What a custom display cabinet costs in KL and Selangor — and why no Malaysian rule covers the glass in it, so the specification has to come from you.

A display cabinet is custom carpentry with glass in it, so it is quoted per foot run like any other cabinet run — the horizontal length measured along the wall, in feet, with the depth and height set by the drawing. The 2026 Klang Valley band is RM500 – RM750 per foot run (market estimate 2026, indicative Klang Valley), which is the same construction cost as a glass-door showcase unit in a kitchen.

A glass door needs a frame or a bore, a hinge that grips glass rather than board, and a much lower tolerance for error, because a glass door that binds cannot simply be planed. That is where the extra per foot goes.
Three things are outside the rate and belong on the quote as their own lines: the lighting and its driver, the electrical point that feeds it, and the lock if you want one. If the quote is a single per-foot figure with no exclusions written down, ask for them in writing before paying a deposit — the same discipline set out in the hidden charges in a cabinet quote.
This is the part of the subject that nobody writes down, so here it is plainly. No Malaysian standard or by-law governs glass in furniture. Malaysia regulates safety glass in buildings (MS 1498 ‘Safety glass in building - Specification’ and the MS 2753 ‘Use of glass in building - Code of Practice’ series). The Uniform Building By-Laws 1984 contain no human-impact glazing by-law at all.
And even where a Malaysian Standard does exist, it is not automatically law. Malaysian Standards are voluntary unless a regulatory authority makes them mandatory by regulation or by-law, and compliance does not itself confer immunity from legal obligations. So a contractor who tells you the glass in your display cabinet “must be tempered by Malaysian standard” is not quoting anything that exists. Nothing compels it. If you want toughened glass, you have to write it into the quotation yourself.
It is not only a Malaysian gap, either. The US federal architectural glazing rule (16 CFR Part 1201) covers a closed list of six architectural products — storm/combination doors, doors, bathtub doors and enclosures, shower doors and enclosures, and sliding patio doors. Furniture, shelving and cabinets are absent. That confirmation comes from furniture being absent from a closed list rather than from an express exclusion — and in any case the US rule has no force here. It is quoted only to show that the gap is normal rather than a Malaysian oversight.
The nearest thing to a furniture-glass requirement anywhere is European, and it is narrower than it is usually made to sound. The domestic storage furniture standard EN 14749 imposes an impact-resistance test on non-backed glass in external vertical surfaces such as doors, and only where the glass area is at least 0.1 square metres, the smallest dimension is at least 200 mm, or any part is less than 900 mm above the floor. It is a performance test, not a blanket ‘must be toughened’ material requirement. That description comes from SATRA, a testing house, rather than from the standard itself: BS EN 14749:2016+A1:2022 is paywalled and its clause text was not read for this page, so we quote no clause numbers and no drop heights. The correction still matters, because the standard is widely cited online as though it simply mandates safety glass in cabinets. It does not — and it is not enforced in Malaysia either way.
So why specify toughened glass at all? Because of what the material does when it fails, not because of what a rule says. Ordinary annealed glass breaks into dagger-like shards and is often not suitable for use in furniture. That is the honest argument, it does not depend on any standard, and it is the one to put to your carpenter.
What to write into the quotation. Since nothing is implied by law, everything has to be written:

Three constructions dominate, and they behave differently in a Malaysian home:

For most Malaysian homes the framed door is the sensible default and the frameless door is the upgrade worth paying for when the cabinet is a centrepiece. Full-glass carcasses look superb and are genuinely demanding: every joint is a silicone or a patch fitting, and there is nowhere to hide a cable.
Lighting is what separates a display cabinet from a cupboard with glass doors, and it is the part most often left off the quote. Four decisions:
Choose the light colour by what is on display — a warmer light flatters timber, ceramics and whisky, a more neutral light is truer for artwork and colour-critical objects. Lighting design covers the room-level decisions, and any new circuit or point is electrical work with its own scope.
Dust is the reason most people want a display cabinet rather than open shelving, and Malaysian homes generate plenty of it — open windows, ceiling fans, construction next door and a roadside frontage all contribute. Sealing is a detail, not a product:
The trade-off is honest and worth stating: the better the seal, the more the cabinet traps heat and humidity. In a Malaysian home that argues for silica gel sachets replaced periodically inside a well-sealed cabinet, rather than for leaving it leaky.
This is where display cabinets actually fail, and it is entirely predictable. The variable that matters most is not thickness — it is the unsupported span between the shelf supports.
The published permissible loads for an annealed glass shelf on two-sided support, in pounds per square foot, by the distance between supports:

