What replacing a roof valley really involves — the tiles that come off, the boards underneath, the tray profile, and the six installation faults that make a new valley leak.

A valley is the internal angle where two roof planes meet and drain into each other — the line you see running diagonally down a roof where a rear extension or an L-shaped plan joins the main roof. It is not simply a joint. It is a gutter sitting in the middle of the roof, and it carries the combined runoff of both faces feeding into it, concentrated into one narrow channel. That makes it the hardest-working component on a tiled roof and the one with the least tolerance for neglect.
Underneath the visible metal there is a small assembly: a valley board or a pair of boards fixed across the rafters to support the tray, the roof underlay dressed into the channel so anything getting past the tiles still drains outwards, battens stopped short of the channel so they do not dam it, and the metal tray itself, lapped so that every joint sheds downhill. When a valley leaks, any part of that assembly can be the cause — which is why replacing only the visible metal sometimes does not fix it. Three different jobs get quoted under the same words, and they cost and last very differently.
If a quote says “repair valley gutter” and the price looks close to a clearing job, you are almost certainly being quoted clearing or sealing. Ask which of the three it is, in writing, before anything is agreed. That ambiguity is one of the patterns in waterproofing scams.
A valley leaks two ways, and the fix for one is not the fix for the other.

That is the case where clearing appears to fix it for one storm and then it comes back. A valley replacement is deliberately staged, because an open valley is an open roof. Working practice on a Malaysian roof is to open only as much of the run as can be closed again the same day, and to keep a covering ready for the rest. On a short valley over a single-storey extension that may well be one working day; on a long valley across a double-storey main roof it is usually several, with each day ending weather-tight.
The practical consequence for you is that the programme is weather-led rather than calendar-led, and a contractor who promises a fixed run of days through the monsoon is over-promising. Expect morning starts, expect a day to be stood down when a storm is forecast, and expect the tiles set aside for re-use to be stacked somewhere safe rather than thrown down. Ask at the quote stage how the roof will be left overnight — the answer tells you a great deal about how the job will be run.
The most common surprise on a valley job is what is under the tray. A valley that has been leaking for years has been wetting the boards and batten ends beneath it for years, and in Malaysian conditions wet timber does not stay sound: it softens, it grows fungus, and it is exactly the sort of damp softwood that termites find. So the honest way to quote a valley is with a provisional allowance for timber repair, and an agreed rate for anything found beyond it, rather than a flat figure that will be revised on the day the tiles come off.
Two other things get found at the same time. Battens that were run right into the channel, damming water behind them — they should stop short. And underlay that has gone brittle, torn or was never dressed into the valley at all, which is a separate conversation about the age of the whole roof rather than about this valley; that is covered in sarking and underlay failure. If the underlay is failing across the whole roof, replacing one valley is the right repair for one valley and does not solve the roof.

Profile matters as much as material. A tray with a raised centre rib helps stop water crossing from one face to the other in a heavy flow, and an upstand or welted edge on each side stops water running off the tray sideways and under the tiles. A flat sheet of metal folded once is a valley in the loosest sense; it is also cheap, and it is what you get when nobody specified the profile. Ask what profile is being supplied, not just what metal.
Half of a valley job is tiling, not metalwork. The tiles on both faces are cut at an angle so they finish clear of the waterway; cut too long, they narrow the channel and dam debris, and the brand-new valley overflows exactly like the old one. Cut too short, the tray is over-exposed and water can drive under the tile tails. The cut tiles are then bedded and pointed so the edge is closed against wind-driven rain, and the tails have to be supported, because a cut tile has lost the nib or the batten bearing that held the full tile down.
Profile matching is the other constraint. Older tile profiles go out of production, so a good contractor re-uses the tiles taken off, keeps salvage stock, or harvests matching tiles from a hidden roof face rather than forcing a near-fit tile that never seats. Breakage during stripping is normal and should be allowed for in the quote rather than argued about afterwards — ask how many replacement tiles are included and what happens if more are needed.
A valley concentrates the runoff of two roof faces and then hands all of it to one point of a gutter. That point does more work than any other part of the gutter run, and it is where overflow shows up first — water sheeting over the front edge in a downpour, or backing up under the eaves tiles. So a valley job that stops at the last tile is only half a job: the gutter it feeds needs clearing at the same time, the outlet and downpipe need to be proved clear, and if the gutter has been overflowing at that point for years the bracket line and the fascia behind it deserve a look too.

Valley work is quoted as a roof repair job rather than per square foot, because the number is driven by the length of the valley, the access, the tile profile and what is found under the tray (market estimate 2026, indicative Klang Valley):

Read the second row as a boundary marker. A single failed valley is a repair; if someone responds to it by quoting a whole-roof system, ask them to justify why. Valleys sit in the middle of a roof, not at its edge, which makes access harder than for gutter work. Reaching one usually means getting onto the roof properly rather than working off a ladder, and on a double-storey house or a steep pitch that means a scaffold or a roof-safe access system. That cost is real, it is often a meaningful share of a short valley job, and it belongs on the quote as its own line rather than as a surprise. Two valleys done in one visit share that cost; two visits do not.
Weather governs everything else. Nobody should be on wet tiles, work is staged so each day ends weather-tight, and nothing is opened in front of an afternoon storm. In practice that means valley work is best planned into a drier stretch and, if you already know a valley is marginal, done before the wet season rather than during it — the point of the monsoon roof preparation checklist.
Ask for a flood test: water run into the head of the valley for long enough to fill the channel and load every lap, with someone in the roof space below watching with a torch, and a second check that the water is actually leaving through the gutter outlet rather than backing up. It takes minutes and it is the difference between a valley that has been tested and a valley that has been finished.
After that, a valley is a maintenance item, not a fit-and-forget one. Clear it before the wet season every year, and twice a year if there are trees over the roof — leaf litter is what starts the corrosion cycle in the first place. While you are up there, look for a tide line above the channel edge (the sign that it has been overflowing), for mortar breaking away along the cut tiles, and for rust blooms at the laps.
