Taking a working air conditioner off one wall and putting it back on another is a different job from installing a new one — and it is where healthy units most often get quietly damaged.

Aircon relocation means dismantling a working split unit, recovering its refrigerant, moving both the indoor and outdoor halves, and reinstalling them at a new position with new flare joints and a proper vacuum. The step that decides whether the unit survives is the pump-down: the refrigerant must be pumped into the outdoor unit and the pipes closed before anything is disconnected. Skip it and the charge is lost to atmosphere and moisture gets into the system — so the “cheap” move ends in a re-gas and, months later, a compressor conversation. Budget the relocation as components: new copper runs at RM30–RM60 per foot, trunking at RM20–RM40 per metre, and hacking & patching for concealed pipes at RM150–RM400 (market estimate 2026, Klang Valley). The dismantle, recovery and re-mount itself is quoted after someone has seen both positions — access, floor level and pipe route change it too much to price blind.

What aircon relocation actually involves

People ask for “aircon moving” meaning three quite different jobs, and the price and risk differ sharply between them:

  • Shifting the indoor unit along the same wall — often only a metre or two, to clear a new wardrobe or a bed position. The outdoor unit stays. Usually the simplest case, though the pipe still has to be re-run and re-flared.
  • Moving to another room — a new indoor position, a new pipe route, possibly a new hole through the wall, and a longer refrigerant run. The outdoor unit may or may not move.
  • Moving to another property — both halves come down, travel, and go up somewhere completely different. This is the case with the most ways to go wrong, because the unit spends time disconnected and in transit.

In all three, the same core sequence applies: recover the refrigerant, disconnect, remove, transport, remount, run new pipework, re-flare, pressure-test, evacuate, release the charge, and commission. A relocation that skips the vacuum or reuses old flares is not cheaper — it is a repair scheduled for later.

Is moving it worth it, or should it stay?

Not every unit is worth relocating. Moving costs real money and carries real risk, so the honest comparison is against leaving it in place or buying new for the new address:

One test settles most cases: if the unit would not be worth a major repair today, it is not worth the cost and risk of a relocation either.

Pump-down and recovery: the step that decides whether it survives

A split air conditioner is a sealed system holding a measured charge of refrigerant. Before the pipes are opened, that charge has to be moved somewhere — normally pumped down into the outdoor unit and shut in behind its service valves. Done properly it takes a few minutes and the unit arrives at the new position with its charge intact.

Done badly, three things happen at once, and the owner sees none of them:

  • The charge is vented. You now pay to replace refrigerant that did not need replacing, and venting it is not something a responsible contractor does.
  • Moist air enters the system. Malaysian humidity means open pipework takes on moisture quickly. Moisture in a refrigerant circuit degrades the oil and attacks the compressor from the inside — a slow failure that shows up long after the mover has gone.
  • The evidence disappears. Without pressure-test and vacuum readings there is no record of whether the system was ever tight.

So the single most useful question to ask a relocation quote is: will you pump down and recover the charge, pressure-test the new pipework, and pull a vacuum before releasing it? If the answer is vague, the rest of the quote does not matter. Refrigerant handling belongs to trained refrigeration technicians with the correct recovery and vacuum equipment — require that, and never attempt any part of it yourself.

The relocation sequence, in order

Every stage below has a specific way of going wrong. Knowing them is how you tell a careful crew from a fast one:

Stages 7 to 9 are where the money you saved on a cheap quote comes back as a fault. Insist on the water test at stage 9 in particular: it takes two minutes and it is the only proof the drain was reconnected with the correct fall.

