There are three ways to control an aircon from a phone, and they are not equivalent. Built-in Wi-Fi (the unit was sold smart) is the only one that reliably reports back what the unit is actually doing. A manufacturer add-on module plugs into a socket inside the indoor unit and gets you close to the same thing, but only if a module exists for your exact model. A universal infrared (IR) hub copies your handset and works with almost anything — but it is one-way and line-of-sight: it can send a command and cannot confirm the unit obeyed. Most Klang Valley retrofits end up on the IR route, and almost every complaint about smart aircon control traces back to that one limitation, or to where the hub was mounted. What “smart aircon control” really means

Stripped of the marketing, a smart aircon setup is one thing: something in the room that can issue the same commands your handset issues, and that you can reach from your phone over the internet. Everything else — schedules, geofencing, voice control, dashboards — is built on top of that single capability. Understanding this makes the whole category easy to judge, because the interesting question is never “which app is nicest”, it is how the command gets to the unit, and whether anything tells you it arrived.

Malaysian homes are overwhelmingly on wall-mounted split units, many of them five to fifteen years old and none of them designed with a phone in mind. That is the retrofit problem this guide is about. The order above is also the order of preference. Take built-in Wi-Fi if you have it, a genuine module if one exists for your model, and an IR hub only when neither is available — which, for most existing Klang Valley installations, is exactly where you land.

Why an IR hub is one-way and stateless — the thing to understand first

An infrared hub is a very good imitation of your handset, and it inherits your handset’s single weakness: infrared only travels one way. The hub transmits a command. It has no channel to hear an answer. So the app is not showing you the unit’s state — it is showing you the last command it sent, and quietly assuming that worked.

Nearly every real-world complaint about smart aircon control comes out of that gap. Somebody uses the physical handset, and now the app and the unit disagree. The app says 24°C and cooling; the unit was switched off by hand an hour ago. Or the hub sends “on” to a unit that is already on, and because most handsets transmit a full state package rather than a toggle, the unit obeys perfectly and nothing looks wrong — until a model that does use a toggle turns itself off instead.

None of this makes IR the wrong choice. It makes it a choice you should make knowingly, and it argues for one discipline in the household: once the hub is in, the handset goes in a drawer. If your household will not do that, a manufacturer module is worth chasing harder than the price difference suggests.

Where the hub goes decides whether the setup works

Placement is the single largest cause of a setup that works on installation day and fails a fortnight later. An IR hub needs a genuinely clear path to the indoor unit’s receiver window, and it needs solid Wi-Fi at the same spot. Those two requirements often point in different directions.

  • Line of sight, not “same room”. Infrared bounces off pale walls and ceilings well enough that a hub can seem to work from a poor position, and then stop working when a curtain is drawn, a wardrobe door is left open, or a sofa is moved a metre. Aim for a position where you can see the indoor unit from the hub.
  • Height and angle. Split units sit high, and their receiver faces down and out. A hub on a low sideboard is firing at the underside of the casing. Mounted high on the opposite wall, or on top of a tall cabinet, it addresses the receiver directly.
  • Distance and blasting power. A hub in a large open living-dining area may be marginal at range even with clear sight. Test from the actual position before anyone drills anything.
  • Wi-Fi at the hub, not at your sofa. Check the signal where the hub will actually live — behind a TV, inside a media cabinet or against a concrete column is a common dead spot in Klang Valley condos.
  • Sunlight. Strong direct sun on either the hub or the unit’s receiver window degrades infrared reception. A position out of the afternoon sun is more reliable.

Powering the hub — and the wiring question

Every hub needs permanent power, and the best position for infrared is rarely next to an existing socket. This is the part of a smart aircon setup that is genuinely a trade job rather than a shopping decision, and it is the only part of this page that carries a price.

