Back lane, empty plot or a low wall that anyone can climb? Here is what anti-climb fencing does, where it suits a home or a business, and how to get a quote you can compare.

An anti-climb fence is a welded steel mesh fence with openings too narrow for fingers or the toe of a shoe to grip, so it is hard to climb. The same close weave also makes it slower to cut than ordinary wire mesh. At home it is used mostly on side and back boundaries that face a back lane, empty land or a drain reserve, and on business premises it is used on the perimeter. It is quoted per metre run, by height, mesh and finish, and how the posts are fixed. We do not publish a per-metre rate for anti-climb fencing, because the ground, the height and the fixing change it too much from one boundary to the next. Ordinary fence prices are set out below for comparison. WhatsApp ClickBina photos of the boundary for a free quote.
Most climbable fences give an intruder something to hold: the gaps in BRC mesh, the horizontal rails of a grille fence or the top of a brick wall. Anti-climb fencing removes those holds. The panels are a stiff welded mesh with narrow openings, so there is nowhere to put a finger or a shoe, and the panel does not flex much when someone pulls on it. The panels are usually galvanised, often powder-coated as well, and fixed to steel posts. On many systems the fixings sit on the inside face, so there is nothing to undo from outside.
An anti-climb fence slows people down. It does not make a property impossible to enter. It works best as one layer with lighting, a camera on the weak corners and a secure gate. The CCTV installation cost guide covers the camera side.
Anti-climb mesh looks industrial, so homeowners rarely want it across the front of the house. Where it earns its place:
A common mix on a landed home is a decorative grille or pillar fence at the front, where looks matter, and anti-climb mesh along the sides and back, where security matters and nobody sees it.
How it compares with the fences most Klang Valley homes already have:
| Fence type | How easy to climb | How easy to cut | Look |
|---|---|---|---|
| BRC wire mesh | Easy: the openings take hands and feet | Easy with hand cutters | Plain, budget |
| Mild steel grille fence | Moderate: rails and bars give footholds | Harder: usually needs power tools | Decorative, front-boundary |
| Brick or RC wall | Easy to climb from the top edge | Cannot be cut | Solid, private |
| Aluminium pressed panel | Moderate: depends on the design | Moderate | Modern, private |
| Anti-climb welded mesh | Hard: no grip for fingers or toes | Slow: many wires close together | Industrial, see-through |

Many terrace and semi-D homes already have a low back or side wall that someone can pull themselves over. Instead of demolishing it, the wall can be raised with anti-climb panels, with posts fixed to the top or the face of the existing wall. It is often cheaper than a new fence line, but it only works if the wall can take the load:
If the existing wall is also holding back soil, as on sloping lots, check it is still stable before adding anything on top. The retaining wall cost guide explains what to look for.
Like other fencing, anti-climb is priced per metre run, and two quotes are only comparable if they describe the same fence. What moves the number:
These are the site's published figures for ordinary fence types, quoted from our fencing cost guide. They are not anti-climb fence prices. We show them so you can see where the options you are weighing sit (indicative Klang Valley ranges for 2026, supply and install):
| Ordinary fence type (not anti-climb) | Cost per linear metre |
|---|---|
| BRC wire mesh (galvanised) | RM80 – RM150 |
| Mild steel grille (flat bar / round bar) | RM150 – RM350 |
| Aluminium pressed panel | RM200 – RM400 |
| Brick / RC pillar + grille infill | RM350 – RM700 |
If an old fence has to come out first, the same guide puts demolition and debris removal at RM15 – RM40 per metre. Your anti-climb quote is a separate per-metre figure that we give after measuring the run and checking the ground or the wall it will stand on.
Anti-climb fencing is still a fence, so the local authority's boundary rules apply. As our fencing guide sets out, most local authorities (DBKL, MBPJ, MBSA) allow a front boundary fence of 1.5 m – 1.8 m without a special permit. Open grille or mesh fencing is usually exempt up to 1.8–2.0 m, and above 2.0 m most jobs need a council permit. Corner lots usually have a sight-line rule as well, typically no fence above 0.9 m within 3 m of the corner.
Anti-climb mesh is open mesh, which helps. But the rules are set by each council and they change, so check with yours before ordering panels, especially for a tall rear fence or a mesh extension on top of an existing wall. Agree in writing who handles any council submission and whether it is in the quote.
In a strata-titled townhouse or a gated scheme, boundary fencing is usually controlled by the management body, and changes need JMB or MC approval. In a gated and guarded community the perimeter fence may belong to the community rather than to you. The gated and guarded community guide explains how strata and landed schemes differ.
On a shared boundary, talk to the neighbour before you start. A fence that leans over their side, or posts fixed into a wall you do not own, is a common start of a dispute. If it has already gone that way, our boundary wall dispute guide covers the options. Some owners also want spikes or wire along the top. Anything that could injure a person is worth checking with the council and the neighbours first.
“Anti-climb” is a sales word as much as a specification. Suppliers often use product names such as “358 mesh”. Rather than rely on a name, get these answers on the quote:
| Ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Mesh opening size and wire thickness | Together they decide whether fingers and toes can grip, and how long it takes to cut |
| Panel height and the total height with any wall | The council limit applies to the total, not the panel |
| Coating: galvanised, powder-coated, or both | Bare or poorly coated steel rusts fast in Malaysian humidity |
| Post size, spacing and fixing | Concrete footings or base plates into solid material, never into a hollow block |
| How the panels are fixed to the posts | Fixings should not be reachable or removable from outside |
| Gates and how they lock | A strong fence with a weak gate is a weak fence |
| What is excluded | Old-fence removal, wall repairs, council submission, drain crossings |
Concreted posts need time for the concrete to cure before the panels are fully loaded, so a new fence line usually takes longer than a mesh extension on an existing wall.
Steel fencing in Malaysia fails at the same points every time: where the coating is cut, at the base of the posts, and where vines have pushed the mesh out of line. Once a year:
