Want the parquet look without real timber? How herringbone SPC and porcelain plank tiles are laid, what drives the price, and what a fair quote shows.
📍 We serve KL, Selangor & Putrajaya.

Herringbone SPC is rigid-core vinyl laid as short planks in a zigzag, using two mirrored plank types (left and right, often called A and B); herringbone tiles are wood-look porcelain or ceramic planks laid in the same pattern on tile adhesive. Both cost more than a straight lay because of the extra set-out, cutting and offcuts. ClickBina's published base rates are RM7 – RM13 per sq ft installed for mid-range SPC and RM18 – RM35 per sq ft supply and lay for porcelain (indicative 2026, Klang Valley); the herringbone labour and wastage are quoted on top for your room.
Herringbone is an arrangement of rectangles laid in a staggered zigzag, named for its resemblance to the bones of a fish. In timber it is the classic parquet look, and ClickBina's parquet flooring cost guide covers real wood herringbone. This guide is about the two lower-maintenance ways Malaysian homes now get the same look:
Searches for “spc herringbone”, “herringbone spc flooring” and “herringbone tiles” all describe the same pattern; what changes the price and the result is the material under it and how carefully the room is set out.
The pattern looks similar from a distance, but the two materials behave very differently once they are down. This is how they compare in a typical Klang Valley home:
| Point | Herringbone SPC | Herringbone porcelain / ceramic tiles |
|---|---|---|
| How it is fixed | Click joints, usually floating; glue-down on large open areas | Tile adhesive on a sound base, then grout |
| Over existing tiles | Usually yes, if the old floor is flat and well bonded | Possible if the old tiles are sound; often hacked first |
| Wet areas | Water-resistant surface, but not for bathrooms or areas that flood | Suits bathrooms, wet kitchens and outdoor areas with the right grade |
| Feel underfoot | Warmer, slightly softer, quieter | Cool and hard; grout lines visible |
| Repair | Floating planks can be lifted; herringbone is slower to lift than straight planks | Single tiles can be cut out and replaced if spares are kept |
| Dust and time on site | Low dust, quick | Slower; adhesive and grout need time to set |
For bedrooms, living and dining areas in a condo, herringbone SPC is usually the practical choice. For a ground-floor porch, a bathroom or a wet kitchen, porcelain plank tiles are the material that belongs there.
A straight SPC floor uses one plank shape. A click herringbone floor cannot, because each plank locks into its neighbour from a different side as the zigzag turns. One retailer's SPC click herringbone instructions say there are two differently milled click herringbone planks in each box, right and left, and tell the installer to sort them into separate piles before starting. Brands label them differently (A and B, or right and left), so the installer identifies them by the shape of the joint, not the letter.
The same instructions are strict about sequence: the first two rows are laid together as a double row to form an inverted V, and later rows use one hand of plank at a time, worked in a set direction. A floor started in the wrong corner, or with the hands mixed, will not lock properly. This is the main reason herringbone SPC takes longer to lay than straight planks, even though the material is the same.
No ClickBina guide publishes a separate herringbone rate, so the honest way to price it is to start from the base rates for each material and add the pattern work as its own line. These are ClickBina's published ranges (indicative 2026, Klang Valley):

💬 WhatsApp for a quoteThese base rates assume a straight lay. On a herringbone floor, expect the labour line to be higher and the material order to be larger than the measured area, and ask for both to be shown separately. ClickBina's SPC flooring guide explains wear layers and plank grades, and the floor tile replacement cost guide explains when the old floor has to be hacked out first.
ClickBina's floor tile cost guide puts it plainly: a straight lay is cheapest, while herringbone, diagonal or mixed patterns add cutting time and wastage. The same is true of SPC. The extra cost comes from four places:
Small rooms with many corners, columns and door openings cost more per sq ft than one large open hall, because the ratio of cut pieces to full pieces is higher. If two quotes differ a lot, compare the herringbone labour line and the ordered quantity before comparing the plank price.
Herringbone shows every dip. A click joint that sits over a hollow can open, and on a tiled floor a lippage between tiles catches the light along the zigzag. The Wickes SPC click herringbone instructions give a flatness tolerance of 3 mm within 2 m, and ask for the floor to be vacuumed clean and the skirting removed before laying.
A good herringbone floor looks centred. The Wickes instructions say herringbone floors should be centred along the length of the main body of the room so that the cut pieces on both sides are the same size and the floor is symmetrical. In practice, decide these before the installer starts:
For tile herringbone, the tile spacing and grout colour change the look a great deal. ClickBina's tile design ideas show plank and pattern layouts for comparison.
| Room | Better choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Living and dining | SPC or porcelain | Large open area shows the pattern; fewer cuts per sq ft |
| Bedrooms | SPC | Warmer underfoot, quiet, quick to lay over old tiles |
| Foyer or corridor | SPC or porcelain | Short runs look striking, but many cuts per sq ft |
| Bathroom or wet kitchen | Porcelain plank tiles | Standing water and cleaning; SPC is not for wet rooms |
| Porch or covered outdoor area | Outdoor-grade porcelain | Sun and rain; needs a slip-resistant outdoor tile |
| Rental unit | Straight-lay SPC, or herringbone in one feature zone | Lower labour and easier plank replacement |
A common compromise is herringbone in the living and dining area only, with straight planks of the same colour in the bedrooms. The look carries through the home while the costliest labour stays where people see it.
The two are often confused. In herringbone, rectangular planks meet end to side in a staggered zigzag. In chevron, the plank ends are cut at an angle so they meet in a clean, continuous V point. Chevron SPC and tiles are made as their own products, so you cannot cut ordinary planks into chevron on site without a lot of waste. Herringbone is the more common and more widely stocked of the two in SPC.
Both patterns carry the same kind of premium over a straight lay. Choose by the look you prefer, then check the product is stocked in enough quantity for the whole area.
ClickBina's vinyl flooring cost guide gives typical room budgets for straight-lay SPC, which is a useful floor to compare a herringbone quote against.
ClickBina supplies and installs interior finishes chosen by budget and use case, including SPC and tiled floors, and handles whole-house refurbishment with the trades coordinated. Tell us the rooms, the rough size and the material you are considering, and we will price the base floor and the herringbone work as separate lines. How we estimated prices: every RM figure on this page is quoted unchanged from the ClickBina guides named above; they are indicative Klang Valley ranges for 2026, not fixed rates. No herringbone premium is published, so it is described rather than priced.
