Most Klang Valley fridge faults fall into four groups: airflow and defrost problems (icing up, warm fridge with a cold freezer), electrical and control faults (thermostat, control board, fan motor, start relay), door and seal problems (a perished gasket makes the compressor run constantly), and sealed-system faults (a refrigerant leak or a failed compressor). The first three are routinely repairable and usually worth repairing. The fourth is the expensive one, and on an older fridge it is often the point at which replacement makes more sense. Diagnosis comes first — nobody can price a fridge repair over the phone from “it’s not cold”.

What your fridge is telling you

A refrigerator is a heat pump with a fan and a timer bolted on. Cold is made in one place — the evaporator, usually behind a panel in the freezer — and then distributed to the fridge compartment by a fan. Almost every confusing symptom makes sense once you know that. A freezer that still works while the fridge is warm, for instance, is not a “no cooling” fault at all: cold is being made, but it is not getting through.

Before calling anyone, note three things: what is cold and what is not (fridge only, freezer only, neither), what you can hear (a running hum, clicking every few minutes, or complete silence), and what changed recently (a power cut, a house move, a door left ajar, a very full load). Those three answers narrow the fault more than any amount of guessing.

Not cooling, but the light still works

This is the most common call, and the interior light is a red herring — the lamp runs off the same supply whether or not the cooling circuit is doing anything, so a lit fridge proves only that there is power at the socket.

Work through it in this order:

  • Is the freezer still cold? If yes, cold is being made and the fault is in distribution — the circulation fan, an iced-over evaporator, or a failed defrost cycle. This is usually a moderate, worthwhile repair.
  • Is the back of the fridge warm? The condenser coil should feel warm when the unit is running. Stone cold with silence points to an electrical or control fault; hot with a humming that stops after a few seconds points at the compressor or its start relay.
  • When was the condenser last cleaned? In Klang Valley kitchens the coil at the back or underneath clogs with dust and grease, the unit cannot dump heat, and cooling falls off gradually. It is the cheapest possible fix and it is genuinely often the answer.
  • Is the door sealing? Close it on a sheet of paper and pull — if the paper slides out freely, the gasket has perished. In our humidity a leaking door pulls in warm wet air continuously, and the unit ices up and runs non-stop trying to keep up.
  • Is it overloaded or packed against the back wall? Air has to circulate. A fridge stuffed to the vents behaves like a broken one.

A technician confirms the rest with instruments — temperatures at the evaporator, whether the compressor is drawing current, whether the defrost heater is live during its cycle. That is the part you are paying for on the first visit: knowing which of the above it actually is.

Icing up, frost and a warm freezer

Modern frost-free fridges run a heater against the evaporator on a cycle to melt off the frost that naturally forms, and drain the meltwater away. When any part of that cycle fails, ice builds instead of clearing — it slowly blocks the airway to the fridge compartment, so the fridge goes warm while the freezer, sitting right next to the iced-up coil, stays cold. It is one fault with two symptoms, and it is very commonly misread as two separate problems.

The usual suspects are the defrost heater, the defrost thermostat that tells it when to stop, and the timer or control board that decides when it runs. Manually defrosting the unit — switching it off with the doors open overnight — will restore cooling for a few days, which is a useful diagnostic: if it comes back cold and then re-ices within a week or two, the defrost circuit is the fault and no amount of repeat defrosting will fix it.

On a manual-defrost or direct-cool fridge, heavy frost is normal and simply means it is due a defrost. A door left ajar, a perished gasket or very humid conditions during a wet spell will all accelerate it.

Water pooling inside or underneath

Water in the bottom of the fridge, under the salad drawers, or on the kitchen floor is nearly always the defrost drain. The meltwater from each defrost cycle is supposed to run down a small channel at the back of the freezer compartment, through a tube, into a tray on top of the compressor where the heat evaporates it. Food debris and slime block that channel, and the water backs up into the fridge instead.

