Wet Kitchen Design Ideas
for Malaysian Homes

Illustrative concept design: galley wet kitchen with light grey tiles, a gas hob under a chimney hood on one side and a steel sink on the other

A good wet kitchen design starts with how you cook, not how it looks. Heavy wok cooking needs a strong hood ducted outside, a floor that drains and cabinets that do not swell in steam and water. Most terrace houses use a galley or U-shaped room at the back; condos often separate the wet side with a glass partition; semi-Ds and bungalows may build a rear extension. Use the filters below to narrow the 12 concept designs by style or home type.

How to choose a wet kitchen design

Plan the wet kitchen around three things before you choose a colour: where the smoke goes, where the water goes and what the cabinets are made of. Those decide whether the room still looks good after years of daily wok cooking.

  • Galley or U-shape for the narrow rear kitchens of most terrace houses. Put the hob and the sink on separate runs so splashes and oil stay apart.
  • L-shape when one wall has a window: the sink goes under the window and the hob goes on the side wall, under a hood.
  • Glass partition in a condo with an open kitchen, to keep the wet side's smoke and smell away from the living room.
  • Rear extension in a semi-D or bungalow with space at the back, when the existing kitchen is simply too small.

Then choose the finish. Stainless steel and aluminium cabinets shrug off steam and water; laminate on ordinary board is cheaper but swells if water gets into the edges. Dark and glossy surfaces show splashes, while mid-tone matt finishes hide them. See the wet and dry kitchen guide for how the two kitchens share the work.

Practical limits to check before you commit

  • Smoke and grease. A wet kitchen needs a hood that matches your cooking and a duct to the outside. A weak or recirculating hood leaves grease on every wall; the hood and hob cost guide covers the choices.
  • Water on the floor. If the floor is washed down, it must fall to a drain and be waterproofed under the tiles. Read the wet kitchen floor waterproofing guide before you choose tiles.
  • Cabinet material. Standard melamine board swells in a wet kitchen. Moisture-resistant plywood, PVC board, aluminium or stainless steel last longer; stainless or aluminium cabinets are the most water-proof.
  • Approvals. A glass partition in a condo may need management consent. A rear kitchen extension adds structure and needs local authority approval.
  • Gas, water and power. Moving the hob or sink means moving pipes and points. Plan those trades with the layout, not after the cabinets are ordered.

What these wet kitchen designs cost

ClickBina's wet kitchen cost guide splits the cost by scope. In its scope table, a basic glass or aluminium partition across an existing kitchen is RM8,000 – RM15,000; a mid-range build with a new walled wet-kitchen room, full tiling, moisture-resistant plywood cabinets, hood, hob, plumbing and electrical is RM25,000 – RM40,000; and a premium rear extension is RM45,000 – RM70,000+. These are indicative Klang Valley ranges for 2026.

Cabinet material moves the price most once the room exists. The same guide prices wet-kitchen cabinets per running ft: standard melamine RM180 – RM320 (it advises against melamine in a wet kitchen), moisture-resistant plywood RM350 – RM600, PVC or solid surface board RM500 – RM850, and aluminium-frame cabinets RM700 – RM1,300+. Stainless worktops, wok stations and skylights are priced to the specific design.

Common Questions

What is the difference between a wet kitchen and a dry kitchen?
The wet kitchen is where the heavy cooking happens: wok frying, boiling, washing and cleaning fish or meat. The dry kitchen is for light cooking, drinks and serving, often open to the dining area. Many Malaysian homes have both.
Which layout is best for a small wet kitchen?
A galley or compact U-shape uses a narrow terrace kitchen well. Put the hob and sink on different runs, keep the walkway clear, and use tall cabinets for storage so the worktops stay free.
Which cabinet material lasts longest in a wet kitchen?
Aluminium and stainless steel cabinets handle water and steam best. Moisture-resistant plywood and PVC board are the middle ground. Standard melamine board tends to swell and is not advised for a wet kitchen.
Do I need a hood in a wet kitchen?
Yes, for any regular wok or deep-fry cooking. Choose a hood strong enough for your cooking and duct it to the outside, otherwise grease settles on walls, ceilings and cabinets.
Can I add a wet kitchen to a condo?
Often yes, as a glass or aluminium partition that separates the wet side of an open kitchen. Check with the management first, and plan the hood duct route and the waterproofing, because a condo kitchen floor sits above a neighbour's unit.
Are the designs on this page real ClickBina projects?
No. They are illustrative concept designs that show style options. Your wet kitchen is planned and quoted to your own space, plumbing and cooking habits.
