Stains along the line of the roof ridge, or mortar in the gutter? Here is why ridge capping cracks and how it is repaired properly.

Cracked ridge capping is one of the most common leak points on a tiled Malaysian roof: the mortar that beds the ridge and hip caps turns brittle, cracks and falls away, and wind-driven rain gets in under the caps. Small cracks are fixed by re-pointing the joints with a flexible pointing compound; where the bedding has failed, the caps are lifted and re-bedded. ClickBina's roof tile leak guide puts ridge and hip cap repointing at RM800 – RM2,000 (indicative 2026, Klang Valley).
On a pitched tiled roof, the ridge is the top line where the two roof faces meet, and the hips are the sloping lines where faces meet on a hipped roof. Ordinary tiles cannot close these joints, so a row of curved ridge or hip caps sits over them. On most Malaysian clay and concrete tile roofs, those caps are bedded in cement mortar, and the exposed mortar joints between and under the caps are pointed so that the line looks neat and sheds water.
That mortar is doing two jobs at once: holding the caps down in the wind, and sealing the gap under them. ClickBina's roof tile leak repair guide describes it as the brittle partner in a roof that moves with heat and wind, which is why the ridge line is one of the first places a tiled roof starts to fail.
A roof in the Klang Valley heats up hard in the afternoon sun and cools quickly in an evening storm. The tiles, the timber or steel underneath and the mortar all move by different amounts, and a rigid mortar joint cannot follow. Hairline cracks appear along the bedding, water gets into them, and over the years sections of pointing loosen and drop onto the roof or into the gutter.

The ridge rarely announces itself directly. These are the usual clues, most of which you can check from the ground or from inside the roof space:
| What you notice | What it suggests | Usual fix |
|---|---|---|
| Ceiling stains along the line of the ridge | Water entering under the ridge caps | Re-point or re-bed the ridge |
| Leak only in storms with strong wind | Wind-driven rain past cracked pointing | Re-point; check tile laps too |
| Pieces of mortar on the roof or in the gutter | Pointing breaking away | Re-point before caps loosen |
| Gaps visible under the caps from the ground | Bedding has failed | Lift and re-bed the caps |
| A cap that rocks, has slipped or is missing | Bedding no longer holding | Re-bed or replace the cap |
| A wavy, sagging ridge line | Structure below has moved | Check the timber before re-bedding |
Storm-only leaks are easy to misread. ClickBina's guide to wind-driven rain under roof tiles explains why a roof can stay dry in normal rain and leak only when wind pushes water sideways under the caps and laps.
Clay and concrete tiles crack under a foot planted in the wrong place, and the ridge is the worst place to walk. The roof tile leak guide's advice to owners is to stay off the roof entirely: most of what matters can be seen from the ground with binoculars, from a ladder at the eaves, or from the roof space.
If a leak appeared soon after someone was on the roof for other work, walking damage should be the first suspect.
Re-pointing is the lighter repair. The loose and cracked pointing is raked out, the joints are cleaned, and new pointing is applied along the caps. The roof tile leak guide describes the repair as repointing with a flexible pointing compound; unlike plain mortar, a flexible compound can move with the roof instead of cracking again at the next heat cycle.
Re-pointing makes sense when the caps are still firmly bedded and only the outer joints are cracked. It is quicker, disturbs fewer tiles and costs less. It will not fix caps that already rock or have lifted, because the problem there is the bedding underneath, not the surface.
Where the old mortar has failed wholesale, the caps are lifted, the old bedding is cleaned off, and each cap is set back down on fresh bedding and then pointed. ClickBina's roof repair cost guide describes this as re-bedding loose ridge tiles and re-mortaring, and its worked example strips and re-beds the ridge with a polymer-modified mortar.
Re-bedding is also the moment to deal with anything the old mortar was hiding: broken caps, a damaged tile course under the ridge, torn underlayment at the top of the roof, or a ridge line that has sagged. Caps that are cracked through are replaced; matching an old profile can be the hard part, so a contractor may salvage matching caps from a less visible part of the roof.
Metal deck roofs have a different ridge: a folded metal ridge cap screwed over the top of the sheets, usually with a filler or sealant along the joint. ClickBina's metal roof leak repair guide lists lap joint, ridge and flashing resealing as one of the common repairs, where water tracks through the laps or under the ridge cap. If the metal capping itself has rusted or been damaged, the roof repair cost guide prices stripping the old capping and installing a new galvanised or colour-coated ridge.
These are ClickBina's published ranges (indicative 2026, Klang Valley). Ridge work is priced by the length of ridge and hip, the access and the condition of the caps.

A ridge repair is a good investment when the rest of the roof is sound. It stops being one when the ridge is just one symptom of a roof that has aged out everywhere: brittle underlayment, rusted valleys and a new leak in a different place every monsoon. The roof tile leak guide's threshold is simple: if you are calling a roofer more than once a year, or the repairs are adding up towards a meaningful share of re-roofing, stop patching and compare a re-lay or a new roof. ClickBina's roof tile types guide explains how clay and concrete tiles differ when you get to that decision.