Toughened glass multiplies those permissible loads by four. Two caveats travel with the table and both are important. It comes from an industry technical bulletin that carries no publisher name, author or date, so treat it as a fabricator’s guidance rather than a manufacturer standard. And it is a breakage-probability criterion, not a deflection limit — a shelf that passes it can still visibly sag, and no source publishes a sag limit for a glass shelf at all.
The most common question is about 6 mm glass, and the honest answer is a conversion. There is no 6 mm row; the nearest is 1/4 in (6.35 mm), which is thicker than 6 mm. Converted to metric, the 1/4 in row gives roughly 356 kg/m² at 305 mm span, 78 at 610 mm, 24 at 914 mm, 10 at 1219 mm and zero at 1524 mm. So annealed glass around 6 mm is already marginal by about 900 mm of unsupported span and is rated at zero by 1.5 m. Capacity scales with thickness squared, so a true 6.0 mm shelf is roughly a tenth weaker again than that row — and both of those are our arithmetic on the published figures, not the source’s own wording.
The difference between the two materials has a separate and cleaner source, and its reference table names shelves explicitly. For long-term load (self-weight, water, shelves) the allowable stress is 7 N/mm² for annealed glass and 35 N/mm² for thermally toughened — a 5:1 ratio. That five-to-one ratio is the real reason to toughen a shelf that will hold anything heavy for years, and it is a different quantity from the span table above — do not multiply the two together.
What to do with all of this. Add a shelf support in the middle rather than buying thicker glass: halving the span buys you far more than adding a few millimetres. Specify toughened. And keep the heavy objects on the shortest spans, at the bottom.
Be clear-eyed about what a display cabinet lock is for. A cam lock or a glass-door lock keeps a cabinet closed against children, guests and casual curiosity. It does not secure valuables — the door is glass, and anyone determined enough to take the contents does not need the key. If the cabinet holds genuinely valuable items, the lock is a convenience and the real protection is elsewhere: a safe for the few items that justify it, a household inventory with photographs for insurance, and, if the room warrants it, a camera covering the approach rather than the cabinet. Two practical points. Keyed-alike locks across several doors save a great deal of irritation and cost nothing extra if asked for at order time. And a lock added later to a frameless glass door usually means drilling the pane — which cannot be done to toughened glass after it has been toughened, so it has to be decided before the glass is ordered.
The back panel does more work than people expect, because it is the surface behind everything on display.
Match the carcass finish to the rest of the room rather than to the cabinet’s own style: a display cabinet is furniture, and it reads best when its finish belongs to the joinery around it. Cabinet material compares the boards, and living room design covers how the piece sits in the room.

The two hinge lines are alternatives, not a running total. A restrained build lands at roughly RM2,530 – RM3,830, and the same cabinet on European soft-close hardware at roughly RM2,600 – RM3,960. The hardware assumption behind those per-foot upgrade figures is stated plainly: hardware tier adds the per-hinge upgrade cost over a standard hinge, assuming about 1.3 hinges per foot run (one 18-inch door on two hinges).
Deliberately not in that table, because they are separate lines every quote should show: the LED strip and its driver, the electrical point that feeds them, the upgrade from annealed to toughened glass if the quote does not already say toughened, the locks, and any mirror backing. Ask for each as its own figure. A single blended number is impossible to compare against a second contractor’s.
Malaysian conditions are hard on a sealed glass box, and placement decides most of it.
If the cabinet is going into a wet or semi-outdoor position — a yard, a covered balcony, a wet kitchen — a display cabinet is the wrong piece of furniture, and the carcass material conversation changes entirely.