Clearing the drain is quick work. Less commonly it is a cracked drip tray, a split water line on a plumbed ice-and-water model, or condensation from a door that no longer seals.

One thing worth checking before you assume the fridge is at fault: water on the kitchen floor near a fridge is also a classic presentation of a leak from something else entirely — a supply line to a nearby appliance, a failed floor trap seal, or a leak from the unit above in a stacked block. Noise, tripping breakers and the compressor

Fridges are not silent, but the noises they make are diagnostic:

  • A steady low hum is the compressor running. Normal.
  • Clicking every few minutes, then silence is the compressor trying to start and dropping out on its overload protector — typically a failed start relay or capacitor, or a compressor that has stiffened. The relay is a small part; the compressor is not.
  • Rattling or buzzing that comes and goes is usually a fan blade catching ice, or a loose mounting grommet under the compressor.
  • Gurgling and occasional ticking is refrigerant moving and plastic expanding. Harmless.

Tripping the breaker or RCD is different, and you should stop using the fridge. A trip means current is finding a path to earth — most often through a failed defrost heater, a compressor winding that has broken down, or damp wiring. Do not keep resetting the breaker to get another day out of it. Sealed-system work: who should touch it, and what to require

The compressor, condenser, capillary and evaporator form one sealed pressurised circuit. Everything else on a fridge — fans, heaters, boards, thermostats, gaskets, drains — can be replaced without opening that circuit. Once it is opened, the job changes character completely.

  • Use a technician competent in refrigerant handling, with the right recovery and evacuation equipment. Most modern domestic fridges and freezers use a hydrocarbon refrigerant, which is flammable. That is the reason this is not a DIY job and not a job for a general handyman — it is not about difficulty, it is about the gas. Ask directly what refrigerant your unit uses and confirm the technician works with it routinely.
  • Never accept a “top-up” without a leak being found. A sealed system does not consume refrigerant. If it is low, it leaked, and gas put in without repairing the leak will be gone again.   • Require the diagnosis in writing before authorising sealed-system work: which component failed, how it was confirmed, and what the warranty on the repair is.
  • Ask for the age verdict first. A competent technician will tell you honestly when a sealed-system repair on a ten-year-old fridge is not worth doing.

How a fridge repair is quoted

The drivers that move a real fridge quote: which subsystem failed (a drain clear and a sealed-system repair are not in the same universe), whether the part is stocked or has to be ordered for your brand and model, whether the unit is built-in (a fridge integrated into cabinetry has to be drawn out and re-fitted, which is carpentry time on top of appliance time), access, and whether a second visit is needed. Repair or replace: the honest test

There is no universal rule, but there is a usable test. Ask three questions in order:

  • How old is it? Under about five years, repair almost anything. Five to ten, repair everything except a major sealed-system failure. Over ten, a sealed-system repair is rarely the right call — other components are on the same clock.
  • What proportion of a replacement is the quote? The common rule of thumb is that once a repair approaches roughly half the cost of an equivalent new unit, replacement wins — because the repair carries a short parts warranty and the new unit carries a full one.
  • Is this the first fault or the third? A first failure on an otherwise healthy fridge is worth fixing. A third callout in two years is the unit telling you something.

Rentals: who pays for the fridge?

In a tenanted Klang Valley unit, a fridge on the inventory is the landlord’s asset, and the usual position is that the landlord covers fair-wear-and-tear failure of a supplied appliance while the tenant covers damage and misuse. Two practical points that prevent most disputes:

  • Agree who books the repair. The fastest arrangement is that the tenant reports the symptom with photos, the landlord authorises the visit, and the invoice goes to the landlord — not the tenant paying and claiming it back later against a deposit.

Preventing the next breakdown — and what to have ready

Fridges fail early for boring, avoidable reasons:

  • Leave clearance at the back and sides. A fridge shoved tight into a cabinet recess with no air path is being slowly cooked. This matters most in built-in installations — check the ventilation gap the manufacturer specifies is actually there.

  • Do not block the internal vents with a packed load, and let hot food cool before it goes in.
