12 Ideas for a Small Front and Back Yard

Illustrative concept design: front yard of an attached house with beds of ferns, white lilies and a palm, a grass strip and a paved path to the front door

A terrace house garden is two small strips, not one garden: the narrow bed beside the car porch at the front, and the back yard between the kitchen and the back lane. Both sit between the neighbours' walls, most of the front is driveway, and rain from both drains to the shared monsoon drain. The ideas that work here use edges, walls and pots rather than lawn: narrow beds, grass pavers, planters on walls and roofs, creepers on mesh and good drainage. These 12 concept designs show front and back yard looks in tropical, modern, zen and practical styles.

How to plan a garden on a terrace lot

Start by mapping what is left once the car is parked. At the front, the usable ground is usually a strip beside the porch and the corner by the gate. At the back, it is the yard between the kitchen door and the back lane, often already used for laundry. Both are narrow, both are boxed in by the neighbours' walls, and both drain to the shared monsoon drain.

  • Plant the edges. Narrow beds along walls and kerbs give more green than a small square of lawn.
  • Go up. Creepers on mesh, a vertical garden or a planter on the porch roof add green without taking floor.
  • Keep the car space working. Grass pavers or a gravel strip keep the porch usable and green.
  • Drain first. Every bed, trench and planter needs a way for water to leave.
  • Pick plants for the light. A porch roof shades the front; the back yard may get only an hour or two of sun.

This gallery is for the narrow terrace yard. For larger gardens, see the landscape design gallery. If you have an end or corner lot with land at the side, the side yard landscaping guide covers that strip. If you are thinking of roofing the back yard, read back yard roof cover or full extension first, because a roof changes how much light the kitchen gets.

A simple drip irrigation line makes narrow beds and wall planters much easier to keep alive through dry spells.

Practical limits on a terrace yard

  • Drainage. Paved yards shed water fast. Beds, trenches and planters need an outlet; the garden drainage guide shows how a trench or French drain carries water away.
  • Roots. Trees planted close to the house, the drain or the neighbour's wall can damage them; the tree roots guide explains what to watch.
  • Boundary walls. Raising or rebuilding a boundary wall can need council approval; see the boundary wall guide.
  • Planters on structures. A planter on a porch roof or a wall must be waterproofed inside, or it becomes a leak.
  • Shared lines. Anything built on the line between two yards is a joint matter with your neighbour.

What a terrace garden costs

ClickBina's landscape design gallery quotes the landscaping cost guide for a basic tidy front garden of grass, shrubs and edging at RM3,000 – RM8,000, and a front garden with a paved path, planting and lights at RM8,000 – RM18,000.

For materials, the side yard guide lists gravel at RM2 – RM5 per sq ft and a modular vertical garden wall at RM800 – RM3,000 depending on size, and the grass paver guide lists carpet grass at RM1.50 – RM2.50 per sq ft, supply and lay. Re-waterproofing a small planter runs RM800 – RM1,500 and a medium run RM1,500 – RM2,500 in the planter box guide. These are indicative Klang Valley figures; your yard is quoted to its own size and drainage.

Common Questions

Can I have a garden in a terrace house front yard with a car porch?
Yes. Use the edges: a narrow bed along the porch wall, grass pavers under the car, pots in the corner and a planter on the porch roof edge.
What plants suit a shaded terrace front yard?
Under a porch roof the light is low, so ferns, cordylines, snake plants and mondo grass do better than lawn or flowering shrubs that need full sun.
How much does a small terrace front garden cost?
ClickBina's landscaping cost guide puts a basic tidy front garden of grass, shrubs and edging at RM3,000 – RM8,000.
Will a planter on my porch roof leak?
It can if it is not waterproofed inside and drained. Treat it like a small roof: a membrane, a drain outlet and a check every year.
Can I raise the back wall for privacy?
Raising a boundary wall can need council approval. A planter trough or a mesh with creepers above the existing wall is a lighter way to gain privacy, but check with the council before adding height.
Is a tree safe in a terrace front yard?
Choose a small tree, keep it in a large planter or well away from the drain, the house and the neighbour's wall, and prune it so the roots stay modest.
Are the designs on this page real ClickBina projects?
No. They are illustrative concept designs that show terrace garden options. Your yard is assessed and quoted to its own size, sun, drainage and neighbours.
