Glass Block Wall Malaysia
Bathroom, Shower, Stairs & Partition Guide (2026)

Want daylight through a wall without a clear view? How glass block walls are built, where they suit, and what to watch for.

Curved frosted glass block shower wall in a modern bathroom with daylight glowing through

Glass block walls are built from hollow pressed-glass blocks laid like masonry, either in mortar with reinforcement in the joints or with a mortarless spacer-and-silicone system, to let daylight through a wall while blurring the view. They suit shower walls, stair walls and windowless rooms, but they are not load-bearing, need a firm base and fixings at the edges, and in a shower they must sit on proper waterproofing. For comparison, ClickBina's guides put a frameless tempered glass partition at RM350 – RM600 per sq ft and a half-brick partition at RM18 – RM30 per sq ft (indicative 2026, Klang Valley).

What glass blocks are

A glass block is two pressed-glass halves fused together around a sealed hollow centre. Laid in a wall they behave like bricks: they stack, they carry their own weight, and they are joined with mortar or a dedicated jointing system. Unlike bricks, they let light pass, and their faces can be clear, rippled, frosted or patterned to decide how much of the view comes with it.

In Malaysian homes they turn up in older bathrooms and staircases, and they are coming back in renovation work as a way to brighten a dark corridor or a windowless bathroom. ClickBina's room dividers guide mentions them only as a backdrop in two design ideas; this guide covers how a glass block wall is actually built.

Where a glass block wall works

LocationWhy glass blocksWatch for
Shower wall or bathroom partitionLight without a clear view; nothing to rust or delaminateMust sit on a waterproofed kerb or floor; joints must be sealed
Staircase wallDaylight from a stairwell into a corridor or roomEdge fixing to the stair structure; no handholds on the face
Windowless bathroom or corridorBorrows light from the next roomGlass blocks do not ventilate; the room still needs an exhaust
Room partitionA solid divider that still glowsWeight on the floor slab; heavier than gypsum
Small panel in an outside wallLight with privacy facing a neighbour or laneHeat on sun-facing walls; joints must keep rain out

The parent guide's warning applies everywhere: glass blocks block air. A bathroom or wet kitchen behind them still needs its own exhaust fan or window.

Two ways to build it: mortar or mortarless

SystemHow it is laidStrengthsWeaknesses
Mortar-laidBlocks set in a mortar bed with steel reinforcement in the horizontal joints at intervals, and the joints pointedTraditional, strong, suits curves and large wallsSlower; needs a skilled mason; joints show cement and can stain
Mortarless (spacer and silicone)Plastic spacers and channels hold each block; joints are sealed with siliconeFaster and cleaner; neat even jointsBest for smaller, straight panels; the silicone needs care in wet areas

Whichever system is used, the panel needs a perimeter channel or anchors tying it to the walls and ceiling or beam on each side, with an expansion strip so the building can move without cracking the blocks. Ask which system is proposed and how the edges are fixed before agreeing a price.

Base, weight and the structure around it

Glass blocks are heavy, and a wall of them is a dead load on whatever it stands on. They also cannot carry anything from above; a glass block wall is a non-load-bearing partition, not a replacement for a structural wall or a beam.

  • Ground floor on slab: usually straightforward, on a level base or kerb.
  • Upper floor or condo: check that the slab can take a heavy partition where it stands; a gypsum or glass partition is lighter.
  • Replacing an existing wall: confirm the old wall was not load-bearing before it comes out.
  • Top of the panel: there must be a gap and a flexible joint under any beam, so deflection does not crush the top course.

ClickBina's partition wall cost guide compares brick, gypsum and glass partitions on weight, sound and cost, which helps decide whether glass blocks are worth the extra load.

Glass blocks in a shower: waterproofing first

A glass block shower wall is a good-looking way to separate a shower without a glass screen to squeegee, but the blocks themselves are not the waterproofing. Water runs down the face and finds every joint at the bottom course.

  1. Waterproof the floor and the wall upturns before the blocks go in, so the membrane runs under the kerb the panel stands on.
  2. Set the panel on a raised kerb or a sloped base so water drains towards the floor trap, not under the wall.
  3. Seal every joint fully; open or cracked joints let water into the wall.
  4. Leave the silicone at the base and the edges as a maintenance item that can be renewed.

ClickBina's bathroom waterproofing cost guide explains when a bathroom can be sealed without hacking and when the floor must be redone; a glass block wall is usually part of a hack-and-redo.

Privacy, patterns and light

Clear blocks still distort the view a little; rippled, wave and frosted faces blur it much more. The darker or more textured the face, the less light passes. For a bathroom facing a corridor, a frosted or heavily patterned block gives privacy at night when the light is on inside, which clear blocks do not.

If the wall faces the afternoon sun, glass blocks let heat in as well as light. A small panel is rarely a problem; a large west-facing panel can make the room warmer.

Limits to know before choosing glass blocks

  • No fixings on the face: you cannot drill a glass block to hang a towel rail, shelf or mirror.
  • Repairs: a cracked block is hard to replace without disturbing the ones around it, especially in mortar.
  • Cleaning: textured faces and recessed joints collect soap scum and dust.
  • Supply: sizes and patterns vary by maker; buy enough for the job and a few spares from one batch.
  • Look: the style reads as retro to some eyes; pick a modern pattern or a frameless panel if that matters.

What a glass block wall is compared with

No standard price for glass block walls is published on ClickBina's guides; it depends on the block, the system, the size and the base and waterproofing work. These published figures for the alternatives and the related bathroom work help put a quote in context (indicative 2026, Klang Valley):

Common Questions

Are glass block walls load-bearing?
No. A glass block wall carries its own weight only. It cannot replace a structural wall or support a beam.
Can glass blocks be used in a shower?
Yes, if the floor and upturns are waterproofed first, the panel sits on a kerb that drains to the floor trap, and every joint is sealed.
Mortar or mortarless glass blocks: which is better?
Mortar-laid suits large or curved walls; mortarless spacer systems are faster and neater for smaller straight panels.
Do glass blocks give privacy?
Frosted, wave and heavily patterned blocks blur the view well; clear blocks only distort it a little.
Can I hang things on a glass block wall?
No. Glass blocks cannot be drilled for towel rails, shelves or mirrors; plan fixings on a solid wall instead.
Do glass blocks let air through?
No. A bathroom or kitchen behind glass blocks still needs its own exhaust fan or window.
What does a glass partition cost instead?
ClickBina's room dividers guide puts a frameless tempered glass partition at RM350–RM600 per sq ft (indicative 2026, Klang Valley).
