Illustrative concept design: japandi bedroom with a low oak bed and linen bedding against a mottled limewash wall, two paper pendants and a lattice screen with a low bench

A japandi bedroom keeps everything low, soft and natural: a bed close to the floor, light oak with one darker or greener accent, linen bedding, paper lights at the bedside and storage that hides behind calm, screen-like doors. In a Malaysian bedroom the practical side matters too: timber that copes with humidity and air-conditioning cycles, an aircon unit you can hide, and window treatments that soften strong sun. These 14 concept designs show low beds and platforms, screens and storage, light and texture, and small-room and kids' ideas. Use the filters below to narrow them by type or by home.

What makes a bedroom japandi

Japandi brings together Japanese restraint and Scandinavian comfort. In a bedroom that means a low horizon, a short palette of natural materials and almost nothing on show. ClickBina's japandi interior guide covers the style across the whole home; this gallery is only about the bedroom, and it avoids repeating the fluted headboard walls and walnut platform beds shown in the bedroom design gallery.

  • Low bed. A futon-height frame or a platform keeps the room calm and the ceiling feeling higher.
  • Screens, not boxes. Shoji-look doors and paper-look wardrobe fronts soften the storage wall.
  • Paper and linen. Paper pendants, linen bedding and a jute or wool rug.
  • One accent. Limewash, grey-green paint or a darker timber, used on one surface only.
  • Hidden services. Aircon behind slats, cables in the wall, a clear bedside.

Low beds, aircon and sleep

Japandi bedrooms often put the bed close to the floor. In our climate that works if air can move under or around the mattress, so a slatted base or a raised platform is safer than a mattress straight on the tiles. Keep the bed out of the aircon's direct stream and, if you hide the unit, follow the airflow and service notes in boxing up aircon trunking. The tatami and platform bed guide covers storage under raised platforms.

Practical limits in a japandi bedroom

  • Getting up. Very low beds are harder for older family members; a platform at sitting height is a compromise.
  • Humidity. Solid pale timber can move and natural mats can mould; choose stable boards and synthetic mats.
  • Paper looks. Use laminate, acrylic or glass made to look like paper, not the real thing.
  • Light control. Bamboo and sheer layers soften light but do not black out the room.
  • Dust. Slats, mats and open shelves need regular cleaning; keep each to one place in the room.

What a japandi bedroom costs

ClickBina's japandi interior guide prices wardrobes and platform-bed or banquette joinery at RM180 – RM600 per ft run depending on material. The tatami platform guide lists platforms at RM280 – RM420 per foot run in laminate, and the bedroom design guide puts a textured or limewash feature wall at RM300 – RM1,200.

For the whole room, the same bedroom guide lists a refresh at around RM2,000 – RM5,000 and adding a built-in wardrobe at RM6,000 – RM15,000. Screens, slatted boxes and window seats are quoted per job. These are indicative Klang Valley figures for 2026.

Common Questions

What is a japandi bedroom?
A bedroom that mixes Japanese restraint with Scandinavian comfort: a low bed, light timber with one accent, linen and paper textures, and storage behind calm, screen-like doors.
Are floor-level beds a good idea in Malaysia?
They can be, if air can move under the mattress. A slatted base or a raised platform avoids damp, and a platform at sitting height is easier for older family members.
How do I hide the aircon in a japandi bedroom?
Box it in vertical oak slats with gaps for the air and a way to lift the cover off for servicing.
Which colours suit a japandi bedroom?
Warm whites, greige and oatmeal with light oak, plus one accent such as limewash, soft grey-green or a darker timber.
Japandi or Muji style for a bedroom?
Muji style is simpler and lighter, with uniform pale wood. Japandi adds a darker or greener accent, more texture and more built-in joinery.
Can a kids' room be japandi?
Yes. Two low beds, a round woven rug, a low open shelf and soft sage or cream bedding keep it calm and safe.
Are the designs on this page real ClickBina projects?
No. They are illustrative concept designs that show japandi bedroom options. Your room is assessed and quoted to its own walls, window and storage needs.
