Illustrative concept design: bathroom with timber-look wall tiles, a grey tiled floor, a glass shower panel, a wall water heater, a wall-hung basin and high louvres

A kampung house bathroom should not sit on timber. The usual answer is a masonry bathroom block at ground level beside or behind the house, or a fully tiled room on a concrete slab in a half-brick house, with a proper waterproofing layer and a floor that falls to a trap. Inside it, the upgrades are the familiar ones: a shower in place of the old water tank, a seated toilet, anti-slip tiles and grab bars for elders, a water heater, and switches kept away from water. These 12 concept designs show block, upgrade and safety ideas. Use the filters below to narrow them by style.

Where a kampung bathroom should go

ClickBina's kampung house renovation guide says bathrooms built on timber boards leak into the joists every day, and that most renovations move wet areas into a brick annex or a new brick ground floor on a concrete slab with proper waterproofing and falls to the floor trap. That decides the first design choice: where the bathroom sits.

  • Masonry block at ground level, beside or behind the house, reached by a short covered path.
  • Inside a half-brick ground floor, where the lower storey is already masonry.
  • Upstairs on a new concrete slab, only with a Professional Engineer's design.
  • Outside washroom for garden and field use, in addition to the main bathroom.

Once the room is in masonry, the design is a normal bathroom: waterproofing, falls, tiles, fittings, ventilation and safe wiring.

Checks before you build

  • Structure. A bathroom on an upper floor of an old house needs a concrete slab designed by a Professional Engineer; see replacing a timber floor with concrete.
  • Termites. Treat the ground under a new masonry block before the slab is poured.
  • Drainage. Connect to the septic tank or sewer properly; do not run waste water onto the compound.
  • Elders. Use the home modification checklist for elderly parents for door widths, grab bars and lighting.

What a kampung bathroom costs

Published figures on ClickBina's guides give the scale (indicative Klang Valley ranges for 2026): a new brick section at RM150 – RM350 per sq ft from the kampung renovation guide; a new WC supplied and installed from about RM350 – RM1,200, and full hack-and-redo waterproofing at RM4,500 – RM9,000 per bathroom; anti-slip porcelain tiles at RM18 – RM35 per sq ft; mosaic niche work at RM20 – RM45 per sq ft; an instant heater at RM280 – RM530 installed, or RM500 – RM950 with a pump; and Professional Engineer's drawings at RM2,000 – RM8,000 where a slab is needed.

A new bathroom block is priced as building work plus the bathroom fit-out, so ask for the two to be listed separately.

Common Questions

Can I build a bathroom inside my wooden house?
Not on the timber floor. Build it in masonry at ground level, inside a half-brick ground floor, or upstairs only on a concrete slab designed by a Professional Engineer.
How do I stop a kampung bathroom leaking?
Put it on a concrete slab with a proper waterproofing layer, falls to the floor trap and tiles on top. Waterproofing over timber boards does not hold.
Should I replace the old water tank (kolah) with a shower?
Most families do. The floor is re-laid with a fall to the trap and re-waterproofed, and a shower with a glass panel takes the tank's place.
How do I make a kampung bathroom safe for elderly parents?
A seated toilet, grab bars fixed into solid masonry, anti-slip floor tiles, a bench in the shower and a level entry with no step.
Why is my kampung shower so weak?
Many kampung houses have low water pressure. An instant heater with a pump helps one shower; ClickBina's guide puts it at RM500 – RM950 installed. Weak water at every tap needs a booster pump.
Can I have a separate wudhu area?
Yes. A row of taps over a low tiled trough with its own drain and an anti-slip floor works well beside a separate WC.
Are the designs on this page real ClickBina projects?
No. They are illustrative concept designs that show bathroom options. Your bathroom is assessed and quoted to its own site.
