Fabrication is everything that happens between a raw slab standing in a yard and a finished stone surface installed in your home. In order: the slab is selected and reserved; the job is templated on site once the supporting cabinets or structure are in place; a layout drawing is produced showing how your pieces sit on that specific slab; the pieces are cut, the cut-outs and holes are made, the edges are profiled and polished; the stone is transported, carried in, set, levelled, joined and sealed. Each of those is a separate cost and a separate opportunity for something to go wrong.
Two consequences follow, and they explain most of the frustration people have with stone quotations. First, the rate you are quoted per foot run is a bundle: it contains slab, labour, fabrication, delivery and installation in proportions the quotation rarely shows. Second, the decisions that matter are made early. By the time the saw runs, the seam positions, the grain direction and the edge profile are fixed, and stone does not offer a second attempt — a piece cut wrong is scrap, not a rework.

Natural stone is quarried in blocks and sawn into slabs, so consecutive slabs from the same block share a pattern — which is why a fabricator talks about reserving a bundle rather than ordering a colour. Two slabs sold under the same trade name from different blocks can look like different materials. That is the single most important thing to understand before ordering natural stone: you are not buying a catalogue entry, you are buying particular rock.
Go and see it. A photograph and a 100 mm sample tell you almost nothing about how a dramatic vein will land on your island, and a slab that looks calm in a small sample can be startling across three metres. At the yard, look at the whole slab under daylight, note which end you want where, and ask for the slab to be tagged and reserved to your job in writing. Where a run needs more than one slab, ask whether they are from the same block and whether they can be book-matched — opened like a book so the veining mirrors across the join.
Check the slab physically as well as visually. Ask about fissures and natural fractures, whether the back has been mesh or resin backed for transport (normal on many marbles, and not a defect in itself), and how the yard handles a slab that breaks before installation — whether a replacement would come from the same block, and who bears the cost. Get the answer before the deposit, not after the breakage.
Granite and marble behave very differently in a Malaysian home, and the difference decides where each belongs far more than taste does. Granite is natural quarried rock that handles heat well and is hard-wearing; it is porous, so it wants sealing roughly once a year, and an unsealed slab will hold a turmeric or oil stain. Marble is softer and more easily scratched and dulled, and it is reactive to acids — vinegar, lemon and many common cleaners etch a polished surface into a dull mark that has to be honed and polished back out. Polished marble is also slippery when wet, which is why it is normally kept to dry areas.