Our power points and sockets guide publishes the going rates for that work in the Klang Valley: roughly RM120–RM250 for a socket on surface trunking near the board, RM200–RM400 for a concealed chased-in point, and a dedicated appliance circuit for an air-conditioner from around RM400. Live mains work should be done by a competent person — an electrician registered with Suruhanjaya Tenaga (the Energy Commission) under the Electricity Supply Act 1990 — not by whoever is fitting the hub. If the existing wiring looks tired while the point is being added, that is the moment for an electrical wiring safety inspection rather than a separate call-out later.

Temperature sensing: the hub is not the room

Most IR hubs carry a temperature and humidity sensor, and most people assume it reports the room. It reports the hub. A hub sitting on a warm TV cabinet, inside a media unit, or in the path of the aircon’s own airflow will read several degrees away from where you actually sit — and any automation built on that reading inherits the error.

This matters most for the automation people want most: “turn the aircon on when the room passes 28°C.” Built on a badly placed sensor, that rule fires at the wrong time in both directions, and the household concludes that smart control does not work. If a rule like that is the reason you are doing this, put a separate small sensor at seated or bed height away from the airflow, and drive the automation from that instead of from the hub. Schedules, geofencing and the honest energy question

The genuinely useful automations are the dull ones. A bedroom unit that starts twenty minutes before bedtime and steps its setpoint up overnight. A living room that cannot be left running when the last phone leaves the house. A weekday schedule that never runs the study while nobody is in it. These work because they change when the unit runs, which is the variable a household actually controls.

On the energy question, be sceptical of any specific percentage — including one from a vendor. What a schedule saves depends on your unit, your setpoint, your insulation and how disciplined the household was to begin with, and a home that was already switching off diligently has little left to gain. The defensible claim is narrower and still worth having: an aircon that cannot be left running by accident costs less than one that can. Multi-room and multi-unit homes

One hub per room is the usual answer, because infrared does not go round corners. A three-bedroom home with a living-room unit is therefore typically four hubs, four power points and four sets of learned codes — which is the point at which the electrical work stops being trivial and is worth planning as one visit rather than four call-outs.

Two things save trouble at that scale. First, naming: name by room, not by brand or by hub, and do it during setup, because renaming later breaks every automation that referenced the old name. Second, grouping: a “whole house off” scene is the automation households actually use every day, and it is trivial to build once the naming is sane. Because so much of this job is configuration rather than materials, a vague quote is easy to write and hard to argue with afterwards. Insist that the following appear as separate lines:

The handover line matters more than it looks. A setup registered to the installer’s account is a setup you cannot change, transfer or troubleshoot once they stop answering the phone.

Mistakes that make a smart aircon setup useless

  • Buying the hub before checking for a manufacturer module. Ten minutes with the model number on the indoor unit’s faceplate can move you to a two-way route that never disagrees with reality.
  • Mounting for tidiness instead of for line of sight. The neatest position is behind the TV, and it is usually the worst one.
  • Keeping the handset in daily use. On an IR setup this guarantees the app and the unit drift apart. Put it somewhere retrievable but not habitual.
  • Automating from the hub’s own sensor. It reads the cabinet it sits on, not the room you sit in.
  • Letting the installer own the account. Ask for it in your email address, set during the visit, and log in yourself before they leave.

  • Running a hub off an extension lead behind furniture. It is the connection nobody checks and the first thing knocked out when the room is cleaned.

Common Questions

Can I make an old aircon smart in Malaysia?
Yes, in almost every case — a universal infrared hub copies your existing handset and works with most split units regardless of age. Check first whether your manufacturer sells an add-on Wi-Fi module for your exact model, because a module reports the unit's real state back to the app and an IR hub cannot.
Why does my app say the aircon is on when it is off?
Because an infrared hub only transmits — it has no way to hear back from the unit. The app shows the last command it sent, not the unit's actual state, so any use of the physical handset puts the two out of step. Either keep the handset out of daily use, or move to a manufacturer module that reports state both ways.
Where should the IR hub be mounted?
