Need a wide opening that folds fully open by day and locks at night? Here is how trellis grilles work and what to check before ordering.

A trellis grille is a folding, accordion-style security grille that collapses to one or both sides of an opening, so a wide sliding door or shop front can be left fully open by day and locked behind a steel lattice at night. It suits openings too wide for a swing gate and places where a roller shutter would block light and air. Its weak points are the tracks, the many joints and the lock. ClickBina's grille guides price folding grilles after measuring; for comparison, a mild steel sliding door grille is listed at RM100 – RM160 per sq ft (indicative 2026, Klang Valley).
“Trellis”, “collapsible gate”, “accordion grille” and “retractable grille” all describe the same thing: a grille made of vertical bars joined by crossing, pivoting links, so the whole gate folds up like a concertina. Pulled closed, it forms a diamond lattice across the opening; pushed open, it stacks into a narrow bundle at the side. In Malay it is often called a grill lipat.
It is one of the four common grille door types listed in ClickBina's grille door price guide, alongside swing, sliding and mesh grilles. Trellis grilles earn their place where the opening is wide and you want it clear when open.
| Option | How it opens | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trellis (folding) grille | Folds to one or both sides | Very wide sliding doors and shop fronts that must open fully | Many joints to wear; tracks collect dirt |
| Sliding grille door | One or more panels slide on a track | Wide doors next to a wall with room to park the panel | Needs wall space beside the opening |
| Swing grille door | Opens on hinges | Single doors with room for the leaf | Needs clear space to swing |
| Roller shutter | Rolls up into a box above | Shops that want the front fully closed | Blocks light and air when down unless it is a grille type |
| Mesh-infill grille | Swing or sliding | Doors where a hand could reach the lock | Less airflow and view |
For shop frontages, our shopfront options guide compares glass fronts, folding doors and roller shutters.
In homes, trellis grilles are most often fitted behind wide sliding glass doors to a patio, garden or balcony, and at kitchen or back doors facing a back lane. Folded away, they leave the glass door clear; closed, they let you keep the glass open for air at night with the house still locked.
Shops use trellis grilles where they want the frontage open all day and a see-through security layer at night, so the display stays visible after closing. They are also common inside malls and arcades between units, and in front of glass shopfronts as a second line of security. Heavy daily use is the challenge: a shop grille is opened and closed twice a day, every day, so wheels, pivots and tracks wear much faster than on a house.
Landlords and malls often set rules for shutters and grilles on frontages, so check them before ordering. Our commercial renovation permit guide covers approvals.
Most trellis grilles run on a top track, a bottom track, or both. A top-hung grille keeps the floor clear, which matters for wheelchairs, trolleys and tripping, but needs a strong head to hang from. A bottom track carries the weight well but collects sand, leaves and water, and can be a trip hazard if it stands proud of the floor. Ask which design is proposed, how the track is fixed and whether it can be recessed into the floor.
The material choices are the same as for other grilles. ClickBina's grille guides set out the trade-off: powder-coated mild steel is the cheapest and still strong, but rusts at the welds once the coating chips, and needs a full repaint every 5–8 years; aluminium does not rust and is lighter, which helps a folding gate run smoothly, with hinges and locks oiled every 1–2 years; stainless steel is the premium, low-maintenance choice. Near the coast, aluminium or stainless steel is the safer pick.
A trellis grille across a door is also across your escape route. Keep the key hanging near the grille on the inside, where an adult can reach it in the dark but a person outside cannot, and make sure at least one exit can be opened quickly from inside. ClickBina's grille door guide explains the same rule for every grille door in the house.
ClickBina's grille guides quote folding grilles after measuring, because the width, height, stacking and tracks vary so much. These published rates (indicative 2026, Klang Valley) for related grille types are reference points, not a trellis price.
