Sticky cabinet tops and a hood that drips grease? Here is what a proper kitchen deep clean covers, what you can do yourself, and what it costs.

A kitchen deep clean goes beyond wiping the counters: it degreases the cooker hood and its filters, the hob, wall tiles and the tops of cabinets, cleans inside every cabinet and appliance, lifts grease and mould from grout lines, and descales the sink and tap. In a Malaysian kitchen with daily frying, the hood filters and the grease film on high surfaces are where most of the work is. On our guides an oven deep clean is RM80–RM150 as an add-on, and a greasy hood filter is often cheaper to replace at RM80–RM250.
A regular clean keeps the visible surfaces tidy. A deep clean deals with what builds up where nobody wipes every week: the inside of the hood, the grease on top of wall cabinets, the gap behind the fridge and the dark lines of grout behind the hob. The table shows the usual scope.
| Area | What is done | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Cooker hood | Filters soaked or replaced, canopy and fan housing degreased | A clogged filter cuts extraction and drips grease |
| Hob | Burners, pan supports and surround degreased | Burnt-on residue blocks burner holes on gas hobs |
| Wall tiles and backsplash | Degreased, grout lines scrubbed | Grease holds dust and turns grout dark |
| Cabinet exteriors and tops | Doors, handles and cabinet tops degreased | The top of wall cabinets collects a sticky film |
| Cabinet interiors | Emptied, wiped and dried | Crumbs and spills attract pests |
| Appliances | Oven, microwave and fridge interiors on request | Odours and old spills |
| Sink and tap | Descaled and polished; trap checked | Scale and smells |
| Floor | Degreased, including under movable appliances | A greasy floor is slippery |
High-heat frying and wok cooking push oily vapour into the air. What the hood does not capture settles on the nearest cool surfaces: the hood itself, the wall tiles, the cabinet tops and the ceiling. Over months it combines with dust into a sticky film that normal detergent only smears.
A weak or badly ducted hood makes this much worse. If grease keeps coming back quickly after a clean, the problem may be the extraction, not the cleaning. Our kitchen exhaust ducting guide explains how ducts and fans should be set up, and the exhaust fan guide covers extraction in other rooms.
The hood is the most important and most neglected part of the job. Most homes have either aluminium mesh filters, which can be soaked in hot water with a degreaser, or baffle filters, which are sturdier and easier to clean. Recirculating hoods also have a carbon filter that cannot be washed and has to be replaced.
If the hood is old, noisy or no longer pulls smoke away even with clean filters, replacing it is often better value. Our hood and hob guide covers types and prices.
Cabinet doors near the hob pick up grease first, especially around handles. Wipe with a mild degreaser suited to the finish; harsh solvents and scouring pads can dull or strip laminate, sprayed and acrylic doors. The tops of wall cabinets are the worst area in most kitchens, which is why some owners lay a sheet of liner paper up there and change it every few months.
Inside, empty each cabinet, wipe it down and let it dry fully before reloading. Look for signs of water under the sink and swelling at the edges of the board. Swelling is a board problem, not a cleaning problem; our swollen cabinet guide explains the options.
Grease settles into grout lines and turns them dark. Scrub with a stiff brush and a degreaser, then rinse; harsh acid cleaners can damage cement grout and some tiles. If grout stays stained or crumbles after cleaning, it is worn out rather than dirty. Regrouting with a stain-resistant epoxy grout behind the hob is a longer-term answer, which our grout types guide prices at RM1 – RM3 per sq ft extra over normal grout.
Check the silicone bead along the worktop and around the sink. Black mould in silicone cannot be cleaned out; the bead has to be cut out and replaced.
Oven interiors, microwaves and fridges are usually add-ons to a deep clean because they take time and need the appliance emptied. Pull out movable appliances where it is safe, and clean the floor and wall behind them, where crumbs and grease feed cockroaches. Our cockroach control guide explains why kitchen hygiene is the first step in any pest treatment.
A lightly used kitchen can be deep cleaned by the owner over a day with a good degreaser, a stiff brush, microfibre cloths and patience. A professional clean makes more sense when the grease has built up for years, before a tenant moves in or out, after renovation dust, or when the hood and high cabinets are hard to reach safely.
| Situation | DIY is fine | Consider a professional clean |
|---|---|---|
| Routine monthly clean | Yes | No |
| Years of grease on hood and cabinet tops | Hard work | Yes |
| Tenant move-in or move-out | Possible for a small unit | Yes, for handover standard |
| Grout stained or crumbling | Cleaning will not fix it | Regrouting instead |
| Hood weak even when clean | Cleaning will not fix it | Hood or duct replacement |
Hood filters in a home that fries daily need attention far more often than the rest of the kitchen. A simple routine: wipe the hob and backsplash after heavy cooking, wash hood filters regularly, degrease cabinet doors and tops every few months, and plan a full deep clean once a year or between tenancies. For rental units our move-in and move-out cleaning guide sets out the handover checklist.
