydraulic lift-up bed top raises the whole mattress platform in one piece. It suits a platform bed rather than a full-room deck, and the mechanism should be rated for the mattress you actually own.

The hardware choices are the same ones used on wall cabinets; the lift-up and flap-up fittings guide explains how stays and struts are matched to the weight of a lid. Mix the openings by zone: drawers near the walkway, deep lift-up boxes against the wall.

Which rooms suit a raised platform

A platform earns its place where floor space is scarce and storage is short. The small-home storage guide makes the general case for built-in storage over loose boxes; a platform is one of the largest single pieces of it.

  • Box rooms and small third bedrooms in condos and terraces, where a bed and a wardrobe cannot both fit. The box room conversion guide covers the ventilation and window questions to settle first.
  • Children's rooms, where a platform gives a play area by day and a bed by night, with toys in the drawers.
  • Study-cum-guest rooms, where a sunken desk well or a fold-down table sits in the deck and a mattress comes out only when guests stay.
  • Rental rooms, less often: a fixed platform is hard to take out, and some tenants simply want a bed.

It suits elderly users less well. Climbing up and down, and getting up from a mattress at deck level, are harder with age; a raised bed at a normal height is usually kinder.

Measure the room before you commit

Raising part of the floor changes everything else in the room. Walk the room with a tape and check each of these against the deck height you have in mind.

  1. Headroom. Sit on the planned deck and look up: a low ceiling, a beam or a false-ceiling box can make the space feel cramped once you are sitting higher.
  2. Aircon. The wall unit will now blow closer to your head. Check the airflow direction and whether the unit needs to move before the platform goes in.
  3. Windows. A deck that runs under a window raises you towards the sill. For children's rooms, think about the window grilles at the same time.
  4. Doors and wardrobes. Door swings, wardrobe doors and drawers must clear the platform edge.
  5. Power points and switches. Sockets behind the platform become unreachable; new points at deck height should be planned before the carpentry, not after.
  6. The floor. A floor that is damp, hollow or uneven should be dealt with first, because the platform will cover it for years.

Boards and finishes for Malaysian humidity

A platform is a large box sitting on the floor, often against an outside wall, with a mattress on top that traps body heat and moisture. That combination is exactly where cheap board swells and mould starts. The cabinet materials guide compares the boards; for a platform the practical rules are simple.

  • Use a moisture-resistant plywood carcass for the structural frame and the deck if the platform carries heavy storage or sits against an outside or bathroom wall.
  • Melamine or laminate faces are fine for the visible fronts in a dry room.
  • Seal every cut edge, especially along the floor line, where mopping water collects.
  • Lift the carcass off the floor on a plinth or legs rather than sitting raw board on the tiles.
  • Ask what formaldehyde grade the board is; the board grades guide explains the labels, which matter in a room you sleep in.

Mats, cushions and mattresses on the deck

What goes on top decides how the platform feels and how often it needs cleaning. Woven mats look the part but need dry air and regular airing. Synthetic mats are easier in humid rooms. A normal mattress laid flat on a solid deck will sweat underneath; slats, a ventilated deck or a breathable underlay help, and so does lifting the mattress to air it now and then. The mouldy wardrobe guide explains why closed boxes against cool walls grow mould, and the same physics applies under a mattress.

Fix the mattress size before the deck is drawn. A platform built a little too small for a standard mattress is a common and annoying mistake, and the lid layout should line up with where the mattress actually lies.

What a tatami platform costs

Platforms are priced per foot run of carpentry, using the same rates as other built-ins in ClickBina's custom bed frame guide (market estimate 2026, indicative Klang Valley):

What moves the number most is the length of carpentry, not the area of the room: a full-room deck with drawers on three sides has far more running feet than a one-wall platform with lift-up lids. Hardware, desk wells, steps, lighting and any electrical points are separate lines and should be listed as such.

Common tatami platform mistakes

  • Building over a damp or hollow floor without fixing it first.
  • Lids too large to lift comfortably, with no stays to hold them open.
  • Drawers that cannot open fully because the bed, door or wardrobe is in the way.
  • Sockets and switches buried behind the deck.
  • A mattress laid on a solid deck with no ventilation, so mould grows underneath.
  • Raw board edges at floor level that swell after a few months of mopping.
  • Forgetting how high the deck puts you relative to the aircon and the window.

Common Questions

What is a tatami platform?
A raised timber deck built across part or all of a room, with storage boxes underneath and mats or a mattress on top. In Malaysian renovations the name is used even when no woven tatami mats are fitted.
How much does a tatami platform cost in Malaysia?
It is priced per foot run of carpentry: about RM180 – RM300 in melamine, RM280 – RM420 in laminate and RM350 – RM600 on a moisture-resistant plywood carcass (market estimate 2026, indicative Klang Valley).
Lift-up lids or drawers?
Lift-up lids give deeper, cheaper storage for things used rarely; drawers suit daily items but need clear floor space in front. Most good platforms mix both.
Will a mattress on a platform go mouldy?
It can, if it lies flat on a solid deck in a humid room. Slats, a ventilated deck or a breathable underlay, and airing the mattress now and then, prevent most of it.
Is a tatami platform suitable for a small condo bedroom?
Often yes, because it combines the bed and the storage. Check headroom, the aircon position and window sills against the deck height first.
Can a tatami platform be removed later?
It is built-in joinery fixed to the room, so removal is possible but the boards are rarely reusable elsewhere.
Which board should I use?
A moisture-resistant plywood carcass where the deck carries storage or meets an outside or bathroom wall; melamine or laminate faces are fine in a dry room.
