Grille Door Price Malaysia
Sliding, Swing, Folding & Mesh by Material (2026)

Pricing a new grille for the front door, the back door or the kitchen? Here are the per-sq-ft and per-door prices by material, which type suits which door, and what a proper quotation lists.

Black steel swing grille door with fine mesh panels and a lock, closed in front of a timber main door

A grille door in Malaysia costs RM100 – RM160 per sq ft for a mild steel sliding or back-door grille and RM120 – RM180 per sq ft for a main-door security gate, supplied and installed (indicative Klang Valley ranges for 2026). For a full-height 3 ft × 7 ft door (21 sq ft) that works out at RM2,100 – RM3,360 for a back or kitchen door and RM2,520 – RM3,780 for the front main door in mild steel. Aluminium costs more per sq ft, and stainless steel (SS304) the most. Folding and mesh-infill grille doors are quoted after measuring. WhatsApp ClickBina photos of the door for a free quote.

What a grille door is, and the four common types

A grille door is the metal gate fitted in front of, or instead of, a solid door. On most Klang Valley terrace houses there are two at the main entrance: the solid front door, and a grille door outside it that lets air and light in while the house stays locked. Back doors and kitchen doors usually get one too, because they face the back lane or the service yard. The same product is sold as a door grille, grill door, security gate or, in Malay, grill pintu or pintu pagar. They come in four common types:

  • Swing (hinged) grille door. Opens like a normal door on hinges. The usual choice for a back door or a single front door.
  • Sliding grille door. Runs on a track across the opening. It suits wide openings, porches and doors where there is no room for a leaf to swing.
  • Folding (accordion) grille door. Collapses to one or both sides, so it clears nearly the full width. It is used on very wide openings and on shop fronts.
  • Mesh grille door. A swing or sliding grille with a welded steel mesh infill instead of open bars, so a hand cannot reach through to the lock or the door behind.

This guide covers doors. For window grilles, balcony railings and whole-house packages, our metal grille cost guide has the full table. For the solid security door behind the grille, see the security door cost guide.

Grille door price per sq ft by material (2026)

Grille doors are priced per square foot of the opening, by material. Door grilles cost more per square foot than window grilles, because they carry hinges or a track and a lock, and the frame has to take being opened and slammed every day. These are the published rates from our metal grille cost guide (indicative Klang Valley ranges for 2026, supplied and installed):

The rate you are quoted will sit higher in the range for a heavier section, a decorative pattern, a wide or tall opening, or a door that needs extra fixing work. A plain straight-bar or diamond design sits at the bottom of the range.

What one grille door costs: front, back and kitchen doors

Most people want the price for one door, not a rate. A standard full-height door opening on a terrace house is about 3 ft × 7 ft, or 21 sq ft. At the rates above, one grille door costs:

Door (3 ft × 7 ft, 21 sq ft)Mild steelAluminium
Front main door (full height)RM2,520 – RM3,780RM3,780 – RM5,880
Back door / kitchen doorRM2,100 – RM3,360RM3,150 – RM4,830

In the worked example in the same guide, a powder-coated mild steel sliding main-door security gate with a lock comes to RM2,800, and a swing back-door security gate with a lock comes to RM2,200. A wider opening, a double-leaf gate or a porch gate is priced on its own area. Measure the width and height of the opening and multiply by the rate to check a quote.

Sliding, swing, folding or mesh: which type suits which door

The right type depends on how wide the opening is, how much room there is in front of it and what you are protecting against:

TypeBest forWatch out for
Swing (hinged)Back doors, kitchen doors and single front doors with space for the leaf to openNeeds clear space to swing; hinges must be fixed into concrete or a steel frame
SlidingWide front doors, porches and doors next to a wall with no swing spaceThe track collects dirt and rainwater, so keep it clean; the lock sits at the meeting edge
Folding (accordion)Very wide openings and shop fronts that must open fullyMore moving joints to wear; quoted after measuring, with no published rate on this site
Mesh-infill (swing or sliding)Doors where a hand could reach through the bars to the lock or a windowLess airflow and view than open bars; also quoted after measuring

If the aim is to keep mosquitoes out rather than intruders, you want an insect screen, which is a different, lighter product. See the mosquito net and insect screen guide.

Mild steel, aluminium or stainless steel

Material is the biggest single driver of the price. Our metal grille guide sets out the trade-off:

  • Mild steel, powder-coated. The cheapest and still the most common. It is strong, but once the coating chips, rust starts at the welds and spreads quickly in Malaysian humidity. Plan to touch it up, and repaint fully every 5–8 years.
  • Aluminium. Costs about 50–80% more than mild steel, but it does not rust, and it is much lighter, which helps a sliding door run smoothly. Wipe it down and oil the hinges and locks every 1–2 years.
  • Stainless steel (SS304). Costs about 120–180% more than mild steel. It is the premium, low-maintenance choice for a door that is on show. Near the sea, the guide recommends SS316 instead.

For homes near the coast, such as Port Klang, Klang and Sepang, choose aluminium or stainless steel over mild steel. A mild steel door that faces the rain on a porch will need the most care.

Locks: where most grille doors are weakest

A strong grille with a weak lock is a weak door. Door grilles cost more than window grilles mostly because of the opening mechanism and the lock. Our grille guide notes that an openable grille with a lock adds RM200 – RM600 per unit for the mechanism. What to check:

  • Avoid a padlock as the main lock. Padlocks on grille gates are easy to cut with bolt cutters. A proper lock set into the gate frame is harder to attack.
  • Put the lock where a hand cannot reach it. On an open-bar door, someone outside can reach through to the inside handle. A mesh panel around the lock stops that.
  • Check the keeper side. The part the bolt locks into must be fixed into concrete or a steel frame, not plaster.
  • Ask about spare keys and replacement cylinders before you sign, especially for a less common lock brand.

