12 Kitchenette Ideas for One-Room Units

Browse 12 kitchenette looks for a studio, SOHO or SOFO unit, from a kitchen hidden behind doors to a bar counter that divides the room.

📍 We serve KL, Selangor & Putrajaya.

Illustrative concept design: one-wall studio kitchenette with white cabinets, an oak-look worktop, an induction hob and sink, a slim lit hood and the bed zone by city windows

In a studio, SOHO or SOFO unit the kitchen is a kitchenette along one wall of the room you sleep in, so it has to be compact, quiet and easy to hide. Many SOHO units have kitchenette-grade plumbing risers and no gas, so the usual set-up is a compact sink, an induction hob, a slim hood and good storage, with the sink and riser positions fixed by the building. Doors that close the kitchen off, a bar counter that divides it from the bed, and lighting that keeps the two zones separate do the rest. These 12 concept designs show hidden, compact and open kitchenettes. Use the filters below to narrow them by style.

How to design a studio or SOHO kitchenette

Start with what the building allows. ClickBina's SOHO and SOFO renovation guide warns that many SOHO units are zoned commercial-residential and have kitchenette-grade plumbing risers that may not support a full wet kitchen sink and hob, and that gas and heavy cooking exhaust may not be allowed. A dry kitchenette with a compact sink, an induction hob and good storage suits most units.

  • Keep it on one wall where the risers already are; moving a sink in a high-rise is rarely worth it.
  • Hide it behind full-height or sliding doors if the kitchen faces the bed.
  • Go induction and compact: a two-zone hob, a slim hood, an under-counter fridge.
  • Divide the room with a bar counter or a slatted screen rather than a full wall.
  • Light by zone, so the kitchen can be bright while the bed side stays dim.

For the rest of the unit, the small condo design gallery and the wall bed guide cover layouts and fold-away furniture that suit one-room homes.

Building rules before you start

  • Management approval. The SOHO guide says to apply to the management before any work, with the scope and drawings for any plumbing or electrical change, and expect a refundable renovation deposit.
  • Risers and gas. Ask about the drain riser size, whether gas is available, and whether heavy cooking exhaust is allowed.
  • Exhaust. A hood may only be able to recirculate; heavy frying in an open studio is best avoided.
  • Power. An induction hob and a built-in oven together may need a circuit upgrade; ask an electrician.

What a studio kitchenette costs

ClickBina's guides quote (indicative Klang Valley ranges for 2026): kitchen cabinets per foot run from about RM180 – RM300 for melamine to RM280 – RM420 for laminate; a floor-to-ceiling laminate pantry at roughly RM448 – RM924 per foot; and fitting a replacement chimney hood where no new duct is needed at RM350 – RM600. The SOHO guide lists serviced-apartment renovation deposits on ClickBina's KL guide at RM1,500 – RM3,000.

A short run of cabinets keeps a kitchenette affordable even with better hardware, so spend on hinges, drawer runners and a good worktop rather than length.

Common Questions

Can I have a full kitchen in a SOHO unit?
Sometimes not. Many SOHO units have kitchenette-grade plumbing risers that may not support a full wet kitchen sink and hob, and gas may not be available. Ask the management before planning one.
What hob suits a studio kitchenette?
An induction hob is the usual choice: no gas, less heat in the room and easy to clean. Check the circuit can take it.
Do I need a hood in a studio?
Yes, but it may only be able to recirculate if there is no duct. It filters grease, not heat or steam, so keep heavy frying to a minimum.
How do I hide the kitchen from the bed?
Full-height or sliding doors in front of the kitchenette, or a bar counter and slatted screen between the two zones, with separate lighting.
Where can the washing machine go in a SOHO?
In a tall ventilated cabinet beside the kitchenette, with a drain point and a leak tray, if the unit has no service yard.
How much does a studio kitchenette cost?
ClickBina's guides put cabinets at about RM180 – RM300 per foot run for melamine and RM280 – RM420 for laminate (indicative 2026, Klang Valley); a short run keeps it affordable.
Are the designs on this page real ClickBina projects?
No. They are illustrative concept designs that show kitchenette options. Your unit is assessed and quoted to its own building rules.
