Autogate in a Power Cut
Manual Release, Battery Backup & Fixes (2026)

How to get the gate open in a blackout, why the backup battery failed, and how to be ready for the next outage.

Swing autogate arm motor on a pillar with the manual release key inserted

In a power cut an autogate without a working backup battery simply stops. To open it, find the manual release on the motor (usually a small key or lever), unlock it, and push the gate by hand; lock it again once the power is back. A backup battery on the control board keeps the gate running for a limited number of cycles during an outage. ClickBina's autogate repair guide puts a control-board backup battery at RM80 – RM200 (indicative 2026, Klang Valley), and it is a consumable part that has to be replaced every few years.

What happens to an autogate when the power goes off

An autogate is a motor, a control board and a set of safety devices, all running on the house supply. When TNB power goes off, or the circuit for the gate trips at the distribution board, the board loses power and the motor holds the gate wherever it stopped. Most gate motors are geared so the leaf cannot be pushed open while the motor is engaged. That is a security feature, and it is also why a blackout can leave a car locked in or out of the porch.

Three things decide what you can do next: whether the system has a backup battery and whether that battery is still healthy, what kind of motor drives the gate, and whether you are standing inside or outside the gate. If the whole street is dark, it is a supply outage. If only your house is dark, check the main switch first; our no-power troubleshooting guide explains how to tell a TNB outage from a tripped board.

First steps in a blackout

  1. Try the remote once or twice. If the gate moves, even slowly, the backup battery is doing its job. Use it only for the trips you need, because the battery has a limited number of cycles.
  2. If nothing happens, stop pressing. Repeated presses on a weak battery can leave the gate half open and the battery flat.
  3. Switch off the gate isolator or its breaker if you can reach it, so the gate cannot start moving by itself when the power returns while someone is standing in the opening.
  4. Use the manual release described below, open the gate by hand, and leave it in a safe position.
  5. When the power is back, close the gate by hand, re-engage the motor, switch the isolator on and run one full cycle with the remote while watching it.

Never force a locked gate with a car bumper or a crowbar. Gearboxes and arm brackets are cheap compared with a bent leaf or a cracked pillar, and a gate that is forced open can drop off its track or hinges.

Where the manual release is, by motor type

Every autogate motor has a way to disconnect the gearbox so the leaf can be moved by hand. The exact mechanism depends on the brand, but it falls into a few families. The installer should show you the release on handover; if nobody did, ask for it at the next service.

Gate and motorWhere the release usually isWhat to watch for
Swing gate, arm motor on the pillarA key slot or a lever on the motor body, on the inside face of the gateRelease each leaf; a double-leaf gate has two motors
Swing gate, underground motorA keyed cover or socket at the hinge end of the leaf, at ground levelNeeds the special key; the cover can be full of sand or water
Folding (trackless) gateA key or lever on the arm motor, usually on the pillar sideFold the leaves gently; do not let them swing free in wind
Sliding gate, motor beside the trackA keyed lever or knob on the motor housingThe gate can roll fast on a slope; keep a hand on it

Keep the release key on the house key ring, not hanging on the gate, and keep a spare indoors. If you often come home to a dead gate from the outside, ask about an external release, a keyed box on the outer face of the pillar that pulls a cable to the motor. Not every motor accepts one, so ask before buying.

What a backup battery does, and what it cannot do

A backup battery is a small sealed battery on or beside the control board. The board keeps it charged while the mains is on and switches the gate over to it when the mains goes off. It is meant to get you through a short outage with a handful of openings and closings, not to run the gate normally through a long blackout.

  • It wears out. ClickBina's repair guide calls the backup battery a consumable that does not last the life of the system. A gate that dies with every power cut usually has no battery or one that has quietly expired.
  • It shows weakness early. Slow, weak or partial travel during an outage, or a gate that opens halfway and stops, is often a tired battery rather than a failing motor.
  • Not every motor can use one. Low-voltage DC motors are designed to run from a battery. Many mains-voltage AC motors cannot run from a board battery at all, and keeping them going needs a separate backup supply sized for the motor.
  • It needs the board to charge it. A battery fitted to a board that has stopped charging will be flat at the next outage, however new it is.

