How Thick Should Waterproofing Be?
Coats, Coverage & Dry-Film Thickness (2026)

The same pail spread twice as far looks identical on the day. Here is how to make sure your membrane is thick enough.

📍 We serve KL, Selangor & Putrajaya.

Wet-film gauge checking the thickness of a freshly applied waterproofing membrane

Waterproofing works only at its designed thickness, and that thickness depends on the system: a liquid PU roof membrane is typically 1.2–2mm, polyurea needs 1.5–2mm minimum, torch-on sheets are factory-made at 3–4 mm, and one popular flexible cementitious membrane specifies a minimum 1.0 mm dry film from at least two coats. Ask for the product, the coats and the coverage rate in writing, and check the pail count against the area. ClickBina's published rates for a cementitious system are RM8 – RM14 per sq ft (indicative 2026, Klang Valley).

Why thickness decides whether waterproofing works

A waterproofing membrane is a thin layer that has to bridge hairline cracks, flex as the building moves and keep water out for years. Every one of those jobs depends on there being enough material on the surface. Spread the same pail over twice the area and the membrane looks identical on the day, but it is half as thick and much more likely to tear at the first crack.

That is why ClickBina's liquid membrane guide puts it bluntly: a torch-on sheet's thickness was fixed in a factory, but a liquid membrane's thickness is decided by the applicator on the day. Stretching coverage is the most common way a correctly chosen product still fails.

Typical thickness by system

SystemTypical thicknessWhere the figure comes from
Flexible cementitious membrane (bathrooms)Minimum 1.0 mm dry film, from at least 0.75 mm wet film per coatOne popular product's datasheet, quoted in the Davco K10 Plus guide
Liquid PU membrane (exposed roofs)Typically 1.2–2mmClickBina liquid membrane guide
Polyurea spray1.5–2mm minimum; often 1.5–3mmClickBina polyurea guide
Brushed bitumen coating1–2 mm at bestClickBina bituminous waterproofing guide
Self-adhesive bitumen sheet1.5–2 mm, overlappedClickBina bituminous waterproofing guide
Torch-on bitumen sheet3–4 mm, factory-madeClickBina bituminous waterproofing guide

These are typical figures from ClickBina's system guides. The figure that binds your job is the one on the datasheet of the product actually used, so ask for it by name.

Wet film, dry film and why they differ

Liquid membranes are applied wet and lose volume as they cure. The wet film is what the crew lays down; the dry film is what is left to keep water out. The Davco K10 Plus guide gives a clear example: a minimum 1.0 mm total dry film thickness, built from a minimum 0.75 mm wet film per coat. Two thin coats that skimp on the wet film never add up to the dry film the product was tested at.

Sheet membranes avoid the question, because their thickness is set in the factory. That is part of why torch-on remains popular on large, simple flat roofs, and why liquid systems reward a disciplined crew more than any other method.

How many coats, and why two is the floor

Almost every liquid and cementitious system asks for at least two coats, with the second applied across the first. One coat always has pinholes and thin patches; the second coat closes them. ClickBina's cementitious waterproofing guide describes two full coats, the second brushed at right angles to the first once the first is touch-dry.

  • Different colours per coat make missed areas visible and let you count the coats.
  • Respect the time between coats; a second coat on a wet first coat can trap moisture.
  • More coats on details: corners, drains and pipe penetrations need reinforcement as well as thickness.

Coverage: the arithmetic that exposes a thin job

Datasheets state coverage as kilograms or litres per square metre per coat. That makes thickness checkable before a single coat goes on: measure the area, multiply by the coverage rate and the number of coats, and you know how many pails the job needs. If the crew brings half that number, the membrane will be thin.

Upturns, corners and the details that leak first

Thickness on the open floor is only half the job. Water finds the junctions: wall-floor corners, the floor trap, pipe penetrations and door thresholds. ClickBina's flexible membrane guide says upturns should rise 150–300 mm at walls and door thresholds, with mesh reinforcement at junctions and outlets.

At cracks and moving joints the Davco datasheet calls for a 50 mm wide polyethylene or polypropylene tape, so the membrane is unbonded across the joint and any movement is spread over a wider strip of film rather than concentrated at a hairline.

How an owner can check thickness on site

  1. Get the product name, coats and coverage in the quotation before work starts.
  2. Count the pails delivered and the empty pails afterwards against the arithmetic.
  3. Ask the crew to use contrasting colours for each coat.
  4. Ask whether they use a wet-film gauge on liquid membranes; serious applicators do.
  5. Look at corners, drains and pipes before the screed or tiles cover them.
  6. Insist on a ponding test before anything is tiled.

ClickBina's questions to ask a waterproofing contractor lists the wording to put in a quotation so these checks are agreed in advance.

The ponding test: the only proof that counts

Thickness checks reduce the risk; a ponding test proves the result. The cementitious waterproofing guide describes the area being flooded with 25–50 mm of water and left for 24–48 hours while the ceiling below is checked for damp marks. A membrane that passes the ponding test before tiling is a membrane that was applied thick enough where it matters.

What the main systems cost

ClickBina's published supply-and-apply rates (indicative 2026, Klang Valley) show that the right thickness is already in a fair price; a quote far below these ranges usually means less material.

Small areas cost more per square foot because preparation and testing take the same effort whatever the size. ClickBina's waterproofing cost guide explains minimum job charges and how to compare quotes fairly.

What to send on WhatsApp for a quote

  • Your area and whether the property is a condo, apartment or landed house.
  • Which part needs waterproofing: bathroom, wet kitchen, balcony, flat roof or planter.
  • The rough size in square feet, and whether it is tiled or exposed.
  • Whether there is a leak now, and where it shows.
  • Any quotation you already have, so the system and coats can be compared.

Common Questions

How thick should bathroom waterproofing be?
It depends on the product. One popular flexible cementitious membrane specifies a minimum 1.0 mm dry film from at least two coats; always check the datasheet of the product actually used.
How many coats of waterproofing are needed?
At least two for liquid and cementitious systems, the second applied across the first, plus reinforcement at corners, drains and pipes.
What is dry film thickness in waterproofing?
The thickness left after a liquid membrane cures. It is less than the wet film applied, which is why datasheets state a minimum wet film per coat.
How thick is a torch-on membrane?
Torch-on sheets are factory-made at 3–4 mm, so their thickness does not depend on the applicator.
How do I know if my contractor applied enough waterproofing?
Compare the pails used with the area times the coverage rate and coats, ask for contrasting coat colours, and insist on a ponding test before tiling.
How high should waterproofing go up the wall?
ClickBina's flexible membrane guide says upturns should rise 150–300 mm at walls and door thresholds; shower walls are waterproofed higher.
How much does waterproofing cost per sq ft in Malaysia?
ClickBina's published rates are RM8–RM14 per sq ft for cementitious, RM12–RM20 for PU liquid membrane and RM10–RM18 for torch-on (indicative 2026, Klang Valley).
