Bought a bigger TV, or about to? How to size the console around the screen: length, height, depth and what it costs.

The right TV cabinet size starts from the TV's real width, not its diagonal: a console should be clearly wider than the screen, low enough that the screen centre sits near seated eye level, and deep enough for your media box, soundbar and cables. A 16:9 screen is about 0.87 times its diagonal wide, so a 55-inch, 65-inch or 75-inch TV each needs a longer console than the last. Because custom consoles are priced per foot run, the length you choose sets the price: ClickBina's TV cabinet guide puts a floating or low console at RM280 – RM600 per foot run (indicative 2026, Klang Valley).
TVs are sold by their diagonal, but a cabinet is drawn in width, height and depth. A 65-inch TV is not that length of anything you can put a tape measure against on the wall; it is the corner-to-corner length of the lit screen. The figures that matter for the cabinet are the width of the TV body, the width between its stand feet if it will sit on the cabinet, and the depth of the stand.
This page is only about sizing. What a console costs per foot, what a floating cabinet can hang from and how cables are routed are covered in ClickBina's TV cabinet cost guide, and the styles are in the TV cabinet design gallery. Read those once the size is settled.
| Measurement | Where to find it | What it decides |
|---|---|---|
| TV width without stand | The spec sheet or the box, usually in millimetres | Minimum console length and the TV niche width |
| TV height without stand | Spec sheet | Mounting height and any upper shelf or niche |
| Stand feet span (if the TV sits on the cabinet) | Spec sheet, or measure the feet | The console top must be wider than this |
| Stand depth | Spec sheet | The minimum depth of the console top |
| Soundbar length and height | Its own spec sheet | Whether it fits in front of the TV feet or in an open shelf |
| Deepest device (media box, console, router) | Measure it with the cables plugged in | The internal depth of the device shelf |
| Wall width and sockets | Tape measure on site | The maximum console length and where cut-outs go |
Use the dimensions of the TV you will own for the next few years, not the one you have now. ClickBina's cost guide lists buying the console before deciding the TV size as a common mistake; the console follows the screen.
Almost every TV sold today has a 16:9 screen. For that shape, the screen width is about 0.87 times the diagonal and the screen height about 0.49 times the diagonal. That is simple geometry, and it matches the worked example that SMPTE uses and ClickBina's cost guide quotes: a 60-inch 16:9 screen is 1.33 m wide and 0.75 m high.
The body of the TV adds a thin bezel, so the spec-sheet width is a little more than the screen width. Use the rule to compare sizes in a shop; use the spec sheet for the drawing.
| TV class | Screen width (approx.) | What it usually means for the console |
|---|---|---|
| 55-inch | 55 × 0.87 | Fits a short console in most condo living rooms |
| 65-inch | 65 × 0.87 | Needs a longer console; check the stand feet span if it sits on top |
| 75-inch | 75 × 0.87 | Long console or a full-wall unit; plan the wall width first |
| 85-inch and up | 85 × 0.87 | Usually wall-mounted over a long console or built into a feature wall |
A console looks right when it is visibly wider than the TV on both sides, so the screen reads as sitting on or above a base rather than overhanging it. Two hard limits apply: the console must be at least as wide as the stand feet span if the TV stands on it, and it must leave walking space and door swings clear at both ends.
The cost guide's typical floating console is 6 to 8 feet long. Convert the TV width from centimetres to feet (divide by about 30.5) and compare it with the wall before choosing a length.
ClickBina's design gallery gives the rule that matters: keep the screen centre close to seated eye level. A tall console with a TV standing on top can push the screen too high, and a wall-mounted TV fixed to line up with a feature wall often ends up higher still.
Depth is set by what lives inside the cabinet, not by the TV. A slim console looks light but may not close over a media box with its cables plugged in. Measure the deepest device with its plugs in place, then allow room behind it for the cables to bend and for air to move; boxes, routers and game consoles give off heat.
ClickBina's TV, Astro and satellite points guide explains where the TV, data and power points should sit relative to the screen and the cabinet, which affects how much depth the cable route needs.
The cabinet size and the seating distance go together. ClickBina's living room design guide puts a comfortable distance between the TV wall and the sofa at typically 2.5 to 4 metres depending on TV size. The cost guide adds the standards view: SMPTE's 60-inch example gives an optimal viewing distance of 2.25 m to 2.4 m.
If the sofa sits much further back than that, a bigger screen will help more than a bigger console. If it sits closer, a very large TV on a long console can dominate a small condo living room.
Custom consoles are priced per foot run, the length along the wall, so every foot you add for a bigger TV adds to the bill. These figures are from ClickBina's TV cabinet cost guide (indicative 2026, Klang Valley):
| Item | Indicative price | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Floating or low TV console, per foot run | RM280 – RM600 per ft run | Laminate to premium finish |
| Typical 6–8 ft floating TV console | RM1,800 – RM4,800 | Console only |
| 8 ft console at the per-foot rate | RM2,240 – RM4,800 | Worked example in the cost guide |
