Aircon Noisy?
Rattling Indoor Unit or Vibrating Outdoor Unit (2026)

Match the sound to the cause: a rattle, a grind, a buzz or a hiss each point somewhere different, and most noisy units need a clean, not a big repair.

Outdoor aircon unit on a wall bracket with worn rubber feet and a loose bolt on a terrace wall

A healthy aircon makes a soft hum. A rattle from the indoor unit is usually a loose cover or a blower fan clogged unevenly with dirt; grinding or squealing points to a failing fan-motor bearing; a buzzing or vibrating outdoor unit can be a worn compressor mount, a loose bracket or a struggling capacitor; and a hiss or bubbling can mean refrigerant moving through a low or leaking system. A service cures the commonest noise, a dirty fan. A bearing caught early is a part swap; ignored, it can take the motor and board with it. On ClickBina guides a diagnostic call-out is RM120 – RM400 and a fan motor RM250 – RM600.

Match the sound to the likely cause

Stand near each unit and listen for a minute with it running. Note which unit, what kind of sound, and whether it changes when the fan speed or cooling changes.

Indoor unit rattling or clattering

The commonest noise of all is a blower fan (the long barrel fan inside the indoor unit) that has collected dirt unevenly. Out of balance, it clatters, and the noise grows with fan speed. A regular service or a chemical wash cleans the barrel and usually cures it. Our aircon chemical service guide explains when a full wash is worth it over a regular service.

The other usual causes are simple: a front panel or filter not clipped in fully, a loose louvre, a screw missing from the cover, or the unit sitting slightly loose on its mounting plate. A unit that rattles more when you press the casing is loose, not broken.

Grinding, squealing or scraping

A grinding or squealing sound, often worse at start-up, points at a fan-motor bearing that is wearing out, in either the indoor blower or the outdoor fan. A scraping sound can be a blade touching its shroud after a knock, or debris caught in the outdoor fan. Switch the unit off and book a check. Replacing a motor while only the bearing is failing is a contained repair; running it until the motor seizes can damage the control board as well.

Outdoor unit vibrating or buzzing

Vibration you can feel through the wall usually starts with the mounting. A bracket that has worked loose, missing or perished rubber feet, or a unit that is not sitting level transmits every cycle of the compressor into the wall. Our aircon ledge and outdoor unit placement guide puts it plainly: a unit that vibrates on a loose bracket is noisy for you and the neighbours and wears the pipes at the joints.

  • Check that the bracket bolts and the unit's feet are tight and the unit is level.
  • Look for pipes touching the wall or each other; where they rub, they buzz.
  • A steady electrical buzz from the unit, with the fan slow to start, can be a weak capacitor.
  • A heavy rattle from inside the casing, or a knock when the compressor starts, needs a technician.

Our capacitor fault guide covers the symptoms of a failing capacitor, and the compressor repair guide covers the sounds a struggling compressor makes.

Hissing, bubbling or gurgling

A short hiss when the unit starts or stops can be normal, as refrigerant pressure evens out. A constant hiss or bubbling, together with weaker cooling or ice on the pipes, suggests a low or leaking system. A gurgling sound from the indoor unit is often water in a drain that is partly blocked or has no clean fall. Neither is fixed by topping up gas: the leak or the drain has to be found first.

Clicks and creaks: usually normal

Plastic panels expand and contract as the unit warms and cools, and they tick or creak, especially when the unit starts or when the room changes temperature. Relays inside click when the compressor or fan switches. These sounds are normal unless they become loud, rhythmic or new.

Noisy right after a new installation

Noise or vibration from a newly installed aircon should go back to the installer early, while it is still a cheap fix. The usual causes are a mounting plate not level or not tight, pipes pressed against the back of the unit, an outdoor unit on an uneven ledge or bracket, or transit packing left inside. Raise it in writing with the installer and ask them to recheck the mounting and pipework.

Safe checks you can do yourself

  1. Switch off at the unit and the isolator before touching anything.
  2. Check the front panel and filters are clipped in, and the louvres move freely.
  3. Look at the outdoor unit: anything on top of it, leaves or debris in the fan, loose bracket bolts.
  4. Note whether the noise follows the fan speed (fan or balance) or the compressor starting (outdoor side).
  5. Do not open the casing or touch the fan or electrics: capacitors can hold a charge.

When the noise bothers the neighbours

An outdoor unit that hums against a party wall or blows at a neighbour's window is a common cause of complaints in terraces and condos. Fixing the mounting and vibration usually solves it; moving the unit may be the only fix if it sits in a narrow side passage. In strata buildings, complaints about noise go through the management; our strata nuisance complaints guide explains the process.

Most noisy units need a clean or a tightened mounting, not a big repair. A proper diagnosis before any part is changed keeps it that way.

How ClickBina can help

WhatsApp us your job details for a quote: which unit is noisy, what the sound is like, when it happens and the brand and age if you know them. Common Questions

Why is my aircon indoor unit rattling?
Usually a loose front cover, filter or louvre, or a blower fan that has collected dirt unevenly and is out of balance. Clip the panels in first; if it still rattles, a service or chemical wash usually cures it.
Why is my aircon outdoor unit vibrating?
Most often a loose bracket or feet, perished rubber mounts or a unit that is not level. A buzz with a slow fan start can be a weak capacitor; a knock at start-up points at the compressor.
Is a noisy aircon dangerous?
Grinding, burning smells or loud knocking mean switch it off and book a check. A rattle from a dirty fan or a loose cover is not dangerous but gets worse if ignored.
Will a gas top-up fix a hissing aircon?
No. A constant hiss with weak cooling suggests a leak; the leak must be found and repaired first. Topping up a leaking system only delays the problem.
How much does it cost to fix a noisy aircon?
It depends on the cause. ClickBina guides list a diagnostic call-out at RM120 – RM400, a regular service at RM60 – RM120 and a fan motor at RM250 – RM600 (market estimate 2026).
My new aircon is noisy. What should I do?
Go back to the installer early and in writing. The usual causes are a mounting plate that is not level or tight, pipes pressed against the unit or an outdoor unit on an uneven bracket.
Are clicking sounds from my aircon normal?
Usually. Plastic panels tick as they warm and cool, and relays click when the compressor or fan switches. Loud, rhythmic or new sounds are worth checking.