If you are adding a digital lock to the solid door behind the grille, the security door guide linked above covers digital lock prices. If an existing lock has failed, see lock replacement.

Fire safety: never lock yourself in

A grille door is also the way out in a fire. Many homes have the front grille, the back grille and every window grille locked at night, with the keys in a drawer somewhere. That is the arrangement that traps people. A few simple rules:

  1. Keep the key for each grille door hanging near it on the inside, where an adult can reach it in the dark and a child or a person outside cannot.
  2. Make sure at least one grille door opens from the inside without a hunt for keys, for example with a thumb-turn lock on the inside face, set behind a mesh lock panel so a hand from outside cannot reach it.
  3. Do not block the back door. It is the second way out of most terrace houses.
  4. Check with your building management before fitting a lockable grille across a condo unit door, because corridors are escape routes too.

For window grilles, make sure at least one window in each bedroom has an openable panel. Our invisible grille guide explains how cable grilles handle escape.

Condo and apartment grille doors: get approval first

In a strata building, what you fit outside your unit door affects the look of the building and the shared corridor. Our strata renovation rules guide lists changing external grille designs among the changes that need management approval. Before ordering a grille door for a condo or apartment:

  • Read the house rules or by-laws. Many buildings set an approved grille design and colour for unit entrances.
  • Apply to the management office (JMB or MC) with a drawing of the design, the colour and how it will be fixed.
  • Wait for approval in writing before any fabrication starts, and keep it.
  • Follow the renovation rules on working hours, lift booking and any renovation deposit.

What a grille door quotation should list

Two quotes are only comparable if they describe the same door. Ask for each of these in writing:

Line on the quoteWhy it matters
Opening size and area in sq ftThe rate is per sq ft, so the area decides the total
Material and section sizeMild steel, aluminium or SS304, and how thick the frame and bars are
Type: swing, sliding, folding, single or double leafEach has different hardware and fixing work
DesignPlain bar and diamond sit at the base rate; ornamental work costs more
Finish and colourPowder coat colour, and whether the steel is primed against rust first
Lock and hinges or trackBrand and type of lock, and how many keys are supplied
Fixing methodInto concrete, a steel frame or the door frame; never just plaster
Removing the old grilleTaking out an old gate and making good the holes is extra work

How long it takes: measure, fabricate, install

  1. Photos on WhatsApp. Send one photo of the whole door opening and one close-up of the frame edge, with rough measurements.
  2. Measure on site. The opening is measured and the fixing surface checked. A site visit is RM150, waived if you go ahead.
  3. Fabrication. Standard window and door grilles are usually made in 5–10 working days, plus time for powder coating. Complex designs take longer.
  4. Installation. A door or two usually goes in within 1–2 days on site, including the lock, adjustment and touching up the drill points.

Rust, care and when to repaint

Grille doors are handled and slammed every day and rained on at the porch, so they wear faster than window grilles. Check a mild steel door once a year, especially at the welds, the hinges and the bottom rail, and treat any rust spot straight away with a rust-inhibiting primer before it spreads. Oil hinges, tracks and locks. On a sliding door, keep the track clear of sand and leaves, and make sure rainwater can drain out of it.

If an existing grille door is rusty but still sound, repainting it can buy several years. If the welds or the bottom rail have rusted through, or the gate drops and drags, replacing it is usually the better money.

Sources & methodology

How we estimated prices: where this guide gives renovation or service price ranges, those RM figures are typical Klang Valley market ranges for 2026, compiled from contractor quotations and supplier price lists. They are not official or fixed rates — the final price depends on your site, so confirm it on site before you commit. Every grille rate on this page is quoted unchanged from our metal grille cost guide, so the two guides agree. Folding and mesh-infill grille doors have no published rate and are quoted after measuring.

Common Questions

How much does a grille door cost in Malaysia?
A mild steel sliding or back-door grille costs RM100 – RM160 per sq ft, and a main-door security gate RM120 – RM180 per sq ft, installed. For a 3 ft × 7 ft door that is RM2,100 – RM3,360 for a back or kitchen door and RM2,520 – RM3,780 for the front main door. Aluminium and stainless steel cost more.
Is a sliding or a swing grille door better?
A swing door suits a single door with room for the leaf to open, and it is simple to lock well. A sliding door suits wide openings and tight spaces, but its track needs to be kept clean and able to drain. In the worked example in our grille guide, a sliding main-door gate with a lock is RM2,800 and a swing back-door gate with a lock is RM2,200.
Should I choose an aluminium or a mild steel grille door?
Mild steel is cheaper and strong, but it rusts once the coating chips. Aluminium costs about 50–80% more but does not rust and is lighter, which helps sliding doors. Near the coast, choose aluminium or stainless steel.
How much does a folding grille door cost?
There is no published rate for folding (accordion) grille doors on this site, because the price depends on the width, the number of folds and the track. It is quoted after measuring. Send photos and rough measurements on WhatsApp for a quote.
What is a mesh grille door?
It is a swing or sliding grille door with a welded steel mesh infill instead of open bars, so nobody can reach through to the lock or the door behind. It gives less airflow and view than open bars. It is quoted after measuring. For keeping insects out, an insect screen door is a different, lighter product.
Do I need approval to install a grille door in a condo?
Usually yes. Changes to external grille designs need management approval in a strata building, and many condos set an approved design and colour for unit doors. Apply to the JMB or MC with a drawing and wait for written approval before fabrication starts.
How long does it take to make and install a grille door?
Standard door grilles are usually fabricated in 5–10 working days, plus powder coating, and installed in 1–2 days on site. Complex or decorative designs take longer.
