The wet kitchen sees more standing water than a guest bathroom and is usually built like a dry room. This is the floor stack that fixes that — and the bucket test that tells you whether yours works.

Ask a Malaysian household how the wet kitchen gets cleaned and you will usually hear some version of the same answer: the floor gets hosed or splashed down and pushed towards the trap with a squeegee. Now ask how that floor was built, and in most homes it was built like any other interior floor — slab, thin screed, tile adhesive, tiles. No falls worth the name, no membrane, and a floor trap installed as a drain rather than as the termination point of a waterproofing system.
The reason is budgetary and it repeats on almost every project. Waterproofing is understood as a bathroom item. When the renovation budget tightens, the two bathrooms keep their membranes and the kitchen quietly loses its one, on the reasoning that a kitchen is not a wet room. In a Malaysian home with a genuine dapur basah, that reasoning is simply wrong: the wet kitchen sees more standing water in a week than a guest bathroom sees in a month, plus grease, plus heat, plus a washing machine.
The second reason is that the failure is slow and quiet. A bathroom leak announces itself on the neighbour’s ceiling. A kitchen floor without a membrane spends years wetting the screed, the skirting, the base of the cabinets and the wall behind them before anything shows — and when it does show, it usually shows as swollen cabinet carcasses or a damp patch on the far side of the wall rather than as a drip. By then the diagnosis is not obvious, which is why damp and mould on a wall and a leaking kitchen floor turn out to be the same job more often than people expect.

Everything that matters about a wet floor is decided in the order the layers go down and what each one is asked to do.

Grout is not waterproof and was never meant to be; it is a joint filler that lets a small amount of water through as a matter of routine. That is fine when there is a membrane underneath to catch it, and it is the whole problem when there is not. Grouting versus waterproofing covers the distinction in full.
A membrane keeps water out of the structure. Falls keep water off the floor in the first place, and the two are not interchangeable — a perfectly waterproofed floor that holds a puddle is still a floor whose grout, adhesive and skirting are sitting in water for hours every day.
You do not need an instrument to check yours. Tip a bucket of water onto the floor and watch it. On a floor with proper falls the water moves visibly towards the trap and is gone in seconds, leaving a damp surface and no standing pools. On a flat floor it spreads outwards and then stops, and half an hour later there are still shallow puddles in the middle of the room or in a corner. If you can see standing water anywhere five minutes after the bucket, the falls are inadequate, and no coating applied over the top will change that.
Where the water goes matters as much as how fast. Watch specifically for water heading towards the doorway into the dry kitchen or the living area, towards the cabinet plinths, or towards an external wall. A floor that drains towards the trap and away from the cabinets is doing its job; a floor that drains under the sink unit is delivering water to the one place you cannot see it.
Falls are also the reason a “coat it and hope” retrofit is limited. Correcting falls means adding or replacing screed, which means the tiles come up. Any contractor who promises to fix ponding with a liquid membrane is describing a product that fills low spots, not a floor that drains.

