Cleaner Scratched My Floor
Repair Options by Floor Type (2026)

Scratches, dull patches or etching after a clean? Here is what each floor type can and cannot recover from.

📍 We serve KL, Selangor & Putrajaya.

Marble floor with fine cleaning scratches beside a freshly re-polished section

What you can do depends on the floor. Marble and terrazzo can usually be honed and re-polished; timber and parquet can be spot-fixed or sanded; epoxy can be recoated; but scratched vinyl, SPC, laminate and glazed tiles cannot be polished out, so the damaged planks or tiles are replaced. First check whether it is really a scratch: on marble, a dull patch after cleaning is often acid etching from the cleaner, not grit. ClickBina's guides put marble honing and polishing at RM3.50 – RM5.50 per sq ft and parquet sanding at RM4 – RM8 per sq ft (indicative 2026, Klang Valley).

First: is it a scratch, a dull patch or an etch?

After a cleaning job, three different kinds of damage get called scratches, and each one has a different fix. Look at the floor with a torch held low, almost flat to the surface, and run a fingernail across the mark.

  • A real scratch is a line you can feel with a fingernail. It comes from grit dragged under a mop, pad or machine, or from furniture being pushed.
  • A dull patch or swirl you cannot feel is usually wear on the surface finish: the shine has been rubbed off by an abrasive pad or powder.
  • An etch is a dull, slightly rough mark on marble or terrazzo where an acidic cleaner, vinegar or lime-based product has dissolved the surface. ClickBina's marble flooring guide explains why marble reacts to acids and why it needs re-polishing rather than more cleaning.

Fine scratches and etching on stone are a polishing job. Deep gouges, chipped tiles and torn planks are a replacement job. Knowing which one you have stops you paying for the wrong fix.

How cleaning scratches a floor

Cleaning itself rarely scratches a floor. Dirt does, when it is pushed around under pressure. The usual causes are:

  • Mopping or scrubbing before vacuuming, so sand and grit are dragged across the floor.
  • Green scouring pads, steel wool or scouring powder used on a polished or coated surface.
  • A floor machine fitted with the wrong pad or brush for the floor, or run on a dry floor.
  • Post-renovation dust: cement and plaster dust is mildly abrasive. ClickBina's post-renovation cleaning guide explains why it is vacuumed first, not wiped.
  • Acidic or strong alkaline cleaners on marble, terrazzo or a waxed finish.
  • Furniture, appliances or ladders dragged instead of lifted while the floor is being cleaned.

What can be fixed, floor by floor

Floor typeLight scratches or dull patchesDeep scratches or chips
Marble and terrazzoHone and re-polish the affected area or roomGrind, hone and polish; replace a cracked slab

Vinyl, SPC and laminateCannot be sanded or polishedReplace the damaged planks
Solid timber and parquetSpot-fix with touch-up or recoatSand and refinish the room, or replace blocks
Epoxy and coated concreteLight sand and recoat the top layerRepair the area and recoat

The rule of thumb: a floor that is the same material all the way through (stone, solid timber, a thick coating) can be re-surfaced; a floor whose look is a thin printed or glazed layer cannot.

Marble and terrazzo: honing and polishing

Marble and terrazzo are the most forgiving floors after a bad clean, because the damage is in the stone surface and the stone can be taken back to a fresh layer. Honing uses progressively finer abrasive pads to remove scratches and etching; polishing and crystallisation bring the shine back. A floor that is only dull may need a maintenance polish; one with fine scratches needs honing first.

Polishing one patch can leave it brighter than the rest of the room, so specialists usually work to a natural break, like a doorway or a wall. ClickBina's terrazzo restoration guide covers the same grind-hone-polish sequence for terrazzo. After honing, the stone should be sealed again, because honing opens the surface.

Porcelain and homogeneous tiles: polish, or replace the tile

Porcelain and homogeneous tiles are much harder than marble, so cleaning scratches are less common. When they happen, they are usually on polished tiles, where the shine is a polished surface layer. Fine marks can sometimes be softened by a specialist, but deep scratches and chips mean replacing the tile.

