Two different problems: no power, and no internet

“CCTV without Wi-Fi” is asked as one question and is really two, and almost every disappointing purchase comes from answering only one of them. No internet is a connectivity problem, solved by putting a mobile data SIM in the camera so it reaches you over the cellular network instead of a router. No mains is a power problem, solved by a battery and a solar panel. A construction site with a generator has power but no broadband. A rural gate has neither. A shoplot storeroom often has both and simply has no Wi-Fi reaching the corner where the camera goes — and that one is solved with a cable, not with a SIM.

Answer both questions about your own site before you look at a single product, because they buy different things. A 4G camera plugged into a socket is a straightforward device. The first row is the one worth arguing about, because it is the commonest situation and the commonest mistake. If the property has power and a broadband line and the only problem is that Wi-Fi does not reach the back gate, running a cable is almost always the better answer: continuous recording, no monthly data cost, no battery to die, and a picture that does not have to be squeezed down to fit a mobile uplink. How a 4G camera works, and what it gives up

A 4G camera contains a cellular modem and a SIM. Instead of joining your router it joins a mobile network directly, and you reach it through the manufacturer’s app and cloud service. That independence is the whole appeal — no router, no cable back to a recorder, nothing on site to break except the camera itself.

What it gives up is worth stating plainly, because the sales pages rarely do. Mobile data is metered and comparatively slow on the upload side, so these cameras are designed around events rather than continuous recording: motion triggers a short clip, the clip is uploaded, and the rest of the day is not. Continuous 24-hour recording over a mobile link is possible but is a very different data proposition, and it is where the tidy monthly SIM figures stop applying. The camera also depends on a manufacturer’s cloud service to reach you, which means the account, the app and the company behind them are part of the product — a consideration that does not arise with a recorder in your own cupboard.

Read those two published rows carefully. The monthly data figure comes from one Malaysian supplier’s own guidance, and it is written for event-triggered clips — sitting and watching a live stream all day is a different quantity of data and a different bill. The rental figure is one Klang Valley operator’s advertised starting price covering camera, SIM, memory card, delivery and installation on a single monthly fee; no upper bound is published, so read it as a floor rather than a range. Both are single-operator figures rather than a surveyed market, which is precisely why the two blank rows above are blank instead of being filled with something that sounds right.

The costs that are genuinely predictable are the ones around the edges: a pole or bracket, a lockable enclosure, mains work if there is any, and an annual service visit. Sizing solar and battery honestly

Nobody can size your system from a web page, but the arithmetic is short enough that you can check whether a supplier has done it. There are four numbers, and all four should appear in a quote for an off-grid camera.

  1. Daily energy the camera needs. Take the power draw in watts from the camera’s datasheet — and take the figure for the way you will actually run it, because infrared at night and active recording draw far more than idle standby. Multiply by the hours it spends in each state and add them up. That gives watt-hours per day.
  2. Usable battery capacity. A battery is quoted in amp-hours at a nominal voltage; multiply the two for watt-hours. Then ask the supplier what proportion of that is usable, because you cannot flatten a battery to zero without shortening its life, and the answer differs by chemistry.
  3. Autonomy. Usable watt-hours divided by watt-hours per day gives the number of days the camera survives with no useful sun at all. This is the number that decides whether the camera is still working in the middle of a wet week, and it is the number that is missing from most quotes.
  4. Panel size. The panel has to replace a full day’s consumption within the hours of useful sun the site actually gets, plus a margin for losses in the charge controller and the cabling. Ask the supplier what daily sun figure they sized against and what margin they allowed.

The discipline this imposes is useful even if you never do the sum yourself: a supplier who can answer all four questions has sized a system, and a supplier who answers “it will be fine” has picked a kit off a shelf. In an equatorial climate the panel is rarely the binding constraint — the battery is, because the failure mode here is not a dim winter, it is a run of heavily overcast monsoon days. Four site facts decide whether an off-grid camera lives or dies, and all four are visible on a survey.

  • Shade, and shade later. A palm frond that clears the panel today will not in eighteen months. Trace the shadow across a full day, then look at what is growing.
  • Tilt and dirt. A panel laid nearly flat collects dust, leaf litter and bird mess, and equatorial rain does not reliably wash a flat panel clean. Some tilt is a maintenance decision as much as an energy one.
  • Heat. Panels and batteries both lose performance when hot, and a sealed black enclosure in full Malaysian sun gets very hot indeed. Shade the electronics even while you expose the panel.
  • Reach. Everything on that pole will need cleaning, and the battery will eventually need replacing. A position that needs a scaffold tower turns a ten-minute job into a scheduled works order.

Where the footage goes

A self-contained camera records to a memory card inside it, and often to a cloud plan as well. Both have consequences worth understanding before you rely on them.