Note how many of those are edges and holes rather than open floor. The pattern is identical to bathrooms: the flat middle of a wet floor almost never fails, and the details do. The whole point of a Malaysian two-kitchen layout is that heavy cooking and heavy washing stay in one room. That only works if the floor agrees. In too many builds the tiles run straight through from the wet kitchen into the dry kitchen at a single level, with nothing at the opening but a change of tile pattern — so every time the floor is washed down, water crosses into a room with no membrane, no falls and often a timber-based cabinet run.
Three ways to handle it, in descending order of effectiveness. A step down into the wet kitchen is the most robust: gravity does the work permanently and nothing has to be maintained. A kerb or upstand at the opening is the common retrofit, and it works provided the membrane is carried up and over it rather than stopping at its face. A reverse fall for the last stretch of floor before the opening is the minimum: shape the screed so the last half metre drains back into the room rather than out of it. What does not work is a strip of sealant across the doorway, which lasts until the first time somebody drags a chair over it.
The same logic applies at any door from the wet kitchen to a yard or a back porch, and at the sliding door to a service balcony. Water that leaves the wet zone becomes somebody else’s problem — usually the skirting, the door frame and, if the flooring beyond is laminate, the flooring itself. In a condominium the yard is often the wettest floor in the unit and the least considered. It holds the washing machine, it takes the mop bucket, it catches rain through the grille in a storm, and in many layouts it sits directly above somebody’s yard on the floor below. It deserves the same floor stack as a bathroom and rarely gets it.
Three things are worth checking there specifically. First, the washing machine drain: a discharge hose hooked over the edge of a trap that cannot swallow a full pump-out surge means the excess goes across the floor, every wash. Second, the trap capacity and cleanliness: kitchen and laundry traps collect grease and lint, and a trap that drains slowly turns every wash into a shallow flood. Third, rain ingress through an open yard grille, which means the yard floor needs to drain properly even when nobody is using it.
If the yard is above another unit, treat it exactly as you would a bathroom floor — the mechanism and the consequences are the same, and the questions of access and cost between two units are covered on inter-floor leakage. Apartment and flat waterproofing covers the strata context more generally.
If the kitchen is being renovated, the floor is already coming up and the marginal cost of doing this properly is the membrane and a day of programme. That is the cheapest this work will ever be, by a very large margin, because the expensive part of a retrofit is never the membrane — it is the demolition, the disposal, the retiling and the fortnight without a kitchen.
The sequence during a renovation: strip to the slab; repair any cracks in the slab; lay the screed to falls and check them with water, not just a level; prime; apply the membrane in the specified number of coats with reinforcement at the wall junction, the corners and every penetration; turn the membrane up the walls behind the tile line and over any kerb; take it into the trap body; cure it for the period the manufacturer specifies; run a ponding test; then tile.
Two decisions are worth making deliberately rather than by default. Where the membrane sits — over the slab under the screed, or over the screed under the tiles — is a genuine choice with a trade-off: under the screed it is better protected but any water that gets in soaks the screed above it, while over the screed it catches water sooner but has to survive the tiling. Ask your contractor which they are doing and why. And how far up the wall the membrane goes: at the very least high enough to cover the skirting line, and higher behind the sink and the washing machine where splashing is constant. Most people arrive at this page with a finished kitchen, not a stripped one. The options divide by whether the falls are acceptable.
An honest limitation of the tile-over coating route: it changes the surface. Most systems that are genuinely waterproof are not tiles, and they look like what they are. In a wet kitchen behind a door that is usually acceptable; in an open-plan kitchen it may not be.
Two tests, and neither is optional on a floor that sits above another room.
The ponding test proves the membrane. Plug the trap, hold water across the whole floor at an even shallow depth, pencil the starting level on the tile, and give it a full day or two while somebody checks the ceiling below and the far side of the adjoining walls. A drop in the marked level or any damp appearing means the work is not finished. Do this before the tiles go down, when a repair is still cheap.
The bucket test proves the falls, and it is done after tiling. Tip water across the floor and watch it reach the trap. No standing water anywhere after a couple of minutes is a pass. Puddles are a fail, and a fail found on handover day is a conversation; a fail found a year later is a demolition.
Run the trap on its own as well — pour water directly into it and check underneath — because a ponding test with the trap plugged does not test the trap. And keep the photographs. How long waterproofing lasts covers what to expect from the system afterwards.

Which system suits a kitchen floor is mostly a question of movement and exposure. A cementitious slurry at RM6 – RM10 per sq ft is rigid and bonds well to sound concrete, which makes it a sensible choice on a stable slab with no history of cracking. A flexible two-part membrane at RM8 – RM14 per sq ft tolerates the hairline movement you get at a wall junction and around a trap, which is where floors crack. Liquid polyurethane at RM10 – RM18 per sq ft is seamless and the most forgiving of an awkward shape with several penetrations. What those bands do not include is everything around the membrane: hacking and disposal, screed to correct the falls, resetting or replacing the trap, tiling, a kerb at the threshold, and moving the cabinets out and back. A wet kitchen floor quote should state: the floor area in square feet; whether the existing tiles are being removed or coated over; the preparation method, and specifically how grease is being removed; whether the screed falls are being corrected and how they will be verified; the membrane system, the number of coats and the dry film thickness or coverage rate; where reinforcement is used — wall junction, corners, penetrations; the upstand height on the walls; how the membrane terminates at the floor trap; whether a kerb is being formed at the dry-kitchen threshold; the curing period before tiling; whether a ponding test is included and for how long; and the making good, including the cabinets that had to come out.
The false economies to refuse, in rough order of how often we see them. Skipping the kitchen because the bathrooms are done — the mistake this whole page exists to argue against. Coating over grease, which produces a peeling membrane inside a year. Stopping the membrane at the cabinet line, so the one part of the floor you can never inspect is the one part that is not protected. Treating grout as waterproofing. Leaving the falls alone because correcting them means lifting tiles. And skipping the ponding test to save a day — the cheapest day in the whole programme. A wet kitchen floor is a system with consumable parts, and three of them want attention on a routine you can remember.
Monthly: clear the floor trap properly — lift the grate, remove the grease and lint, flush it. A slow trap is the single most common reason a well-built floor starts ponding. Every few months: run the bucket test and watch where the water goes; it takes two minutes and it catches a settling floor or a blocking trap early. Check the sealant at the wall junction and at the cabinet plinths, and replace it when it lifts or blackens. Annually: look at the grout across the whole floor, particularly around the trap and at the threshold, and rake out and replace any that has crumbled. Look under the sink unit with a torch. Check the washing machine hoses and connections while you are down there.