Replacing one or two tiles is simple if you have spares from the same batch. Without spares, a close match is hard to find and a patch may show. ClickBina's floor tile replacement guide explains when a few tiles are enough and when re-tiling a whole room makes more sense. Glazed ceramic tiles cannot be polished at all: damage in the glaze stays.

Vinyl, SPC and laminate: replace the plank

The look of vinyl, SPC and laminate is a printed layer under a thin clear wear layer. Once a scratch cuts through the wear layer, no polish or filler makes it disappear. Light scuffs on the surface can sometimes be reduced with a cleaner made for that floor, but a visible scratch means replacing the plank.

Click-lock floating floors can have a damaged plank replaced, usually by unclipping from the nearest wall or by cutting the plank out and gluing in a new one. Keep a few spare planks from every floor you lay. ClickBina's SPC flooring problems guide covers the other faults that look like damage, such as planks lifting at the joints.

Timber and parquet: spot fix or sand the room

Solid timber and parquet can be sanded, which takes off the worn finish and a thin layer of wood with it. Light scratches only in the lacquer can sometimes be blended with a recoat. Deeper scratches into the wood usually mean sanding and refinishing the whole room, so the colour and sheen match.

ClickBina's parquet sanding guide explains how a sanding job runs, and the parquet repair guide covers replacing individual damaged blocks. Engineered timber can only be sanded if its top layer is thick enough, so check the product before booking.

Epoxy and coated concrete: recoat

Epoxy and other floor coatings scratch in the top layer. The usual fix is to clean and lightly sand the surface, repair any deep gouges, and roll a new topcoat. A patch repair is possible, but a full topcoat across the area gives an even finish. Hard machine brushes and abrasive pads on a coated floor are a common cause of dull lanes in shops and car porches.

What the repair costs

These are ClickBina's published ranges (indicative 2026, Klang Valley). Small areas often hit a minimum charge, so a single scratch may not cost the per sq ft rate times its size.

Who pays when a cleaner scratches the floor

If a cleaning company or a part-time cleaner caused the damage, tell them in writing as soon as you notice it, before the floor is used heavily. Record the marks with your phone, note the date and the products or machine used, and keep the booking or invoice. Many cleaning companies will discuss a repair or a refund when the damage is reported quickly and clearly. A repair quote that names the cause and the fix helps that conversation.

If you are a landlord and the scratches appeared during a tenancy, ClickBina's rental deposit deductions guide explains the difference between normal wear and damage the tenant pays for.

How to stop it happening again

  1. Vacuum or dry-mop before any wet cleaning, every time.
  2. Use soft microfibre mops and the white or red pads made for that floor, never green scourers or steel wool.
  3. Use a neutral cleaner on marble and terrazzo; keep vinegar, lime and acidic toilet cleaners off them.
  4. Put felt pads under furniture and lift, never drag, heavy items.
  5. Tell any new cleaner what the floor is and which products are allowed.
  6. Put a mat inside the main door to catch grit before it reaches the floor.

Common Questions

Can scratches on a marble floor be removed?
Usually yes. Honing removes fine scratches and etching, then polishing brings back the shine. ClickBina's guide puts hone and polish at RM3.50–RM5.50 per sq ft (indicative 2026, Klang Valley).
Can you polish scratches out of vinyl or SPC flooring?
No. The look is a printed layer under a thin wear layer, so a visible scratch means replacing the damaged plank.
Why does my marble look dull after cleaning?
Often it is etching from an acidic cleaner, not scratches. It needs honing and re-polishing, and a neutral cleaner from then on.
Can scratched floor tiles be repaired?
Fine marks on polished porcelain can sometimes be softened, but deep scratches and chips mean replacing the tile. Spare tiles from the same batch make it much easier.
How do I fix scratches on a parquet floor?
Light scratches in the lacquer may blend with a recoat; deeper ones usually need the room sanded and refinished.
The cleaner scratched my floor. Who pays?
Report it to the cleaner or company in writing quickly, record the marks and keep the booking. A repair quote naming the cause and fix helps the discussion.
How do I clean a floor without scratching it?
Vacuum first, use soft microfibre and the right pads, neutral cleaners on stone, and felt pads under furniture.