The card. How long it holds is the same arithmetic as a recorder’s hard disk — resolution multiplied by bitrate multiplied by hours — and that sum is worked through on how many days of CCTV your hard disk holds. The difference is scale: a memory card is measured in gigabytes where a surveillance drive is measured in terabytes, so at the same settings a card gives you proportionally far less footage. Event-only recording stretches it a long way, at the cost of missing whatever did not trigger. Cards also wear out under constant rewriting, and a card that has quietly failed looks exactly like a camera that is working.

The cloud. Convenient, off-site, and safe from someone stealing the camera — but it is a subscription and a company, and both can change. Ask what the plan costs after the free period, how long clips are kept, and what happens to your footage if you stop paying.

The gap. If a camera only records what it decides is motion, the footage of the thing you care about may not exist. That is the honest limitation of the whole category and it deserves to be said out loud before purchase, not after an incident.

Test the 4G coverage before you buy anything

This is the cheapest and most-skipped step on the list, and it is not the same as “there is coverage in that area”. Do it properly:

  1. Go to the exact position and height where the camera will be mounted — signal at ground level beside a wall and signal three metres up on a pole are different measurements.
  2. Use a phone on the network whose SIM you intend to use. Coverage is not interchangeable between operators, and the difference at a rural site is often total.
  3. Test the upload speed, not the download. The camera’s whole job is sending video out, which is the direction mobile networks are weakest.
  4. Test at different times of day. A tower that is comfortable at 10am can be congested at 7pm.
  5. Test in the rain if you possibly can, since that is when you most need it to work.

If the result is marginal, the fix is an external antenna mounted higher, not a more expensive camera — and that is a survey conversation, because it changes the mounting design.

Rent or buy?

Rental exists in the Klang Valley market for exactly the situations where buying is awkward, and it answers a real question. Rent when the requirement has an end date — a construction site, a renovation, a short-term worry, a rented property you may leave. Rent when you want somebody else to own the SIM, the card and the failure. Buy when the camera has a permanent home, when several cameras are involved, or when you want footage kept on your own equipment rather than on somebody’s platform.

The comparison is a simple one to do once you know the rental figure, which is published, and the purchase figure, which is not — so ask for both as an itemised quote and work out the crossover month yourself. A rental offer that includes installation and a SIM is not comparable with a bare hardware price, and the two get compared as if they were more often than not.

It is a self-contained box on a pole

A wired camera is a poor thing to steal: the recording is somewhere else and the cable holds it down. A self-contained solar camera is the opposite — the camera, the card, the battery and the panel are all on the pole, and taking the camera takes the evidence with it unless a cloud plan already has the clips. That changes the mounting design. Height, an anti-tamper bracket, security fixings, and a position covered by a second camera all become part of the specification rather than nice-to-haves.

It also changes where you put it. A camera that a person can reach from a wall, a gate or the roof of a parked lorry is a camera that will be reached. What the site survey is actually looking for

Because the hardware and the installation on this page are quoted after a survey rather than from a list, it is fair to say exactly what the surveyor is doing. Six things:

  • Signal. Measured upload speed at the mounting height, on the intended network, not a coverage map.
  • Sun. The shadow path across a full day, what is growing nearby, and where a panel can face without being in the way.
  • Power that already exists. Any usable supply within reach changes the answer completely and is worth ten minutes of looking.
  • What has to be seen, and how well. A number plate, a face and “somebody was here” are three different specifications and three different camera positions.
  • Mounting and access. What the pole or bracket attaches to, whether it will hold in a squall, and how a person reaches it afterwards.
  • Who watches it, and how. App on one phone, several phones, or footage that only gets looked at after an incident — this decides the data plan more than the camera does.

What to ask before you buy

  1. What is the battery autonomy in days with no useful sun, and how was it calculated?
  2. What daily sun figure and what loss margin did you size the panel against?
  3. Is the camera recording continuously or only on motion, and what is the data consequence of each?
  4. Whose SIM is it, whose account is it, and what happens when the plan expires?
  5. What does the cloud plan cost after any free period, and how long are clips kept?
  6. What size card is fitted, and how many days does that hold at the settings you are shipping it on?
  7. What is the warranty on the battery specifically, as distinct from the camera?
  8. Who comes out when it stops, how quickly, and what does a visit cost?

Keeping it alive

Off-grid cameras fail quietly. Nobody notices for weeks, and then the footage that was needed never existed. Four habits prevent nearly all of it. Check the app on a fixed day each month — a live image and a recent clip, not just a green dot. Watch the SIM. A prepaid plan that lapses takes the camera off the network without any other symptom, so know the renewal date or put it on auto-renewal. Clean the panel before the wet season and after any dusty works nearby. Treat the battery as a consumable: it is the part with the shortest life on the pole, and replacing it on schedule is cheaper than discovering it failed during the incident you bought the camera for.
