Illustrative concept design: flat roof terrace with rendered planters of palms and grasses along the parapet and two loungers at sunset

A rooftop garden turns a flat concrete roof into usable space, but on a Malaysian roof the design starts underneath: the waterproofing, the drainage and the weight the slab can carry. Once those are right, the roof can take raised planters, artificial turf, deck tiles on pedestals, a herb garden, a BBQ corner, shade and lighting. These 13 concept designs show roof gardens and terraces on terraces, semi-Ds, bungalows and condo penthouses in modern, tropical, edible and entertaining styles. Use the filters below to narrow them by style or home type.

How to plan a rooftop garden

Start under the finish. A roof garden that leaks into the bedrooms below is a failure however good it looks, so the first questions are whether the membrane is sound, whether water drains to the outlets, and how much weight the slab can carry. Only then choose the planting, the floor and the furniture.

  • Weight. Wet soil, large planters and built-in counters are heavy. Have the structure checked before adding anything heavy, and place heavy items over beams or walls.
  • Waterproofing first. Fix or renew the membrane before planters, turf or deck go on top; it is much harder to reach afterwards.
  • Keep the water moving. Raised deck tiles, planters on feet and turf that lifts all let rain reach the drains.
  • Shade and wind. Roofs are hot and exposed. Plan shade, wind-tolerant plants and furniture that will not blow about.
  • Access. Getting soil, plants and materials up a staircase or through a hatch shapes what is practical.

A roof garden pulls in several specialist jobs. The rooftop terrace waterproofing guide covers the membrane under a terrace, the flat roof ponding guide covers falls and drains, and the planter box waterproofing guide covers built-in planters.

For what goes on top, see the artificial turf guide, the garden irrigation guide and the retractable awning guide.

Rules and practical limits before you build on a roof

  • Structure. A flat roof was designed for a certain load. Heavy planters, soil, water features or counters may need an engineer's check.
  • Approvals. A permanent roof, a pergola or an enclosed room on the roof can need council approval; in condos, the management must agree first.
  • Membrane protection. Nothing should be screwed or bolted through the membrane without proper detailing at each fixing.
  • Safety at the edge. Keep the parapet or balustrade at a safe height, and do not place climbable planters or benches where children can reach the edge.
  • Drains. Keep every roof outlet clear and reachable; leaves and soil from planters block them fast.

What a rooftop garden costs

The base layer has published ranges. ClickBina's rooftop terrace waterproofing guide puts the membrane system at RM8 – RM20 per sq ft, with screed and finishes on top, and a full lift-and-redo of an existing tiled terrace at roughly RM25 – RM45 per sq ft. The roof garden guide adds drainage cell and geotextile at RM8 – RM15 per sq ft over a new membrane (indicative Klang Valley ranges for 2026).

For the garden itself, the planter box guide puts large or rooftop planters at RM2,500 – RM3,000 to re-waterproof, the irrigation guide lists a drip kit at RM400 – RM800, the retractable awning guide puts a fabric canopy at RM400 – RM900 per metre run, and the decking guide prices basic-to-mid WPC decking at RM30 – RM60 per sq ft installed.

Common Questions

Can I put a garden on my flat roof?
Usually, if the membrane is sound, the roof drains properly and the structure can take the weight. Start with light options such as planters on feet and deck tiles, and get heavy additions checked first.
Will a roof garden cause leaks?
It can if the waterproofing is old or the drains get blocked. Renew the membrane before building, keep outlets clear, and use finishes that let you inspect the membrane later.
What is the lightest way to make a roof terrace usable?
Deck tiles on pedestals, artificial turf and potted plants in lightweight planters. They add little weight and let rain reach the drains.
How much does rooftop waterproofing cost?
ClickBina's rooftop terrace guide puts the membrane system at RM8 – RM20 per sq ft, with screed and finishes on top (indicative Klang Valley, 2026).
Do I need approval for a pergola on my roof?
A permanent roof or an enclosed structure on the roof can need council approval, and in a condo the management must agree. A light, open frame is simpler, but check before you build.
Which plants survive a hot Malaysian roof?
Succulents, ornamental grasses, bougainvillea, palms in large pots and hardy herbs such as lemongrass and pandan. Water them on a timer and give them some shade.
Are the designs on this page real ClickBina projects?
No. They are illustrative concept designs that show rooftop garden options. Your roof is assessed and quoted to its own structure, waterproofing, drainage and building rules.
