People ask for “aircon moving” meaning three quite different jobs, and the price and risk differ sharply between them:
In all three, the same core sequence applies: recover the refrigerant, disconnect, remove, transport, remount, run new pipework, re-flare, pressure-test, evacuate, release the charge, and commission. A relocation that skips the vacuum or reuses old flares is not cheaper — it is a repair scheduled for later.
Not every unit is worth relocating. Moving costs real money and carries real risk, so the honest comparison is against leaving it in place or buying new for the new address:

A split air conditioner is a sealed system holding a measured charge of refrigerant. Before the pipes are opened, that charge has to be moved somewhere — normally pumped down into the outdoor unit and shut in behind its service valves. Done properly it takes a few minutes and the unit arrives at the new position with its charge intact.
Done badly, three things happen at once, and the owner sees none of them:
So the single most useful question to ask a relocation quote is: will you pump down and recover the charge, pressure-test the new pipework, and pull a vacuum before releasing it? If the answer is vague, the rest of the quote does not matter. Refrigerant handling belongs to trained refrigeration technicians with the correct recovery and vacuum equipment — require that, and never attempt any part of it yourself.
Every stage below has a specific way of going wrong. Knowing them is how you tell a careful crew from a fast one:

Stages 7 to 9 are where the money you saved on a cheap quote comes back as a fault. Insist on the water test at stage 9 in particular: it takes two minutes and it is the only proof the drain was reconnected with the correct fall.
A relocation is a rare chance to fix a bad original installation, so it is worth thinking about the new position rather than just replicating the old one:
Two wall penetrations get created by a relocation and both are frequently ignored. The old hole is now an open channel through your external wall. Left with a scrap of trunking over it, it admits driven rain, insects and, in an upper-floor unit, water that appears on an internal wall metres away from where it entered. It needs filling and making good from the outside face, not covering from the inside.
The new hole has to be drilled with a slight fall to the outside and sleeved and sealed properly. The trunking is a cosmetic cover, not a weather seal — a point our wall-penetration leak guide covers in full, because a badly sealed sleeve is one of the most misdiagnosed causes of a damp internal wall. Make both holes an explicit line in the quote; otherwise they become your problem after the crew has left.
If the new run is being buried in the wall rather than surface-trunked, that is hacking and patching work and it needs to be priced and made good properly — including the plaster, skim and paint touch-up. Concealed pipework looks better and is harder to inspect later; decide deliberately, not by default.
A relocated unit almost always needs its power supply altered, and that is where the job crosses from refrigeration into electrical work. The rule to hold on to is simple: the final connection, any new circuit, and any change at the distribution board are for a licensed electrician — not for the aircon crew improvising, and certainly not for the homeowner.
What to require, rather than how it is done:
There is no honest single number for a relocation, because the two positions decide the job. What can be priced up front are the components — and a quote that itemises these is a quote you can compare:

Two notes on that table. First, a refrigerant top-up should be the exception after a relocation, not a line you expect — if the charge was recovered properly it comes back with the unit. Being told at the end of a move that it “needs gas” is a question, not a fact: read the gas top-up trap. Second, a relocation is the cheapest moment in the unit’s life to have it cleaned, because it is already off the wall.

This catches tenants out regularly. If the unit was in the property when you moved in, it is the landlord’s and removing it is not yours to authorise — even if you paid to service or repair it during the tenancy. If you bought and installed the unit, whether you may take it out depends on what your tenancy agreement says about fixtures and about making good.