Marble deserves one more sentence of honesty. It is the most beautiful of these materials and the highest maintenance, and in a working Malaysian kitchen it will acquire a patina rather than stay pristine. If that is unacceptable to you, put the marble somewhere it will be admired rather than cooked on — a vanity top, a feature wall, a table — and use granite or an engineered slab where the work happens.
Templating is the site visit where the fabricator records the exact shape of what the stone has to fit — every length, every wall that is not square, every projection and every service. It happens after the cabinets, vanity carcasses or supports are installed and levelled, never before, because stone is cut to the room as it actually is rather than to the drawing as it was intended.
What has to be settled before the templater arrives is a short list, and it is worth printing: the sink and the hob, physically present or at least confirmed by exact model, because a cut-out made for the wrong model is scrap; whether the sink is drop-in or undermount, because an undermount needs a polished internal edge and support underneath; tap and accessory hole positions and count; the overhang you want at each edge; whether there is an upstand or a full splashback, and in which material; and the edge profile on each run.
Walk the template with the fabricator and ask two questions on the day. Where will the seams fall? And which way does the grain run on each piece? Those are far easier to change on site with a pencil than to discover on installation day. Confirm access as well — a slab is heavy, rigid and does not go round tight corners, so lift dimensions and stair turns are a templating-day question in a high-floor condo.
Cutting happens in a workshop, not on your site. A bridge saw takes the straight cuts, CNC and waterjet equipment handles shaped work, internal cut-outs and drainer grooves, and the edges are then profiled and polished on the machine or by hand. What you should ask to see is not the machinery but the layout drawing — the plan showing your pieces positioned on that specific slab, with seams and grain direction marked. Ask for it before the slab is cut. It is the only chance to say “not there”.
One detail deserves singling out because it is the commonest cause of a cracked top: internal corners. Any internal corner in stone — the corner of a sink cut-out, an L-shape, a notch around a column — concentrates stress, and a sharp internal corner is where a crack starts. A properly fabricated cut-out has a radius at the corners and the internal edges polished rather than left raw. If a quotation is silent about cut-out radii, that is a question worth asking.
The second is support. Stone is strong in compression and unforgiving of an unsupported span. Overhangs beyond what the carcass supports need brackets or a substrate, and a cabinet that later sags — typically because water got into a particleboard carcass — drops a corner and lets a hairline run out of the sink cut-out. The edge is where fabrication hours go. A straight or lightly rounded edge is the standard; everything beyond it is machine and hand time, and it is priced as such. The upgrade most people want is the chunky look, and it is usually achieved with a mitred edge: two pieces joined at 45 degrees so a slab that arrived around 20 mm thick reads as 40 mm or 60 mm. It is convincing when done well, and it doubles the cut length and demands a clean colour and pattern match at the corner — which on a strongly veined natural stone is real skill, not a checkbox.
A waterfall end, where the top folds down the side of an island to the floor, is the most expensive detail on a normal kitchen: it needs extra slab, a mitred corner that has to match, and careful handling of a tall, heavy, fragile piece. On natural stone it is also where vein matching is most obvious, because the pattern has to continue round a right angle in the eye of anyone standing in the room.
None of this is priced on this site, and it should not be guessed at. What you can do is make the quotation explicit: which profile on which run, how many mitred edges, whether a waterfall is included and on how many ends, and whether the upstand or splashback is the same slab and the same finish. Slabs are finite, so any run longer than a slab has a seam, and an L-shape almost always has one at the corner. A seam is not a defect; a badly placed seam is. A good fabricator puts the join where a cabinet division supports it, keeps it away from the sink cut-out where the stone is already weakest, and matches the pattern across it. On a natural stone with strong veining the match is more visible than on a uniform engineered slab — which is a reason to look at the layout drawing rather than to assume.
Cut-outs are the other structural moment. A drop-in sink drops into a hole; an undermount hangs beneath the stone and needs a polished internal edge and proper support, which is part of why it costs more and why the carcass beneath it has to be up to the job. Hob cut-outs must match the exact appliance model. Tap and accessory holes need their count and spacing confirmed before fabrication, because adding one afterwards means drilling a fitted top in place.
At installation, the stone is set, levelled and shimmed, the joins are filled with a colour-matched adhesive and dressed back, and the junction against the wall is sealed. That perimeter bead is a sealant joint like any other and it deserves the same discipline — and on porous stone specifically, a non-staining grade, because some sealants will stain a porous substrate outward from the joint. The surface finish is a separate decision from the material and it changes both the look and the daily experience. A polished finish is the glossy, reflective one: it shows the colour and the veining at their strongest, and it also shows every water spot, fingerprint and etch mark. A honed finish is smooth and matt: quieter, better at hiding minor marks and fingerprints, and on marble it makes an etch far less visible because there is no gloss to interrupt. Leathered and other textured finishes add a subtle grip and hide marks best of all, at the cost of being slightly harder to wipe clean.
Sealing is not optional on natural stone. Granite is porous and wants sealing roughly once a year; marble is porous and reactive to acids and is normally sealed every six to twelve months with a penetrating stone sealer. Sealing does not make stone stain-proof or acid-proof — it buys you time to wipe a spill before it soaks in. On marble the rules are simple: pH-neutral cleaner only, no vinegar or lemon-based products, and wipe spills immediately.
When a finish does eventually dull, it is restored rather than replaced. Most searches for granite and marble land on kitchen tops, but the same fabrication process produces a long list of other pieces, and each has its own constraints:

Two of those need a caution. Stone cladding on a wall is a weight question first and an appearance question second — ask how the panels are mechanically fixed rather than relying on adhesive alone, especially overhead or at height. And stone treads on a staircase have a slip-resistance consequence: polished natural stone is slippery when wet, which is exactly why a honed or textured finish is usually specified underfoot. Programme first. Templating cannot happen until the cabinets or supports are in and levelled, and fabrication takes workshop days after that — so there is an unavoidable gap between a finished kitchen carcass and a finished kitchen. Plan for it rather than discovering it: a temporary worktop for a week is a normal part of a renovation programme, and pushing a fabricator to cut without a proper template is how a job becomes scrap.
Handling is the other hidden variable. Slabs are heavy, rigid and vulnerable at the moment of lifting, and a high-floor condo with a small lift, a tight lobby turn or a staircase-only access changes the job. Raise access on templating day, agree who provides the manpower and protection, and settle in writing what happens if a piece is damaged in transit or on the way in. Then require the quotation to itemise:
