Tukang Besi: Home Welding & Metalwork
Grilles, Gates, Railings, Rust & Cost (2026)

The metal jobs on a Malaysian house, the materials that suit them, and what a good quote should list.

Welding arc and sparks on a mild steel gate panel clamped on a workshop bench

A tukang besi is the metalworker and welder behind most of the steel on a Malaysian house: window grilles, grille doors, gates, fences, railings, awning frames and the repairs that keep them working. Most items are fabricated in a workshop and fixed on site; mild steel is the cheapest and must be protected from rust, aluminium and stainless steel cost more but rust less. ClickBina's guides put a mild steel grille door at RM100 – RM160 per sq ft and a window grille at RM80 – RM130 per sq ft, installed (indicative 2026, Klang Valley). A site visit is RM150, waived if you go ahead.

What a tukang besi does on a house

JobUsual materialWhat to watch
Window grillesMild steel, sometimes aluminiumAt least one openable panel with a lock for escape
Grille doors and security gatesMild steel, aluminium or stainlessHinges, lock box and the bottom rail
Main gates, swing or slidingMild steel or aluminiumWeight on the hinges and pillar; motor fitting later
Fences and railingsMild steel, aluminium or stainlessPost footings and where water collects
Awning and car porch framesMild steel or galvanised steelWall fixings and how the roof sheet is flashed
Staircase and balcony railingsMild steel or stainlessFixings into the slab and a firm handrail
Brackets and framesGalvanised or mild steelAircon ledges, water tank stands, shelf frames

Many workshops do all of these. Some specialise, for example in gates and autogates, in stainless steel, or in laser-cut decorative panels. For a large or decorative job, ask to see a sample panel or finished work in the same design; the main gate design guide makes the same point.

Mild steel, aluminium or stainless steel?

MaterialStrength and costRust
Mild steelStrong, cheapest, easy to cut and weldRusts wherever the coating is damaged or thin
AluminiumLighter, costs moreDoes not rust; can corrode at fixings and cut edges
Stainless steelStrong, highest cost, harder to weldResists rust; grade matters, and cheap grades can stain

The gate materials guide compares the three for gates in detail. If you choose stainless, the stainless steel grades guide explains why a cheap grade can show brown spots within months near the coast or a pool.

Workshop fabrication or welding on site?

Most grilles, gates and railings are measured on site, made in the workshop, then brought back and fixed. Workshop welding is cleaner and better controlled, and the item can be coated before it arrives. Some work has to be welded on site: joining an item to existing steel, repairing a cracked hinge, or fitting a frame that could not be carried in whole.

Welding and grinding on site throw sparks and make noise. Cars, curtains, plants and anything flammable nearby should be moved or covered, a fire extinguisher should be close, and the area checked after the work stops. In a condo, hot work and noisy work usually need management approval and fall within set working hours.

Coatings and rust protection

Mild steel lasts as long as its coating. Hot-dip galvanising gives the longest protection; a zinc-rich or rust-inhibiting primer under good paint is the common site finish; powder coating in the workshop gives an even, hard finish but can be damaged by site welding and drilling. Rust almost always starts where the coating is thinnest or broken: welds, cut ends, drilled holes, hinges, the lock box and the bottom rail where water sits.

The rusty grille and gate guide covers when rust can be treated and repainted and when a section needs cutting out and new steel welding in. Touch up any site weld straight away; a bare weld on a new gate is the first place rust shows.

Repair or replace?

A lot of tukang besi work is repair. Gates that sag or drag, hinges that crack, bottom rails rusted through and grilles loosened from the wall can usually be fixed if the rest of the frame is sound. The sagging gate guide explains how to tell a worn hinge from a leaning pillar, which is a different repair. If rust has eaten into several members, or the design no longer suits the house, replacement is often better value than repeated patching.

Grilles, escape and security

Grilles keep intruders out but must not trap you in. Every room with grilles should have at least one openable panel with a lock that everyone in the house can open quickly in a fire, and the key should be kept near it. For balconies and high windows where the concern is children or pets rather than intruders, an invisible grille keeps the view. For shopfronts and back doors, the trellis and retractable grille guide compares the folding options.

The grille door price guide gives aluminium and stainless steel rates beside mild steel, and works through a full-size door. For gates, the gate leaves are only part of the cost; posts, the motor and the track can double it.

What a good metalwork quote lists

  • Material and section sizes, not just “mild steel”.
  • The coating: galvanised, primer and paint, or powder coating, and the colour.
  • Design, with a sketch or a sample, including any laser-cut or decorative panels.
  • Fixing method: bolts, anchors or welding to existing steel, and making good the wall.
  • Locks, hinges, wheels or tracks, and who supplies them.
  • Removal and disposal of the old item, and site cleaning after grinding.

Common metalwork mistakes

  • Grilles on every window with no openable escape panel.
  • Site welds left bare after installation, so rust starts in the first rainy season.
  • A heavy new gate hung on an old pillar that was never checked.
  • Welding next to a parked car, curtains or plants without covering them.
  • Choosing the cheapest stainless grade for a coastal or poolside railing.

Common Questions

What does a tukang besi do?
A tukang besi is a metalworker and welder: window grilles, grille doors, gates, fences, railings, awning frames, brackets and repairs to all of these.
How much does a window grille cost in Malaysia?
ClickBina's guides put a powder-coated mild steel window grille at RM80 – RM130 per sq ft installed (indicative 2026, Klang Valley).
Is mild steel or aluminium better for a gate?
Mild steel is stronger for the price but must be kept painted; aluminium is lighter and does not rust but costs more.
Can a rusty gate be repaired instead of replaced?
Often yes, if the rust is local: cut out the bad section, weld in new steel and repaint. Widespread rust usually means replacement.
Is welding on site safe near my car and house?
Only with precautions: move or cover cars, curtains and plants, keep an extinguisher nearby, and check the area after work stops.
Do I need permission for metalwork in a condo?
Usually yes. Grilles, gates and railings change what the building looks like, and hot work needs management approval and set hours.
Why do new grilles rust at the welds first?
Welds, cut ends and drilled holes are where the coating is thinnest or burnt off. Touch them up straight after installation.
