Planning a panelled wall behind the bed? Compare fluted, upholstered, wainscot, acoustic slat and wallpaper options, and plan the aircon wall, lights and sockets first.

A headboard wall panels the whole wall behind the bed and builds in the lights and sockets. Fluted panels (MDF, WPC, PS or timber slat) suit modern bedrooms; upholstered fabric panels add softness; wainscoting suits classic rooms; acoustic slat panels add warmth and some echo control; wallpaper is the quickest. MDF must stay dry, and a wall with aircon trunking must be checked for leaks before it is panelled. Plan switch and socket positions before the panels are ordered. ClickBina supplies and installs all of these: tell us your room, wall size and budget and we will recommend one and quote.
A headboard is part of the bed. A headboard wall is the whole wall behind it: panelled from floor to ceiling or to a set height, with the bedside lights, switches and sockets built in. It is the single change that makes a Malaysian bedroom look finished, and the materials range from fluted panels to upholstered fabric.
If you only need a bed with an upholstered or fluted headboard, see our custom bed frame and headboard guide. This page is about panelling the wall itself. For every panel material in one place, see our wall panel types guide.
Ten headboard walls in the materials compared below: fluted and slat panels, upholstered fabric, acoustic slats, wainscoting, wallpaper and flat panels with the lights and switches built in. | Option | Look | Feel and sound | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fluted panel (MDF, WPC, PS or timber slat) | Vertical ribs, hotel-style | Hard surface | Joints at sockets; lighting to show the ribs |
| Upholstered fabric panels | Soft, tailored, luxurious | Softens sound in the room | Fabric choice for dust and cleaning |
| Wainscoting | Classic frames, painted | Hard surface | Proportions: rail height against the bed |
| Acoustic slat panel | Wood slats on dark felt | Absorbs some sound through the felt | Mounting decides the acoustic effect |
| Wallpaper | Colour and pattern | Flat | Seams in humid rooms; knocks from the bed |
Most of these can be mixed: an upholstered centre with fluted side panels, or wallpaper above a wainscot rail.
Fluting is the most-requested headboard wall today. It can be painted or laminated MDF, a factory WPC or PS profile, or solid timber slats. In an air-conditioned bedroom any of these can work; the choice is the look, the budget and how the wall will be repaired. Our fluted wall panel guide compares them in detail.
MDF is the one to keep dry. Thickness swelling after 24 hours in water is the number that separates board grades. On one Malaysian manufacturer's data sheet, standard MDF is allowed to swell by roughly 10-35% depending on thickness, while its HMR grade is listed at roughly 3-12%. Even the moisture-resistant grade swells — which is why MDF panels stay out of splash zones.
Upholstered headboard walls are made from panels with padding and fabric, fixed to the wall in a grid or as tall vertical strips. There are two different products under the name:
Pick a fabric you can vacuum and that hides dust, and ask whether panels can be taken down for cleaning. Our upholstered and fabric panel guide covers the choices.
Slat-style acoustic panels are MDF slats faced with real wood veneer (or laminate) mounted on an acoustic felt backing, according to one of the best-known makers.
They look warm and modern, and the felt behind the slats can soften echo in a bare room. How much they actually absorb depends on the product and how it is mounted, so ask for the tested figure and the mounting it was tested with. See our acoustic slat panel guide.
Wainscoting suits classic and modern-classic bedrooms: a panelled lower wall with a rail at headboard height, painted in one colour. Wallpaper is the quickest and least disruptive, and it pairs well with wainscoting below. In humid rooms, choose a paper and paste that suit the conditions.
In many Malaysian bedrooms the headboard wall is also the wall with the aircon trunking or the outdoor unit behind it. That matters:
Plan the electrical points before the panels are ordered, because moving them later means cutting the panels:
| Point | Typical placement | Plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Bedside switches | Both sides of the bed, at hand height when lying down | Two-way switching for the main light |
| Sockets and USB | Just above bedside table height | Cut-outs aligned with panel joints or ribs |
| Reading lights | Wall-mounted or pendant, each side | Cable route behind the panel |
| Strip light | Top or bottom edge of the panel | Driver location you can reach later |
A batten-and-clip system leaves a void behind the panels for cables and LED drivers. Electrical work itself should be done by a registered electrical wireman.
This page publishes no prices, but these are the things that move a quote:
A headboard wall looks best when it is designed with the bed and the wardrobe, not after them. Match the bed width to the panel pattern, carry the same finish into bedside tables, and keep the wardrobe doors in a calmer finish so the headboard wall stays the feature. Our bedroom design guide has layout ideas.
ClickBina supplies and installs wall panels and feature walls as part of our renovation work in KL and Selangor — WPC, PS, PVC, SPC, painted, laminated or veneered MDF, solid timber slat, UV marble sheet, acoustic slat and fabric panels. We recommend the panel by your budget and how the room is used, and the quotation names the core material, thickness, fixing method and trims. For a headboard wall we plan the panel layout around your bed width and the switch and socket positions before anything is cut.
Tell us your room, wall size and budget on WhatsApp and we’ll recommend the right panel and quote. A site visit is RM150, waived if you proceed. Our price is flat, with no hidden charges; we are SSM-registered and reply within the hour. If the wall is part of a bigger job, we handle whole-house refurbishment and coordinate the trades.
Every material fact on this page was checked against the page or PDF below on 30 Sep 2026. Most are one manufacturer describing its own product, so we quote them as that, not as a property of every panel sold under the same name. Where a standard is named (EN 13501-1, ASTM E84, BS 476) it is named by the manufacturer; it is not a Malaysian approval.
Prices: this page publishes no prices. Panel prices depend on the core material, thickness, wall size, trims and the state of the wall, so we quote after you tell us the room, wall size and budget. The site-visit fee (RM150, waived if you proceed) is ClickBina’s own.
