Illustrative concept design: open-plan condo with cream travertine-look floor tiles and a living wall clad in travertine-look slabs behind a sofa

Travertine is a cream, beige, walnut or silver natural stone with small natural pores and soft banding. In a Malaysian home you can have it two ways: real travertine, a soft calcium stone that is honed, filled and sealed, or travertine-look porcelain, a printed tile that copies the colour and pores but takes water, wear and cleaning like any good porcelain floor. Most floors, bathrooms and kitchens in condos and terrace homes now use the porcelain look; real stone suits dry living areas and owners happy to seal it. Use the filters below to narrow the 13 concept designs by style or home type.

Real travertine or travertine-look porcelain?

Real travertine forms where mineral springs deposit calcium, which is why it carries pores, small holes and soft bands of colour. Slabs and tiles are sold in several finishes: honed and filled (smooth, the pores filled with a matching filler), tumbled (soft, worn edges for a rustic or resort look) and polished. The cut matters too: a vein cut shows long straight bands, a cross cut shows a cloudier pattern.

Travertine-look porcelain copies all of that on a dense, low-absorption tile. It does not etch when lime juice or vinegar is spilled, it needs no sealing, and the same look is easy to match across a floor, a bathroom wall and a stair. The trade-off is that the pattern repeats, and close up it is still a print on a tile, not stone.

  • Choose real travertine for a dry living room, foyer or feature wall where you want genuine stone and are willing to seal it and clean it with stone-safe products.
  • Choose travertine-look porcelain for bathrooms, kitchens, wet kitchens, balconies and any floor that sees heavy use, cooking oil or harsh cleaners.

Practical limits to check before you commit

  • Acid and stains. Real travertine is a calcium stone. Lime, vinegar and acidic descalers etch it, so a real-stone bathroom or kitchen needs stone-safe cleaners. Porcelain does not have this problem.
  • Sealing. Real travertine, especially tumbled stone and mosaic, needs a penetrating sealer after laying and again from time to time. Ask for the sealer to be named on the quote.
  • Grip. A honed look is not the same as an anti-slip surface. For showers, wet kitchens and outdoor areas choose a textured tile; see how R ratings work.
  • Substrate. Large tiles and wall slabs need a flat, sound base, and an uneven slab or wall shows through.
  • Old tiles. Hacking out the old floor is priced as its own line; if the old floor is flat and sound, tiling over it without hacking may be possible.
  • Batch and shade. Real stone varies from tile to tile and porcelain varies between batches, so order the whole area at once and lay out a few tiles to check the mix before fixing.

What these travertine designs cost

ClickBina's floor tile replacement cost guide gives supply-and-lay rates by tile grade (indicative Klang Valley ranges for 2026). Travertine-look porcelain sits in the porcelain band of RM18 – RM35 per sq ft, and travertine mosaic in the mosaic band of RM20 – RM45 per sq ft. The large-format tile guide adds about RM2 – RM5 per sq ft of labour for the largest tiles and slabs, because they are harder to handle, cut and level.

Real travertine is not priced on its own in any ClickBina guide. The floor tile guide's natural stone line, RM30 – RM80+ per sq ft supplied and laid, is written for marble and granite, so treat it only as a rough marker; a real travertine floor is quoted on the stone, the finish and the sealing you choose. Hacking out old tiles, levelling, waterproofing, patterned layouts such as the French pattern, stair nosings and outdoor falls are separate lines on a proper quote.

Common Questions

Is travertine good for Malaysian homes?
Yes, in the right place. Real travertine suits dry living rooms, foyers and feature walls if you are willing to seal it. For bathrooms, kitchens and outdoor areas, travertine-look porcelain gives the same colour without the etching and sealing.
What is the difference between travertine and marble?
Both are calcium stones, but travertine has natural pores and soft bands of colour and is usually honed or tumbled, while marble shows veins and is often polished. Both etch with acids and need sealing.
Can I use real travertine in a bathroom?
It can be done, but it needs sealing, stone-safe cleaners and a textured or mosaic floor for grip. Most homes choose travertine-look porcelain for bathrooms because it takes water and cleaning products without marking.
Does travertine-look porcelain look real?
From a normal distance, good travertine-look porcelain is convincing, especially in a matt finish. Ask how many different faces the tile has, so the pattern does not repeat too often across a large floor.
Do I need to seal travertine?
Real travertine, yes: a penetrating sealer after laying and again from time to time, more often on tumbled stone and mosaic. Porcelain in a travertine look does not need sealing.
Which travertine look suits a small condo?
Large cream or ivory travertine-look tiles with thin joints keep a small floor calm and make the room feel larger. Save darker walnut tones and busy French patterns for one area.
Are the designs on this page real ClickBina projects?
No. They are illustrative concept designs that show style options. Your floor or wall is measured and quoted on its own size, substrate and tile or stone grade.