Choosing the new position

A relocation is a rare chance to fix a bad original installation, so it is worth thinking about the new position rather than just replicating the old one:

  • Indoor: the drain must fall the whole way. Condensate moves by gravity. If the new position forces the drain to climb, you need a longer route or a different wall — not optimism. Most “it drips after the move” complaints trace back to this.
  • Indoor: do not blow straight at the bed or the desk. Airflow across the room is the goal, not a jet at head height.
  • Outdoor: it has to reject heat. A unit boxed into an enclosed cabinet or pressed against a wall recirculates its own hot air and cools badly on the hottest days — exactly when you notice. Leave clearance in front of the coil and above the fan.
  • Outdoor: think about who hears it and who it drips on. In a condo, condensate and noise reaching a neighbour is a by-law problem as well as a plumbing one — see the dripping-neighbour guide.
  • Keep the pipe run short. Longer runs mean more copper, more joints and more places to leak. If a shorter route exists, take it.

The hole you leave behind — and the one you make

Two wall penetrations get created by a relocation and both are frequently ignored. The old hole is now an open channel through your external wall. Left with a scrap of trunking over it, it admits driven rain, insects and, in an upper-floor unit, water that appears on an internal wall metres away from where it entered. It needs filling and making good from the outside face, not covering from the inside.

The new hole has to be drilled with a slight fall to the outside and sleeved and sealed properly. The trunking is a cosmetic cover, not a weather seal — a point our wall-penetration leak guide covers in full, because a badly sealed sleeve is one of the most misdiagnosed causes of a damp internal wall. Make both holes an explicit line in the quote; otherwise they become your problem after the crew has left.

If the new run is being buried in the wall rather than surface-trunked, that is hacking and patching work and it needs to be priced and made good properly — including the plaster, skim and paint touch-up. Concealed pipework looks better and is harder to inspect later; decide deliberately, not by default.

The electrical side and who may connect it

A relocated unit almost always needs its power supply altered, and that is where the job crosses from refrigeration into electrical work. The rule to hold on to is simple: the final connection, any new circuit, and any change at the distribution board are for a licensed electrician — not for the aircon crew improvising, and certainly not for the homeowner.

What to require, rather than how it is done:

  • A dedicated circuit from the DB with a correctly rated protective device and cable sized for the load, particularly for larger units — the installation guide explains why spurring a big unit off the nearest socket is what causes a breaker to trip on every start.
  • No extension leads, no daisy-chained sockets, and no unprotected joints hidden inside trunking.

Two notes on that table. First, a refrigerant top-up should be the exception after a relocation, not a line you expect — if the charge was recovered properly it comes back with the unit. Being told at the end of a move that it “needs gas” is a question, not a fact: read the gas top-up trap. Second, a relocation is the cheapest moment in the unit’s life to have it cleaned, because it is already off the wall.

Moving out of a rental: whose aircon is it?

This catches tenants out regularly. If the unit was in the property when you moved in, it is the landlord’s and removing it is not yours to authorise — even if you paid to service or repair it during the tenancy. If you bought and installed the unit, whether you may take it out depends on what your tenancy agreement says about fixtures and about making good.

  • Get written agreement before anything comes off the wall. A message trail is enough; a verbal “should be fine” is not.
  • Agree who makes good. Removing a unit leaves bracket holes, a wall penetration and often a paint mismatch. Whoever removes it normally makes it good.
  • Photograph the wall before and after. This is deposit territory — see who is responsible for what and who pays for aircon in a rental.
  • Landlords: if a tenant is leaving and the unit stays, this is the natural moment for a service and a condition record — and for a move-out clean to be done at the same time.

Before the crew arrives: a ten-minute checklist

  • Run the unit and confirm it cools, ideally with someone else present. This is your baseline if anything is wrong at the other end.
  • Photograph both halves in place, including the pipe run, the drain and the outdoor mounting.
  • Note the model and serial numbers from both units.
  • Clear access at both positions — furniture moved, ledge reachable, and management or security informed if you are in a condo.
  • Confirm the quote covers pump-down and recovery, new flares, pressure test and vacuum, the drain water test, and making good both wall holes.
  • Agree what happens if the unit does not cool at the new position — before, not after.

There is no single honest number, because the two positions decide the job. What happens to the old hole in the wall?

I’m a tenant moving out — can I take the aircon with me?
Only if you bought and installed it and your tenancy agreement allows you to remove it, and even then you will normally be expected to make good the wall.