If the gate also has a GSM module, a keypad or an intercom, those draw power too and can shorten the battery's run in a blackout. Ask the technician to check what the battery is feeding.

AC or DC motor: why it matters in a blackout

Most of the battery question comes down to the type of motor. Look at the label on the motor or the control board, or ask the installer to confirm it in writing.

Motor typeIn a power cutUpgrade path
Low-voltage DC motor with a backup batteryKeeps working for a limited number of cyclesReplace the battery before it expires; check the board charges it
Low-voltage DC motor, no battery fittedStops; manual release neededMost such boards accept a battery; ask for one to be fitted
Mains-voltage AC motorStops; manual release neededA separate backup supply sized for the motor, or rely on the release
Any motor on a circuit that keeps trippingStops even when the rest of the house has powerFind the fault; do not keep resetting the breaker

Upgrading an old AC system to a DC motor just to gain battery backup is a bigger job: the motor, the board and often the brackets change. Our autogate motor replacement guide explains what has to match your existing gate before a new motor goes on.

When the power comes back

Most problems after an outage come from the moment the power returns, not from the blackout itself.

  • Re-engage the motor first. Close the gate by hand, lock the release, then switch the supply back on. A motor left released will hum or race without moving the leaf.
  • Expect a slow first cycle on some boards. Some controllers run one slower opening and closing to find their end positions again. Let it finish.
  • Watch the first full cycle. If the gate stops short, over-runs or reverses, the limits or the safety beams may need resetting.
  • Check the remotes. A surge when the supply returns can wipe a receiver's memory, leaving every remote unpaired. Our remote troubleshooting guide covers re-pairing.
  • If the breaker trips again, leave it off and call for an inspection. Repeated tripping is a fault being reported, not a nuisance.

Surges, storms and the control board

Power cuts in a thunderstorm often come with surges, and the control board is the most exposed part of the system. A board that was fine before the storm and dead after it has usually taken a surge. Surge protection on the gate circuit, a proper earth and a dry, sealed control box all help. Water inside the box after heavy rain is a common cause of a board that fails on the next outage.

Work on the supply side, the isolator or the distribution board is electrical work for a competent person registered with Suruhanjaya Tenaga, not a general handyman. The gate technician handles the motor, board, battery and safety devices; a wireman handles the supply.

A new motor is the big variable and depends on brand and gate type; see the autogate repair guide for the published motor ranges and the repair or replace test.

Get ready before the next outage

  1. Ask the technician to test the backup battery under load at the annual service, not just its voltage.
  2. Learn where the manual release is on every motor and try it once in daylight.
  3. Keep the release key on the house key ring, with a spare indoors.
  4. Keep the control box sealed and its cable entries closed against water and ants.
  5. Clear sand and water from underground motor covers so the release can be reached.
  6. Write down the motor brand, model and board type, so a replacement battery or board can be matched quickly.

Common Questions

How do I open my autogate when there is no electricity?
Use the manual release on the motor, usually a small key or a lever, to disconnect the gearbox, then push the gate open by hand. Switch off the gate's isolator first if you can, and lock the release again once the power is back.
Why does my autogate not work during a blackout even though it has a battery?
The backup battery has probably expired, or the board is no longer charging it. It is a consumable part. A weak battery often shows up first as slow or partial travel.
How much is an autogate backup battery?
ClickBina's autogate repair guide puts a control-board backup battery at RM80–RM200 (indicative 2026, Klang Valley).
Can every autogate have battery backup?
No. Low-voltage DC motors are designed to run from a battery. Many mains-voltage AC motors cannot run from a board battery and need a separate backup supply sized for the motor, or you rely on the manual release.
Where is the manual release key on an underground autogate?
Usually in a keyed cover or socket at the hinge end of the leaf, at ground level. Keep it clear of sand and water so you can reach it in an emergency.
My gate stopped working after the power came back. What now?
Check the motor is re-engaged, let the board run one full cycle, and re-pair the remotes if none of them work. If the breaker trips again, leave it off and have the circuit inspected.
Can I open the autogate from outside during a power cut?
Only if an external release is fitted, a keyed box on the outer face of the pillar. Otherwise someone inside has to release the motor. Ask whether your motor accepts an external release kit.
