12 Ideas for Dry and Wet Kitchens

Browse 12 kitchen looks for a kampung or wooden house, from a masonry annex to an outdoor dapur basah, then see what each involves.

📍 We serve KL, Selangor & Putrajaya.

Illustrative concept design: galley kitchen in a masonry annex with white flat-door cabinets, concrete-look worktops, timber louvred windows and an open door to steps up to the timber house

In a kampung house the kitchen usually works best out of the timber and into masonry: a brick annex at ground level behind or beside the house, often with an open-air wet kitchen (dapur basah) under a lean-to roof and a small dry kitchen inside. Cooking on a timber floor is a fire and rot risk, and water on boards leaks into the joists. Damp-tolerant aluminium cabinets, concrete or tiled worktops, a vented gable or a ducted hood for smoke, and floors that fall to a drain finish the job. These 12 concept designs show annex, outdoor and practical ideas. Use the filters below to narrow them by style.

How to plan a kampung house kitchen

Start by taking the wet, hot work out of the timber. ClickBina's kampung house renovation guide says water is the enemy of a timber floor and that most renovations move wet areas into a brick annex or a new brick ground floor, on a concrete slab with proper waterproofing and falls. A kitchen is the room that benefits most.

  • Masonry annex for the main kitchen, behind or beside the timber house, with its own roof.
  • Outdoor dapur basah for frying, pounding, washing and wood-fire cooking, under a lean-to.
  • Small dry kitchen inside for drinks and light cooking, on a tiled bay in a half-brick house.
  • Materials that take damp: aluminium cabinets, concrete or tiled tops, porcelain floors.
  • Air and drainage: a vented gable or a ducted hood, and floors that fall to a drain.

Plan the route between house and kitchen too: steps, a covered walkway and a light, so carrying food and pots is safe in the rain and at night.

Checks before you build

  • Termites under the slab. The renovation guide says to treat the ground under any new brick section before the slab is poured; see termite treatment.
  • Approval. A new annex or extension is building work; check with the council before you build.
  • Smoke and fire. Keep wood fires and gas burners away from timber walls, and give smoke a way out.
  • Drainage. Run wet-kitchen water to a proper drain, not onto the compound by the house posts.

What a kampung kitchen costs

The kampung renovation guide puts a new brick extension or rebuilt section at RM150 – RM350 per sq ft and corrective termite treatment at RM1,500 – RM4,000. For the fit-out, ClickBina's guides quote aluminium cabinets at RM400 – RM700 per foot run, a concrete worktop at RM80 – RM180 per foot run, a new floor drain with proper gradient at RM600 – RM1,500, and fitting a replacement chimney hood at RM350 – RM600, adding RM200 – RM600 where new ductwork through a wall is needed (indicative Klang Valley ranges for 2026).

Common Questions

Can I keep my kitchen inside the timber kampung house?
A small dry kitchen can stay inside if the floor is protected. Heavy cooking and anything wet is better in a masonry annex or outdoor wet kitchen, because water and heat damage timber floors.
What cabinets suit a kampung kitchen?
Aluminium cabinets take damp and do not rot; ClickBina's guide puts them at RM400 – RM700 per foot run. A concrete worktop on brick supports is the traditional, low-cost alternative.
How do I stop smoke filling the kitchen?
Give it a way out: a vented gable high in the roof, a ducted hood over the stove, or an open-sided outdoor kitchen for wood-fire and heavy frying.
Does an outdoor dapur basah need a drain?
Yes. The floor should fall to a floor trap or channel drain connected to a proper drain. ClickBina's guide puts a new floor drain with proper gradient at RM600 – RM1,500.
Do I need approval for a kitchen annex?
A new annex or extension is building work, so check with your council before building, and treat the ground for termites before the slab is poured.
Can I still cook over a wood fire?
Yes, in a brick dapur kayu in an open-sided kitchen, well away from timber walls, with an open gable or high vent for smoke.
Are the designs on this page real ClickBina projects?
No. They are illustrative concept designs that show kitchen options. Your kitchen is assessed and quoted to its own site.
