The square lid in your porch or yard: what it is, who looks after it, and how to deal with a cracked, loose, smelly or buried cover.
📍 We serve KL, Selangor & Putrajaya.

The square metal or concrete lid in your porch, side lane or garden is usually the cover of an inspection chamber: the access point where the house's sewer pipes meet before they run to the public sewer. In a landed home it is the owner's to look after. Covers crack, rock under a car, let out smells, sink below new tiles or get buried, and each of those has a simple fix as long as the chamber stays reachable. ClickBina's drain guide prices a heavy-duty cast or ductile-iron cover at RM150 – RM650 per piece, supply only (indicative 2026, Klang Valley).
Not every lid on the ground is the same thing, and the right fix depends on what is underneath. Lift the cover only if it comes up easily, and look before you call anyone.
| Cover | Where you usually find it | What is underneath | Read next |
|---|---|---|---|
| Inspection chamber (sewer) | Porch, side lane, back yard, usually near the boundary | The house's sewage pipes joining before the public sewer | This page |
| Septic tank cover | Garden or porch of an older house not on the public sewer | A septic tank | Septic tank guide |
| Drain or gully cover | Along the open drain round the house | Rainwater drain | Perimeter drain guide |
| Public sewer manhole | In the road or back lane, outside your lot | The public sewer | Report to the sewer operator |
| Ceiling “manhole” | In a ceiling | Ceiling void access | Ceiling access panel guide |
If your house has a septic tank, read the septic tank repair guide instead. A hatch in the ceiling that builders call a manhole is a different job, covered in the ceiling access panel guide.
ClickBina's broken sewer pipe guide sets out what Indah Water (IWK) says: a house connected to the public sewer has a rectangular metal cover, the inspection chamber, usually outside the compound at the side, rear or front. The pipes up to that chamber and on to the public sewer are the owner's, and IWK mainly maintains the public sewerage pipes. So the cover in your porch is yours to repair and keep accessible.
A manhole in the road or the back lane is different: it belongs to the public system, and a broken or missing public cover is reported to the operator rather than fixed by a homeowner. In a condo or strata landed scheme, shared chambers sit with the management, so report the problem to them first.
| What you notice | Usual cause | Usual fix |
|---|---|---|
| Cracked or broken concrete lid | Lid too light for the load, or old and spalled | Replace the lid, and the frame if it is damaged |
| Cover clanks or rocks when driven over | Frame loose in its bedding, or lid warped | Re-bed the frame in mortar; replace a warped lid |
| Sewer smell around the cover | Gap round the lid, broken seal or cracked frame | Re-seat or replace the cover; check the drains |
| Cover sits below or above new tiles | Frame not reset when the porch was retiled | Lift the frame and reset it to the new finished level |
| Rusted steel cover | Coating gone; constant damp | Replace before it gives way |
| Cover will not lift | Mortar, paint or rust has glued it shut | Free it carefully; do not hammer the frame |
| Cannot find the chamber at all | Tiled, concreted or built over | Trace the pipe route; open it up and fit a proper cover |
A cover that has never been a problem still deserves a look before a porch renovation, because that is when most of these faults are created.
A sewer smell outside the house that is strongest at the cover usually means gas is escaping round the lid or through a cracked frame. Re-seating the lid, or replacing a broken one, often cures it. If the smell is inside the house as well, the cause is more likely a dry floor trap or a vent problem; the drain smell guide walks through those checks.
A chamber that is full, or that fills during rain, is a blockage or a backed-up sewer rather than a cover problem. The sewage backing up guide explains what to look for, and a blocked line is cleared from the chamber.
Many inspection chambers sit in the car porch, where a light cover meant for foot traffic cracks or rocks under a car wheel. Drain covers are made in different load grades, and the one in a driveway has to suit the heaviest vehicle that will cross it. ClickBina's drain grating guide explains load classes and materials.
For a car porch, a heavy-duty cast or ductile-iron cover set in a solid frame is the usual answer. The frame matters as much as the lid: a good lid in a loose frame still rocks and still breaks the tiles round it.
When a porch or yard is retiled or re-screeded, the floor level changes, and the chamber frame has to change with it. If it is not reset, the cover ends up as a step or a dip, it collects water, and the tiles round it crack. The fix is to lift the frame, build the chamber wall up or down, and bed the frame again at the new level before the tiles go down.
A recessed or “tile-in” cover is a tray that takes the same tile as the floor, so the cover almost disappears while still lifting out. It is the tidy way to deal with a cover in the middle of a new porch. Our car porch flooring guide covers the floor itself.
ClickBina's sewer guide is plain about it: covering an inspection chamber is a common mistake, because it is the only way in when the line blocks. If an extension has to go over a pipe route, the pipe and the chamber are diverted first, and structural extensions need the local authority's approval. The side yard landscaping guide gives the same advice for gardens.
These are figures published on ClickBina's drain and sewer guides (indicative 2026, Klang Valley). The cover itself is a small part of most jobs: resetting the frame, the tiles round it and any blockage drive the total.
