13 Ideas for the Upstairs Corridor and Landing

Browse 13 looks for the upstairs corridor, the landing and long passages, then see what each one involves.

📍 We serve KL, Selangor & Putrajaya.

Illustrative concept design: upstairs corridor with white wainscoting, a jute runner and warm LED strips along both skirtings

The corridor is the most forgotten space in many Malaysian double-storey terraces and semi-Ds: a narrow, windowless passage between the bedrooms and the stairs. The ideas that work best bring in light without windows (a skylight, low-level lights, light walls), protect the walls from knocks (wainscoting, a two-tone or darker lower wall), and add storage or a place to sit only where the width allows. These 13 concept designs show upstairs corridors, landings and long passages in modern, classic, contemporary and Scandinavian styles. Use the filters below to narrow them by style or home type.

How to plan a corridor or landing

Measure the width first. In most terraces and semi-Ds the upstairs corridor is just wide enough to walk through with a bag, so storage, benches and consoles only belong where there is spare width, such as at the landing or a widened section. A corridor that is too narrow for furniture still gains a lot from light, colour and a tougher wall finish.

  • Light without windows. A skylight, a tubular skylight, low-level lights or light walls bring a dark corridor to life. Avoid wall lights that stick out into the walking space.
  • Protect the walls. Corridors take knocks from bags, laundry baskets and children. Wainscoting, a washable paint or a darker lower wall hides marks.
  • Doors that do not block. Where bedroom doors swing into a narrow corridor, sliding doors or doors rehung to swing into the room free up the passage.
  • Guide the way at night. Low step lights or an LED strip at the skirting let people walk to the bathroom or stairs without switching on bright ceiling lights.
  • One finish along the run. Keep the same floor and wall finish along the whole corridor so it reads as one clean line.

If your landing is wide enough to become a sitting area, see the family hall and upstairs lounge guide.

Quick pick: which ideas suit your corridor

A corridor usually connects to the stairs and sometimes to a void. The staircase glass railing guide covers balustrades at the landing, the guide to closing or opening a void covers double-height spaces, and the wainscoting design gallery shows panel styles for the corridor walls.

For light, the lighting design gallery covers downlights, wall lights and LED strips, and the skylight cost guide compares fixed, vented and tubular skylights.

Practical limits before you change a corridor

  • Width. Furniture, cabinets and wall fittings eat into a narrow passage. Keep the walking width comfortable for carrying a laundry basket, and more if an older parent uses a walking aid.
  • Walls you cannot cut. A new arch or a wider opening needs the wall checked; some walls carry beams or the floor above.
  • Skylights. A skylight cuts through the roof. Flashing and waterproofing decide whether it leaks, so ask for them to be specified in writing.
  • Balustrades. Any change at a landing or void edge must keep a safe guard height and small gaps.
  • Strata units. In condos, wiring and drilling in the entry passage follow the management's rules.

What corridor upgrades cost

Skylights have published ranges. ClickBina's skylight cost guide gives indicative Klang Valley installed costs of RM1,500 – RM3,500 for a small fixed polycarbonate skylight and RM3,500 – RM7,000 for a small fixed glass skylight, and RM1,800 – RM4,000 for a tubular skylight, which suits corridors with no direct roof access.

Wainscoting, built-in storage, lighting and flooring are quoted per job, because the corridor length, wall condition and wiring routes differ from house to house. Ask for each item to be listed separately so you can phase the work.

How ClickBina can help

We refit corridors and landings as part of our renovation work: we install wainscoting and lighting, build shallow built-in storage and benches, lay new floors and paint the walls. Glass balustrades, sliding doors and skylights are quoted as their own items. Common Questions

How do I brighten a corridor with no window?
Use light walls, add low-level or recessed lights, and consider a skylight or a tubular skylight if the roof is above. A mirror or a light colour at the far end also helps.
What is the most durable wall finish for a corridor?
Wainscoting or a washable paint on the lower wall handles knocks from bags and children. A two-tone wall with the darker colour below hides marks between repaints.
Can I add storage in a narrow upstairs corridor?
Only where there is spare width. Shallow built-in cabinets keep the walkway clear; in a very narrow corridor, use the landing or the end wall instead.
How much does a skylight over a corridor cost?
ClickBina's skylight guide puts a small fixed polycarbonate skylight at RM1,500 – RM3,500 and a tubular skylight at RM1,800 – RM4,000 installed (indicative Klang Valley, 2026).
Are sliding doors a good idea for bedrooms off a corridor?
They stop doors swinging into a narrow passage, but they need clear wall beside each opening and seal less tightly, which matters for noise and aircon.
How do I make a long corridor look shorter?
Paint the far end wall a deeper colour than the side walls, add framed art along the way, or frame the end with an arch or a lit feature.
Are the designs on this page real ClickBina projects?
No. They are illustrative concept designs that show corridor options. Your house is assessed and quoted to its own layout, light and structure.
