Removing Window & Door Grilles
Holes, Paint & Rules (2026)

Take old grilles out without rusty stubs, leaking holes, a patchy wall or an unsafe window, and choose what goes in their place.

Window reveal with fixing holes and ground-down stubs after an old steel grille was removed

Removing a grille is quick; doing it without leaving rusty stubs, open holes that leak, a patchy wall or an unsafe window takes planning. Check the building rules first (in a condo the grille is part of the facade), think about security and children at high windows, and decide what goes in its place before anything is cut. Good removal unbolts or cuts at the fixings, grinds stubs flush, fills and seals every hole, and repaints the patched area. On ClickBina's guides a new powder-coated mild steel window grille is RM80 – RM130 per sq ft installed and a condo repaint touch-up RM400 – RM900 (indicative 2026, Klang Valley).

Why owners remove grilles

  • Replacing them with a new design, an invisible grille or a retractable trellis.
  • Renovating: new windows, a wider opening or a new facade often means the old grilles have to come off first.
  • Rust: grilles rusted at the welds and fixings that are not worth treating.
  • Light, view and escape: fixed grilles that darken rooms and block a way out in a fire.
  • Selling or letting: dated grilles that make a house look older than it is.

Removing grilles is reversible in theory but rarely cheap to reverse, so it is worth being sure about the reasons and the replacement before the cutting starts.

Think it through before removing

QuestionWhy it mattersWhat to do
Is the window reachable from outside?Ground-floor, porch-roof and back-lane windows are the usual entry pointsKeep or replace grilles there; remove only where risk is low
Are there young children or pets?Upper windows and balconies without grilles are a fall riskFit an invisible grille or window restrictors instead
Is it a condo or strata building?Grilles are part of the facade and covered by house rulesGet written management approval first
Is the grille blocking a fire escape?Fixed bedroom grilles can trap peopleReplace with an openable grille rather than nothing
Is the window frame sound?Removing fixings can disturb old frames and sealantPlan the frame repair or replacement in the same job

Our burglar-proofing checklist helps judge which openings on a landed house really need bars.

Condos and strata: approval first

In a strata building, external grille designs and balcony railings are part of the common facade. Our strata renovation rules guide lists changing window grille designs among the external changes that need management approval. Removing a grille, especially a balcony grille, changes the look from outside, so ask the management office in writing, follow its working hours and lift booking rules, and keep the approval. Some buildings require a standard design to go back in.

How grilles are fixed

How a grille comes off depends on how it went on. Look at the edges before anyone quotes:

  • Bolted into concrete or brick through lugs on the frame: the cleanest to remove; bolts are undone or cut, and the holes filled.
  • Built into the wall with bar ends cast into the reveal: the bars are cut flush and the stubs ground down and sealed against rust.
  • Screwed or riveted to an aluminium window frame: removal leaves holes in the frame itself, which must be sealed.
  • Welded to a steel door frame or gate: cut at the weld and the frame ground smooth and painted.

How removal is done properly

  1. Protect the glass, window frames, floor and furniture: grinding throws hot sparks that pit glass and burn finishes.
  2. Undo the fixings where possible; cut only what cannot be unbolted.
  3. Support the grille while the last fixings come out; a full-height door grille is heavy.
  4. Grind every stub and bolt flush with or below the wall surface.
  5. Treat exposed steel left in the wall with a rust-inhibiting primer before it is covered.
  6. Take the old steel away; it should not be left in the yard or the common corridor.

Upper-floor grilles may need a ladder or scaffold outside, which affects the price and, in a condo, the approval. Our rusty grille guide explains why anchor points are where rust starts, which is why stubs must be treated, not just painted over.

Making good the wall

Once the grille is off, the reveal shows every fixing hole, the outline where paint stopped at the grille frame, and often old rust stains. Fill the holes with a suitable filler or mortar, sand them flush, prime and repaint. The patched area rarely matches old paint exactly, so plan on repainting the whole reveal or the wall panel around the window rather than dabbing over each hole.

For bigger patches, the wall patching guide explains how patched plaster is brought back to a smooth finish before painting.

Holes that let water in

The hidden risk of grille removal is water. Fixing holes through an outside wall, a window sill or an aluminium frame become paths for rain. A hole drilled through the frame or the sealant line may not leak until the next storm, and then shows as a damp patch under the window. Every hole on the weather side must be sealed with an outdoor-grade sealant or filler, and any frame sealant disturbed during removal renewed. Our window leak guide covers re-sealing a frame properly.

What to fit instead

OptionSuitsKeep in mind
NothingLow-risk upper windows with no children or petsSecurity and fall risk move to the window lock alone
Invisible grilleHigh windows and balconies where fall protection mattersFall protection, not burglar protection
Retractable trellis grilleDoors and wide openings used every dayFolds away; needs a clean track
New openable grilleBedrooms that need security and a way outOpenable panel with a lock adds cost
Safety or security filmGlass that should hold together when brokenSlows entry; does not stop it

Our invisible grille guide, trellis grille guide and safety film guide cover each option in detail.

Common Questions

Can I remove the grilles from my condo windows?
Only with the management's written approval. Grilles are part of the facade, and some buildings require a standard design to remain or go back in.
Will removing grilles leave holes in the wall?
Yes. Every fixing leaves a hole or a stub. They should be filled, sealed on the weather side and repainted, ideally across the whole reveal so the patch does not show.
Why does my window leak after the grille was removed?
Fixing holes through the frame, sill or sealant line were left open. Seal every hole with an outdoor-grade sealant and renew any disturbed frame sealant.
Is it safe to remove grilles from upstairs windows?
It depends on access from outside and who lives in the house. With young children or pets, fit an invisible grille or window restrictors rather than leaving the window bare.
Should the old steel stubs be cut flush?
Yes, ground flush or below the surface and primed against rust. Stubs left proud rust and stain the wall.
What can replace a fixed grille?
An openable grille for bedrooms, an invisible grille for fall protection, a retractable trellis for doors, or safety film on the glass.
How much does a new window grille cost if I change my mind?
ClickBina's rusty grille guide lists a new powder-coated mild steel window grille at RM80–RM130 per sq ft installed (indicative 2026, Klang Valley).
